Great player - a stalwart of the backline back in the day. Played his one and only game in 1985 in the Grand Final of all things... Jeansy's attempt at curbing the prodigious talent of Paul Salmon. Was an All Australian from memory and a dependable and dour defender in his day. Vale, Rubber.
 
Great man, Rubber.

He was a fantastic judge of a mark, often against taller players.

And he had sticky fingers - he used to "clunk" marks.

Yes, have memories of him like that - dependable, tough, straight-ahead off the backline.

..was never chosen in an All Australian team. However, was in the 1982 VFL Team of the Year.

I met the guy a few times, gave me some advice about playing AFL that now is very valuable to me.

Hawthorn mate used to point out O'Halloran's unusual facial expressions in playing photos. Often a distorted grin or grimace.

One of my heroes when I first got into the Hawks, a real Mr Dependable down back...

Was one of the most reliable players who could cover all types of opponents, tall or small. Would play on Malcolm Blight one week and then David McMahon the next. Gave 100% to every contest and hated losing a marking duel or having a free award against him but never argued a decision, he just stood the mark with fierce determination that it would not happen again. Great reader of the play with superb marking who you would have loved to have in the trenches next to you. From memory was considered the 1976 Recruit Of The Year (which is today's Rising Star Award). His knee injury which caused him to miss the 1978 GF was to trouble him for the rest of his days. After each Saturday it would blow up so much that he wouldn't be able to train on the Tuesday. A true Hawthorn champion. RIP
 
Sad news. Was a big fan when I started getting into footy as a young kid.

Might have to pull out the 83 grand final DVD and reminisce.

RIP to the O'Halloran family. Funny how i would probably appreciate him more now if he played than I did as a young kid. He wasn't a star, and didn't take the screamers, or kick the miraculous goals. If he was in the team now though, we'd wax about how dependable he was, and how he would shut down opposition forwards and be the one in the backline taking the telling marks.

I also recall what massive bloody legs he had too. Any wonder he could use his body so well to manouvre the opponents out of the way.
