Condolences to the family and friends. Far too young. I wasn't around to see him play, but watching the '83 video I remember him being called frequently.

It's amazing how many of you knew him personally.

Partly because he came from an era when footballers were just normal members of the community, not cut off from the real world and treated like rock stars like they are today.

Thinking back on his career and the man himself, he really does epitomise what I think of as a Hawthorn footballer; solid, dependable and a real team player. Blokes like Rubber helped build the club into what it is today.

Any one wanting to know what Rubber was about need only watch the opening minutes of the 83 Grand Final.

An Essendon player is about to clear the ball in the midfield when he is flattened in a crunching tackle that jarrs the ball free.
At that moment I knew we were "on"
The standard had been set
The player to deliver that crunching tackle - Hawthorn No. 8 - David O'Halloran.

Typified what we love best about our favourite Hawthorn players.
Fierce and unrelenting on the field - A thorough gentleman off it.

A sad day indeed

RIP Rubber

One of my fave memories of Rubber was sitting behind the fence on the wing at Princes Park back when it was our home ground and Rubber accidentally running into the boundary ump. I remember seeing the poor guy's eyes roll back in his head - he was knocked out cold. Very solid unit was Rubber. Great player.

He was a great defender. Not underrated by anyone

You certainly don't hear his name come up too often when the great defenders of the period come up unless you are among Hawthorn supporters.

I certainly put him up there. Wasn't as stylish as a Doull, Dench or Southby, but certainly had the complete range of defensive skills like they did - could play on a variety of different sized forwards and do the job, and could attack and defend equally well.

Had he not busted his knee early in his career, I'm prepared to say there's a good chance he'd be remembered in the company I just mentioned. He wasn't all that far away from them at times as it was anyway.

I remember clearly his photo in our Park Orchards clubrooms and thinking how great it was that someone from our neck of the woods played VFL. He was probably one of the reasons I chose to barrack for the Hawks.

Just passing by to lend my condolences to the Hawk community, following the death of David O'Halloran. He was a fine player who always displayed courage and fair play.:thumbsu:

A sorry day for all football followers.

I met David way back in 1983

He was working at the estate agency where I bought my house

That's back in the days when footballers had other jobs

I was shocked to hear of his passing

He played a great last quarter in the 1976 GF, taking several defensive marks as NM launched a comeback

I worked with David for about 12 years in property management and I am shocked, saddened and shattered - I can't believe it. I loved David's quirky personality and his amazing music trivia knowledge. He was an absolute gentleman. He will be sadly missed. I feel numb! My heart goes out to Karen, Tom and Georgie at this incredibly sad time. I feel priviledged to have known you David xxxxx

Fantastic photo from @ludbeyheraldsun of Clarko hugging O'Halloran's family after singing the song today.

Very sad news. Used to see him all the time around Vermont, even up until very recently he looked like he could've pulled the jumper on and played the next day. Was as strong as an ox, and as dependable as anybody.
RIP.
EDIT: Great pic. :thumbsu:
