I am very confident our club has made an outstanding here.

Our off-field footy department has never been stronger top to bottom. I believe David Teague when he says there is no other he would be at right now.

Season over, now Teague can really get stuck into putting his stamp on the club. I'm expecting the team which takes the field in Round 1 next season to look quite a bit different to the 22 who played today.

For too long we have been about how to limit the strengths of our opposition to keep us competitive. Teague needs to create a Carlton brand which requires the opposition to focus on how they limit our strengths & this has to happen within the next 6 months so we can go into Round 1 expecting a win, not hoping we can be competitive.

A true blue and outstanding start with even better things to come for Teaguey and his team to grow together In 2020 and beyond.
Can't believe how much I love this guy. And how good it feels to really like and admire your team's coach. Seeing the team so happy and willing to give it all makes me happy too.

He has challenged the players on many levels.
To be ready for preseason.
To do the basics right. At last.

20 years ago that should have happened but never once were deplorable basic skills challenged out in public.
The harshest punishment we got wasn't the fine or the draft limitations.
It was the creation of an excuse for mediocrity.

Teague was the speaker at a small Grand Final Week business breakfast this morning. A few notes:

Starting from his playing days...
- Seemed to think he was pensioned off earlier than warranted as Pagan wanted to play the kids
- Ended up being the best thing for his development as coach, being given his own team by Pagan
- Very selfish player culture at CFC when he was playing. Said Pagan at North had raised most players from u19, he could strongly challenge those players. when he came to CFC he tried the same and it was received very poorly. When Teague arrived the next year, Pagan had softened significantly, but the senior players were never on side.
- Lost a young child some years ago, which put football into perspective.
- Raved about Longmuir as coach, expects him to be Freo's next coach
- Asked how to reconcile internal and external expectations now he's senior coach (alluding to the hype / Teague Train), he said he's a pretty honest person and wouldn't expect to have very different messages to players and supporters / media
- Someone joked about 'training wheels' - Teague said Judd had also used that phrase just after Bolton was sacked, so it was a term that didn't surprise or disappoint him. No issue with Judd. Said it definitely helped his cause because 'training wheels' was poorly received by the fans, who took his side.
- Phil Walsh his most influential coach, and he's most similar to Walsh as "type of coach". But Worsfold highly influential more for the way he developed and managed the coaching system.
- Said getting this job was a couple of years ahead of his schedule, having 11 weeks as opposed to a few as caretaker the only way he could have scored a senior job at this stage of his coaching career (subtext - things fell into place for him).
- But said that 'promoting from within' makes sense, and is the way footy is going, and cited Hawthorn giving guys a go at Box Hill, then line coach, then moving on to another club as a good model.
- Keen to get Betts, straight bat as to what decision will be made (list balance, implicit respect towards SOS et al). But he strongly emphasised that Betts' would bring enormous leadership if he came, came off like that stuff was more important to Teague in wanting Betts than his playing contribution
- The one positive thing he said about Bolton was that his work building a good culture was excellent
- Said looking to trade for an inside/outside midfielder, not just small forwards.

Wish I'd asked a question or two, but as you'd expect, Teague was thoughtful and honest. Very impressive.

Should have come from the captains: Ratten and the Vet in 2003 Kouta 2004-2006. Great players but poor choices for captain IMO. IIRC Ratten lead a mini protest against the Pagan appointment by taking the players around to Brittains house the day after. Poor leadership and poor signal to the playing group.

This feeds into what I used to say regularly back then & over the years on here that for too long the 'tail wagged the dog' at Carlton.

Pagan coached North to 7 consecutive PFs, winning 2 premierships during that time. He didn't stop being a good coach overnight. Of course he inherited a very ordinary list when he came to Carlton, but this was where we needed our experienced players to lead the way. Instead the buy-in mostly seemed to come from those whose careers were potentially at the crossroads e.g. Fev, Teague, Scotland or our younger players e.g. Walker, Betts, Murphy.

It was no surprise that in the game which turned out to be Pagan's last as our coach, some senior/experienced players just went through the motions, resulting in us copping an absolute hiding from the Lions. Our leading possession winners that day were Scotland, Bentick, Carrazzo, Walker & Blackwell.

Anyway, this is ancient history & we now have some wonderful leaders at the club who are committed to bringing success back to the club & who fully support our coach.

Just got a letter from DT- addressed just to me!

It was interesting who he chose to specifically highlight out of the younger players to be most excited about

"A lot of our growth is going to come from those players who are coming out of their third and fourth years. The reality is Kade Simpson and Marc Murphy probably aren't going to get a lot better — we'll aim for it, but it'll definitely be the younger guys who we will look to drive us forward.

Guys like Charlie, Weiters, Samo, Cunners: I could name more. I think we saw a little bit of that this year and I'm really excited for that to continue. A good pre-season will allow them to perform at their best. "

Cunners was a bit surprising in a good way- given our emphasis on trading in small forwards -Papley, Martin, Betts,Butler. Clearly DT rates DC highly. I just checked DC's stats when playing under DT as coach- not awe inspiring though

DC is not a small forward, if he got continuous footy he would be HF/Mid. It’s usually match fitness and continuity that have stopped him showing his talent.

I rate him extremely highly and think he could be one of the most damaging players on our list

Just to clarify....do you mean specifically when DT was head coach, or including when DT was forward line coach?

Could not be more impressed by Teaguey's email. Honest and refreshing as always.
