It seems that Hille and Laycock are unable to ruck in tandem at our club. Both require being first ruck to get into games. There have been games this year where Hille has been fantastic and games where Laycock has been very good, but never a game where both have been. The one not designated the number 1 ruckman for the day struggles to get into the game.

Laycock is younger, better with taps, a better mark, and has much more upside (still yet to complete a full pre-season) so it seems he is safe as he has shown signs this year.

Now I’m not saying it will happen, but it is within the scope of possibility. On the open market what trade value do you think big David has? I think clubs like St Kilda and Carlton may pay over the odds for someone like Hille as they are in dire straights in the rucking department at the moment.

Remember Sydney payed pick 14 (IIRC) for Darren Jolley at the end of 2004 and I think it is safe to say Hille is a better player, with a larger profile than Jolley was/had back then.

If we don't land a Charman or Jolley and decide that Lade is too old we would consider Hille. Don't think we'd pay over the odds though - our ruck dept may be crap now but we do have a couple of beauties coming through - not even considering the 'big V' Kreuzer.;)

I would be willing to give up someone like nathan brown (pick 10 in last years draft). Or egan and lonie together perhaps. But you prob wouldnt take that. But i reckon i would give you a first rounder for him. im about to get a firing from all pies fans.

Yep, you are. We would be absolutely crazy to give up a first-rounder for Hille. IMO he's worth, at most, a second-rounder. He's not much more than an OK ruckman.

Yeh, I'd definately take Brown for him.

When it comes to trading, any player in their sides best 22 that's under contract and doesn't have a pressing desire to leave will cost a fair bit.

There's is not a chance that Essendon would expcet a second round pick for David Hille. David Hille has made it as an AFL footballer, a second round pick is a massive risk in that regard and even more so in this draft due to the lack of depth. You don't give up a sure thing for a rough chance even if the sure thing is only average.

For David Hille to leave, a first round draft pick would be just about the minimum I'd expect Essendon to accept for him.

Anyone would - That would be a ******ed trade.

He's yet another Collingwood fan who has absolutely no idea about Nathan J. Brown.

We're not trading him.

Correct me if I am wrong, but wouldn't N.Brown have easily figured in the top 2 or 3 in this years draft. IIRC was the best defender in last years U18 Championships. Would be a good aquisition to any team. Given what his brother has done for the Eagles, I would think a Hille for N.Brown trade would be Fremantlesque.

that would have been Lachlen Hansen.

Maybe Essendon would be right to accept nothing less than a first-rounder. But from a Collingwood point of view, anything more than a second-rounder would be overpaying. End result: no deal because neither side's requirements are met.

Hille's not a dud, but I don't think he's good enough to justify clubs desperately pursuing him. Therefore, I doubt Essendon will get that much for him, meaning that he will stay.

And Essendon wouldn't be disappointed with that.

Essendon would be misguided if they were hell-bent on getting rid of Hille as he still easily warrants a best 22 place. Being a ruckman and the current shortage at many clubs, his trade value could well rise well above what he is worth and Essendon could do very well in a deal for him. It is that and that alone that cause his name to be brought up in trade talks.

Essendon would only get rid of Hille if a very good offer is made.

I think if anyone would pay a first rounder for Hille it would be the saints. You can argue they're still in the premiership window, Hille has proven he can ruck all day at AFL (albeit not at a fantastic level). It would then free up Koschtizke to go forward.

And I would hope we'd take that deal (#9 for Hille) if it got offered. Some reasonably decent mids will be available with that pick, or one of Rance/Collier.

If St Kilda were going to give up pick #9 for a ruckman, you'd think that they could probably pry Darren Jolly from Sydney.

You honestly think Sydney would trade the younger of their two top ruckmen?

The main reason I'd say Hille has currency is that anyone who's (curently) a better ruck than him is definitely a clubs #1 ruck. So the only clubs that would trade a guy like that are those with brilliant ruck kids coming through, or a team like Essendon with very hopeful ruck prospects coming through AND no real expectation of finals for the next few years.

Sydney's a premiership shot, I'd have thought they'd fight tooth and nail to retain Jolley.

You haven't heard the strong rumour going around lately that Jolly wants to return to Melbourne? Apparently Sydney are already looking at other replacement options.

It's all rumour at this stage, but that's where it's coming from.

New coach due at Windy Hill. Incoming coach may well prize Hille higher than Sheedy does so this thread may become academic only.

Personally think that Essendon would not give him up.

Ah, hadn't heard that. Yes, that would change a lot. Of course, Seaby leaving might as well.

The question any incoming coach has to decide with Hille is:

How good/consistent will Laycock be?
How good/consistent will Ryder be, and is his best position ruck?
How good/consistent will Hille be if he's 2nd ruck?
Can Hille play anywhere else when he's not in the ruck? (in my view, no).
