When you're sitting near the bottom of the ladder and a section of players are saying we don't like this or that and making judgements about the way they're coached maybe that's players you don't want to be working with.

Yeah I tend to agree with you. I don't generally know enough about professional team environments etc etc, but all this "the coach has lost the trust of the players" stuff gets me. I don't want to be the old man yelling at clouds.. but gee wizz. If I was Noble I wouldn't trust his players to go pick up some milk for him at the servo.. bloody hell. Maybe its true and they don't get his overcomplicated game plan, he best draw a diagram of how to walk to the servo and pin the money to their shirts.

Its hard to make sense of it all with the hyperbole and shit headlines that get the clicks.. but if the stuff about the supposed divide between the old and younger players regarding noble is true... I will side with the older players who have the experience of working together to try get the best out of their playing.

Or maybe the game has changed and the new brigade know and expect different. Then I guess Noble will be out.

Regardless of how Noble is performing.. the North Melbourne footy club (mainly the non-players and non-coaches) are performing pretty shit if I may say so. The fish rots from the head, and in this case I don't see Noble as that head, but more like a new fin attached to a dying fish there's my shit analogy done for the day.

At the time, I felt he was the right pick, but I personally have concerns over his player management, an inability to instill competitiveness, a real noticeable regression since last year and his capacity as a gameday tactician (jury is still out on this one). I personally want him gone as player trust problems are often untenable and we are simply too uncompetitive atm, but the issues are larger than him. I feel that the board simply hasn't ponied up the resources over the years (largely due to cost savings and poor appointments) for our support staff, our fitness staff and the VFL team. Our CEO in Ben Amarfio has also been largely mediocre. We made the right decision letting go Luff and co a few weeks back. They are the ones that decided last summer to have 3 genuine KPDs and 3 genuine KPFs heading into 2022 was a grand idea.

If you don’t mind a couple of questions.

With a league wide reduced off field cap, what type of cost savings are NM still employing and why?

Realistically, what AFL standard KPP’s were available to you?

I can think of one defender you could have looked at with your second pick at the draft, but he went at the end of the second round.

Were there any delisted players worth giving a second chance?

I find it hard to believe that Noble can't coach or isn't able to respond effectively to all the issues that crop up at a footy club.

He's a very experienced footy person who's already gone to 3 AFL clubs who were poor and had key roles in seeing them into successful clubs so all this stuff about him not connecting or being old school or whatever else I take with all the other drivel that gets wheeled out by the media and administrators at failing clubs who need a scapegoat to shift blame from their own failings. And from players who aren't good enough to make themselves better.

Maybe NM is just a basket case all round . Maybe they need a cleanout from top to bottom , including the playing list. Noble never struck me as a person who wasn't very open to ideas. Most of this stuff in the press is just the narrative they'll run with until they find another sucker.

The North poster above says Nobel is placing emphasis on versatility. Sounds like he is following the lions development playbook.

Our players were ready to follow a leader, and most respected the vision to build alternative positions. And it is paying off now. I believe that policy was why we lost Keays, among others.

I expect their recruitment policy will also follow ours - targeting trades for age groups over raw talent. We got lucky with age group with talent. I know it sounds basic, but lots of clubs get blinded by a player to the detriment of their list, and I think north are one of them.

The big difference is when noble and Fagan arrived a lot of the club deadwood had gone. North are still moving theirs on. For him to stay a lot of people will need to hold tight and trust, but it doesn't sound like there's a lot of faith. Horrible position for him, doubt he'll be given the time to see this wave through.

You and I obviously interpret what we’ve seen of Noble very differently.

I haven’t seen him in a coaching role before, and haven’t paid much attention to him at North.

But the impression I have of him, from his Adelaide and Brisbane roles, is a fair bit different to my impression of Fagan.

And my impressions come purely from watching and listening to Noble talk, not from anything that’s been written or said in the media.

