It has a lot to do with it actually.

The players won't have 100 percent buy in if they can't connect with their coach. Without results to back them up, a coach specialising in cliches, catch phrases and rhetoric will always struggle to lead a footy club.

His catch phrases were annoying me towards the end too

We have performed abysmally the tail end of the past couple of seasons. I put it down to a very young list getting battered and bruised but perhaps Bolton’s messaging got very stale after a few rounds. I think he has laid a great foundation for the club and hope he is acknowledged if and when we achieve the ultimate success* but am very glad Teague is now at the helm. I hope he gets appointed as head coach.

Aside from the vibe I can’t see where there is tangible evidence of a brilliant job.

To me he did well to build a decent culture playing disciplined and solid footy in 2016/17, but was a deer in headlights as soon as things went wrong in 2018.

Even if you excuse last year as a write off, his first half of this year sealed his fate. We had a side which could compete, probably even more so than 2016/17, but seemed hellbent on trying to win with one hand tied behind his back.

No positional moves, and insistence that Ed Curnow in the prime of his career was now a defensive forward. Then Dow, Fisher, SPS and even Setterfield were preferred to Ed, Murph and even Walsh who is far more ready.

It was like he had the idea in February and was never going to change it. Was totally bizarre.

When you make positional moves, you find what players might be capable of. Kennedy looked like a total bust, but with some tinkering v Freo we have discovered a handy 3rd forward.

Watching our last 2 games especially I’ve noticed how much more organized and in control of things we looked than we did at any stage under bolts, where you felt things could fall apart at any moment.

The track we were on, players would of left, no experienced players would want to join and our existing experienced players would of retired early because they would of had a gutfull.

His legacy at best maybe seen as similar to Brendan McCartneys at the dogs.

well said.

Here's to Teague being our beverage.

I think that results are the key as you say- especially with young players. I dont buy the Bolts had lost the players rhetoric. But at the same time young players are only human, and if things were starting to go pear shape- after a very promising start to '19, then they were starting to doubt themselves.
Lets look at our previous coaches
Pagan: He could roll a cliche out with the best of them, but was clearly a successful coach at north
Ratten: wore his heart on his sleeve and ultimately failed
Mick: If ever there was a ying to Boltons yang it was Micks pressers. But ultimately he failed.

IMO the BB style was to keep everyone on message with simple repetitive stuff that could not be misinterpreted

He’s certainly not gifting games.

Getting contributions across the board, and the mix of young & old standing up...

You get guys like Murph torpedoing into a random ball against 3 GC defenders to set up a goal.....Jones going headfirst into marking contests, Levi smacking the pill 55.

These are big moments, and everyone has one in games now.

Best thing he did, in a very long season, is put his experienced players in their best position.

Extreme cringe on footy classified. In a way it’s a good thing this has come up now to get it out of the way. Chris Judd needs to choose between being a part of the club or the media.

Not Necessarily IMO its only an issue when there is heat on us from poor performance. Next year should see that dissappear.

There's plenty of examples of others in both roles, Judd will be fine. I don't think you can ask a board member to relinquish his paid work to carry out his voluntary work at a club.

It's a short term situation because Carlton are searching for a coach. Judd just needs to play a straight bat and give them nothing, e.g. That's a hypothetical. We'll cross that bridge if we come to it. etc, etc.

All players react differently depending who the coach is and the messaging. I won't say I would use Bolton's style, but it is a reach to suggest there wasn't buy in

Development of youth versus short term results is a difficult balance, for any coach given our list

Plenty, communication is a pretty big part of coaching...

But yes, his tactics were rubbish too :thumbsu:

Basing it on results right?

Did you have the same view in the first 2 years of his tenure when he had a more experienced but less talented side and won 7 & 6 games ?

Hoping Teague doesn't suffer a belting and or goes winless from here on, as i am sure many will start to highlight his flaws

Watching that clip I have to say this just makes it easier for CFC to appoint Teague whenever they choose and close all the conversation down.
No doubt in my mind that Juddy was loving it.
He allowed us to be painted into a new scenario with just slightly different words as the message.

There are quite a few clues around now to say whats likely to happen.

4 from 6 , the numbers don't lie. I agree with others in that there is no gain in making the appointment before the end of the season.

I'd debate this. I would also hope players as young as our keep improving. My take

Levi was playing well regardless. Bolton had moved him to defence
Kennedy struggling and moved to forward where he has been okay. Injured
Jack. Definitely but was building
Newman. Been mostly good all year
LOB. Bolton made him better. No doubt
Murphy. Released back to proper position. Great for wins but not long term
Ed. Same as Murphy
Setterfield. Been building
SPS. About the same IMO
Fisher. About the same
Gibbons. Building

It's also only 5 games

Big difference for me is players seem to have been released and have some freedom and best players are playing in best position.

While I agree with a lot of this, there are two things that stand out:

Putting murph and Curnow in the centre bounce should have been done a lot earlier. The balance was way way out and I don't think the losses were doing anyone favours. Did Bolton still think that wins and losses didn't matter this year?

Secondly, Teague has the aforementioned players firing all at once.. Not just here and there.

You make a valid point Brendon.
