Gosh, sounds like he’s already made his mind up. Has rejected a contract offer and has decided to suspend negotiations until years end. :(

Sounds like he’s as good as gone. :( I don't believe this.
Unless that's sarcasm, calm down Drum.

Might be holding out for a better contract, confidant he can produce even better football in the second half of the year
Might split up with his girlfriend. He's a teenager, and it's long range, after all.
Might grow to love Adelaide. (it COULD happen... maybe )
Might just have a tosser of an agent.

There was a bit of talk about Griffin wanting out last year, but we've heard nothing but good reports since, and his form would suggest he's happy.

jeez didnt this post decay quickly.

McKay went from great young player, to having a Victorian GF, to now its chicken little time and the sky is falling and he definately wants out.

Managers do the contracts. savvy managers who can see that if McKay signs now, he`ll get an average deal as an inexperienced kid whos played 7 games. but if he holds out, plays well in 22 games, his value to the club is not only vastly higher if he becomes the player hes threatening to become, but he has more leverage to use on the club as he becomes 'out of contract'.

I`d be surprised if Tippetts manager doesnt align him coming out of contract with when the GC starts up too, for the same reason.

McLeod did it too in the 90`s too remember? Refused to talk about contracts, was talk about Brisbane, next thing he`s signed up on big bucks and everyones happy.

How would that help us exactly?

So you would reward his lack of loyalty with AFL gametime - While other Crows youngsters ( who will be part of our future ) bust their butt in the SANFL.

I see your point if this was a one off but we do have history in this area.

This actually becoming that bad it is quite comical - playing the "which non-SA born youngster will return home this year" board game. Here's my tip for the next 3 years:

2008 McKay
2009 Maric
2010 Tippett.

Reidy should be able to wangle some nice 3rd picks with that lot.

He hasnt declared a lack of loyalty yet, i wouldnt jump the gun.

Playing in a successful team is the best way for a player to build a camaraderie with his teammates. Its entirely possible that at the end of the year he'll reflect and find he likes it here.

If not... we're best served by having his value as high as possible. You shouldnt assume walking in the PSD will be the easy option, its entirely possible that Freo and West Coast will be sitting at the bottom with the first picks... if it were to come to a situation where he wanted back to victoria in that scenario, its by trade only... considering the form hes shown, we could get a very juicy deal there.

Yeah, if he wants out we have to build his value. Let me make something perfectly clear: this kid will be elite. ELITE. Assuming judgment of Dangerfield is reserved until next year, Mackay is the most sublime young talent on this list (Tippett a very close second) and will be an outstanding player wherever he goes. It would be highway robbery long term if we didn't get real quality in return for him.

But even then....would REALLY hate to lose this kid. D:

I used to think the same but losing Watts, Stenglein, Johnson, Hudson and Meesen changed my mind. Not even Freo suffer from the go home factor like we do. Port have only lost one required player in 5 years, in the same period, we will have lost 5, including Mckay.

Watts- w***er. Didnt lsoe much in hindsight. Pick 17 for him could have worked out, if we didnt draft a guy with behaviour issues.
Stenglein- Traded, got a damn good deal. We won here.
Johnson- Again, got a damn good deal.
Hudson- Some feel the deal could have been better, but im happy with Jacky + Cook.
Meesen- Getting anything for this spud was a good deal.

All of those have been trades. When was the last time a promising young player just out and walked on us?

Some of the people that post here are unbelievable. Don't get hysterical about things you have no idea about.
I've been amazed that there has actually been a lot of positive comment on this board for a whole two days. That is how it should be all the time.
I thought I was on the wrong board!

What 19yo wouldn't want to be playing AFL...with whoevever would have him, for as long as they want him?
Also, why do these kids have managers? Surely it is to deal with a lot of issues (e.g. contracts) that the kids have no idea about. Of course the managers aim is to do the best deal for their client (and hence themselves) whilst the club is bound to try and do the best (cheapest) deal for the club.

Let's all be positive and enjoy all the good things that are happening at the moment in the club.

This has just killed my night.

However im of the opinion that hes just a smart cookie who is after a better deal. If not, then we keep playing him to show everyone else just how good he really is and hopefully a lot of clubs sit up and take notice.

It's not the best news, but who knows, his opinion might change.

The only way to make it change is to make him feel of value to the team though, and make him feel like he belongs.

So making him play for South isn't the answer.

Regardless of how good/bad they are now, all 5 were REQUIRED players at the time and all 5 returned home. Very disappointing. No other club suffers from the go home factor like we do, not even Freo.

if i were in his position there is no way in hell i would sign a contract right now unless it was really big

at the end of the season he will be offered a better contract than he is being offered now if he keeps improving as i cant imagine it being any worse than what he was offered now

and if after that he wants to go i am sure we could get a good trade for him he should be worth more than hudson or meese easily by years end
it will all be good guys :thumbsu:

Wow, this could be the earliest panic about this ever.

Guys, there'll be plenty of time to cry about this in October on the off chance it even gets that far.

In the mean time, lets concentrate on being 5 - 2

Brent Reilly board

He was close to leaving after two years before a heart to heart with Simon Goodwin he decided to stay. Now he has stated he never wants to leave.

I suggest the club will have Radar in his ear non stop

I have no doubt people this kid will resign....That is RE SIGN with us

Usually when I hear this stuff it sends me into a frenzied anxiety attack, but this doesnt concern me at all.... (this could be interpreted either way I guess;))

Look I hope you guys are right, but I hate hearing the words, "has suspended negotiations until the end of the year". It just makes the alarm bells ring. He's quickly becoming my favourite player and I would be absolutely shattered if he leaves. :(

As I see it there are two reasons why a player (and/or manager) might wish to put contract discussions on hold until the end of the year.

1. The player/manager considers it likely that the player will get a better offer at the end of the year to what they are getting now. Given that D-Mac has just come off his career best game this is not out of the question.

2. The player intends to depart at the end of the year, requesting a trade to a club in their home state. This does NOT automatically mean that the player is going to walk out on the club and into the PSD. Nine times out of ten the player is good enough to work with the club to ensure the club gets a decent trade (Stenglein & Johnson being classic examples). Given that he's a Victorian, reportedly with a GF back in Melbourne, this scenario is also possible.

I suggest we all take a cold shower and let the club sort it out. We'll find out in good time what the real story is - and there's really not a lot most of us can do to change anything anyway.

It has certainly made my heart flutter no doubt but im sure the club will sort it out one way or another.
