I have never thought of him as a 'best 22 player' and always as a fringe player.

But last night I thought he was in our best 10 or so players and he impressed alot. What are your thoughts on him and his future at the GFC?

Like I said I have never really rated him that highly, but after last night I think I am changing my mind.

Extremely important and underated.

I'd have him in my starting 22 for sure. You need players like Johnson, Mooney & Rooke that you know will have a red-hot crack every time....

I totally agree. I even think that they haven't given him enough opportunities in the past three years. He is without a doubt in the best 18 down at g-long

A very underrated player, probably our best tagger. Very couragoues and a good overhead mark for his size. Good kick for goal too i thinks.

However, with the emergence of Rooke as a key tagger, his opportunities will be limited particularly if our younger pacey midfielders start playing well.

In the 2004 preliminary final he was like a condom, had the d*ck covered

Haha top call! :thumbsu: No coincidence in the fact that Aker's best game against us in the last 3 years, when he kicked 5 including two out of his butt, was when DJ wasn't playing.

IMO DJ's the 2nd best run with player at the club behind Rooke, and easily our best small defender, and as such is a vital part of our best 22.

Wowsers you guys really rate DJ. Personally, I've always felt he empitomises everything about Geelong that is insufficient to win a premiership. In other words, he is a solid, even player who lacks class.

agree budy, id prefer callen to play atleast hes got some leg.
bomber was trying everyone at FB....and no one was up to scratch...its scarlets position and if scarlet wants to roam around the backline well im sorry....hes the best FB in the comp and thats what he should be played at...sorry im still upset about the loss and i thought scarlet was playing bellow his usual self...as was ling:mad:

The trouble is not so much that we have solid, even players who lack class. It's that we've just got too many of them. You need to build your team on a foundation of hard-working and competent guys like David Johnson, but you also need six or seven players with a spark of brilliance who can get things going.

That's what we've been lacking. Gary Ablett and to a lesser extent Bartel, Mooney and Chappy have been pretty much it. Byrnes and Tenace haven't really come on as we'd have liked, Steve Johnson's got issues we all know about, which is why I'm so happy with what I've seen from Selwood and Djerkurra.

Unfortunately I can recall last year's debacle against Collingwood. DJ totally outpointed against Leon Davis and looking around for someone else to blame. I've had my reservations since as that's not the only game. he's a good honest battler and popular around the club. There'll be good games from him, and I thought he was pretty good on Friday night but I wouldn't be depending on him. FWIW for a late draft pick that was rejected from another club's rookie list, he's done well.

I don't think he is over rated at all. He is okay against average teams on average forwards, and yes, he does have a knack with Aker, as displayed in the 2004 semi-final, but otherwise I agree with my Dad. Bommer's lovechild.

he nearly got towelled by mcgrath and was lucky that a few decisions and bounces went his way. i think he is a fringe player at best.

David Johnson is as tough as nails and never afraid to put his body on the line. He took a number of courageous marks in 2006 and set up the occasional play which often resulted in a goal. He is a solid defender and although not a star, he is an essential part of our backline as small defenders are scarce on our list. He has also shown a good goal kicking ability with his 5 goals, 1 behind in 2006 which was a great effort considering he is a back pocket player. Will play all games if fit this year.:thumbsu:

Big heart, courageous etc etc, but can be cut up by good forwards.
EVERYONE can be cut up by good forwards. Name me a player in the Geelong defence apart from Scarlett who hasn't been pissed all over by an opposition player at some point. I think DJ did well for himself and (as much as I hate to say it) is ahead of Callan as the No 2 small defender behind Hunt.

Hunt and Johnson regularly get cut up. I remember a period when Farmer and Didak got him in consecutive weeks.

He is an honest battler who gives his all, but in defence he can be cut up.

He is honest.

Definitely could get a better back pocket, though.

Also plays for freekicks too much.

Please give examples of when Josh has been cut up.
Your hatred for him is pathetic.

A good small defender is the area we have sadly lacked in since the demise of Sando.

IMO DJ is not up to AFL standard, an honest courageous trier, but lack's football smarts. While he is good overhead and sometimes get's a bit of the pill, has been carved up many times by the Didak's, Farmer's, Shannon Grant's etc.

He has done a servicable job on occassion's but we need a real quality small to stand up, unfortunatley Callan hasn't done this to date. Josh play's a different type of role.