I certainly have a view of Noble as not having the same relationship building skills as Fagan, and being a bit more of an “old school” type of coach.


As for all the issues that crop up at a footy club. Noble is the coach. It’s not his role to respond to all the issues that crop up at a footy club.


Again, I haven’t followed much of what’s gone on at North, but from the little I’ve heard, I believe there might be a fair bit of politicking and factional manoeuvring going on within the management side of the club.

Things aren’t right off the field, and things aren’t right on the field, and Noble is likely to be a casualty caught in the middle.

I think Nathan Buckley could be a good fit for North. I say that with no knowledge of North or Bucks, but from my limited knowledge of the game and look and feel, to me I think it could work. Buckley is respected, like Voss and would command respect from their players and as far as can tell was a pretty good coach. The only thing Buckley would probably struggle with is coming from a very wealthy and big club like the Pies to a smaller and less resourced club like North. My 2c.

I think he's seen as an arrogant smart arse who thinks he is better than everyone else & thats where he fell down in coaching. He was lucky to have unconditional support from Eddie otherwise he would have been given the shove many years before 2021.
In Nobe's defense, I don't think he understood the fire he was jumping into before he jumped. Coaching has always been on his bucket list and the thought of passing on this opportunity to coach Norf just couldn't be considered by him not knowing if he would be offered another coaching role at another club down the track.
He's a champion person and I am sure he is a good coach in the right club.....just not a basket case like Norf right now.....i wish he was still at Brisbane.

I think North Melbourne are just VERY VERY inexperienced on all aspects of the footy club (including the board room antics) and Noble will be the unfortunate scapegoat that’ll be the sacked at the end of the year as a sacrifice of the poor incompetence of him (in few regards) but mostly everyone around him.

In terms of list management/trading though, the club just really needs to prioritise bringing in experienced-like players (for starters) before worrying about needs/voids in their AFL team to help create a strong culture (on-field/off-field) and to provide internal competition for spots in their squad similar to how we attacked the trade period early on and they should be able to do that easily with the amount of salary cap they currently have at their disposal.

A couple of quality experienced OOC players from a list of Daniel McStay/Ryan Lester (Brisbane), Steele Sidebottom (Collingwood), Dyson Heppell (Essendon), Griffin Logue (Fremantle), Quinton Narkle (Geelong), Tim Taranto (GWS), Jack Gunston/Chad Wingard (Hawthorn), Andrew Bradshaw (Melbourne), Karl Amon/Steven Motlop (Port Adelaide), Shane Edwards/Kane Lambert (Richmond), Jarryd Geary (St.Kilda), Sam Reid (Sydney), Jack Redden (West Coast), Mitch Wallis (Western Bulldogs) would help North Melbourne massively next year and beyond in their rebuild and help provide numerous benefits to the club as mentioned before.

Agree with the concept but wouldn't the experienced guys brought in need to be also cultural change agents? Hodge (for example) did a lot to change our internal player culture for the better ... can't really say the same out Ablett at the suns. I would be keeping the likes of Heppel and Wingard (as two examples) away from a list I wanted to improve in more than a tactical/mechanical fashion.

Difference of opinion - obviously - I've come to quite like Buckley in recent years and why wouldn't anyone in AFL respect the man? Perhaps you know a lot more about him that I do to have such views. He's done more than many of us in the game and I don't mind him. Just throwing up a suggestion as he seems the type to embrace challenges but what would I no.

Are you just saying that because you want to see Buckley fail again? I have reconciled to Buckley deserting Brisbane at one of our lowest points. But then again I wouldn’t mind three years of him doing post match interviews explaining why NM lost again

I would assuming there's a spot. Bolton has an impressive coaching record as an assistant. Both at the Hawks and now Collingwood. Some just don't cut it as head coach.

I think they should stick with Noble for 2023 and I dare say it, 2024. Put a good 2IC with him who can help with match day tactics, they could put feelers out for Leon Cameron.
