How can coaching not be a major issue? Even if what you say about the list is true it still circles back to coaching and the way the players are managed.
Sorry what I meant to say was that it was not the biggest issue in my opinion. As in I feel the major issues will still be there if the coach changed.

Would you suggest sacking the list?

Bolton teams were young and not ready for the most part. Mick tried to implement a Pies game plan.

The confusion and the propensity to give up from this current side is frightening to me.

common denominator is the senior cohort Bolton was trying to phase out

Murphy has been there for 5 coaches, Curnow 4, Casboult 4, Jones 3, Cripps 3, Docherty 3, everybody else 2 or less.

I won't count Betts because he left because of one coach, missed the next and then returned under Teague.

I'd previously have drawn the line at players who were there when Ratts was sacked, but some of what Cripps has shown in the last two years is seriously concerning

i get that the players have to take ownership. But our setup behind the ball today was awful and has been all year for the most part. Thats a coaching issue. Also clearly the players are playing as individuals rather than team. It is the coaches job to bring the players together and that's just not happening right now

When Bolton left I felt the same - we'd built this "great young list" and I was really concerned they would leave.

Now, I couldn't give a sh*t.

If we bring in a coach that understands the minimum standards required for prolonged success in AFL and has the respect and authority to implement them unwaveringly, and we have players that, as a result, want to leave, then there's the ******* door.

Obviously we play it right and try to get a good deal for them. But any time we trade out a player that either can't, or won't, put in the required defensive effort/intensity each and every week, we're a step closer to getting out of this mess.

It might take a while, it might mean again taking a step back in order to take two steps forward, but it just needs to happen.

Yep, a lot of these realities are dawning on us all at once and although it’s not nice to consider, there’s no alternative but to start thinking about which players want to contribute and which are happy to coast.

We have also been devoid of quality players for so long, we put them on a pedestal.

I’m already looking at the long-term contract we’ve given Cripps, and start to wonder if we’d made the right choice. Invariably he has been a star player at the club, captained the squad and been a good representative in a bleak period, but his form over the park past two years has been poor in contrast to his stellar 2019, and really all years prior.

I think he’s one who has needed a surprising amount of coaching and mentoring over the past couple of years, but due to a serious lack of standards or thought into his game he has mellowed as a player. At times he has needed someone to get him in check, get him chasing, get him doing the things he was renowned for in his first couple of years - tackling, blocking for his teammates, working around the periphery so we can get a clean exit out of a stoppage.

Since winning the players award he’s seemingly developed a complex where he’s now immune to doing the little things that made him such an effective player and actually ended up building him in kind as he’d inevitably win free kicks for tackles, or be involved in a follow up because he’d blocked for a teammate at a stoppage. Even win he plays well I feel he’s got another 20-30% to give, but he only plays the games on his terms and won’t play the percentages if it doesn’t suit him.

Those kind of actions have a trickle down effect, and it shouldn’t come as any surprise why guys like Martin, McGovern and Setterfield only put in when they need to.

I don’t think we need a Mick Malthouse style list blow up; history has shown it doesn’t work, but we do need to stop putting stock in players who don’t have uncompromising standards and I think it’s reasonable to start looking to get some of these hideous contracts off our books. Every player gets a clean slate, but a good coach isn’t going to take too long to figure out which players they don’t want to invest into.

Clarkson has the best resume of them all, may be available at some stage too, will our administration have the foresight and determination to do what’s best for our beleaguered club? Let’s see how the remaining games unfold and digest the review’s recommendation, I hope it’s not a futile exercise or well flounder for another decade.

Yep and we have done it for years, Williamson , jumper punched someone in his first game and we though gun player enforcer etc. I have gone off SPS Soft approach to the game in the last 2 years and made it known. Yet we gave him more games etc. you may argue we played him in the wrong position. Playing him on ball will not make him attack the ball or man harder.

It just means more 10-15m dinky kicks and opposition mids, playing through him.

Walsh needs to be captain next year. The other 2 step down, if they don’t like it, let’s do a trade.

And then go 6 years. He is laughing all the way to the bank. I’m very angry with that contract. 4 at most or we do a trade. We are seriously d heads. We have the IQ of ants, the Gov smiles as well and says hello.

Williamson is a worse player than when he first came into the team.

It’s amazing how quickly we go through the same cycle of 1) getting promoted 2) showing a lot of potential 3) plateauing 4) whipping boy status

It’s absurd.

Couldn't have put it better myself. I hate how our recruits never really beef up and put some muscle on. Ed mentioned it himself once he got to Box hill he was told to keep his aerobic capacity up and was put on a protein diet and given 2 years to muscle up. We have never encouraged this. To frail to compete.

Why are so many people upset about a 6-yr deal? Weren't the reports that the deal was extended so the money would be more spread out, benefiting our player retention ability as well as our ability to bring in others
What his body has been through, i hope so, but there is no way known he will last out 6 years unless he learnt another craft. at the moment he is a one trick pony which the opposition has worked him out. I hope we get 4 years of 2019 from out of him.

He hasn't been at the standard he set in 2017-2019 but I do feel like he is treated harshly. He has been injured all year - got criticised by many today despite him having 21 and 3 goals today as well as a bunch of clearances and marks (and he wasn't even playing his natural position). No reason why he can't get back to his best

Barker’s comments don’t leave much room for debate.
I’d say the die is cast.
So where to from here ?
Can’t imagine the club would go for an untried coach 3 times in a row.
Clarkson has painted Kennett into a corner.
I reckon that rules Clarkson out but you never know with Kennett.
Lyon feels like someone this CFC just won’t entertain.
Scott feels like Collingwood.
Buckley feels like the media.
Voss, possibly, but haven’t we had this dance before and passed ?
Pyke, reportedly doing well with Sydney and has taken a team to a GF.
The camp hurt him but other than that seems pretty solid ?
Who knows, but it appears to be game on now …

If Clarkson is out which based on his recent interview he is. You don’t talk that passionately and aggressively if there’s a chance you are leaving. He was very firm and linked his contract at hawthorn to his marriage and that they are for life (term of the contract).

if he’s out then who?
Ross Lyon?
Brad Scott?
Untried?

My pick is Brad Scott but if not I’d go Yze, Caracella or Jamie Graham.

Its a shame Longmuir got the freo job, I’ve always rated him very highly

And yet his win percentage is the same as Teagues. The grass is always greener.

Won 3 out of our last 4 tighetning up the defensive stuff. Lose our 1 forward option and what do we decide to do?

Give up our big strength of late and try and create a turnover game shootout.

Idiotic coaching and papers stamped for me. If we lost that game 56-35 I wouldn't be too disappointed because we were decimated by forward options. But at least our coaches gave us the best chance to win that game. The only way we were beating North with that lineup was keeping them to under 10 goals.

The only reason we were in the game in the first half was due to their turnovers not exposing our tactical setup.

Honestly I have officially heard it all with Teague.

In his presser after the game he admitted Murphy wasn't fit enough to play a full game so was made sub. The fact he doesn't appreciate how truly pathetic that is and identify that as something you probably shouldn't make public is disgusting.

What if we lost a player to injury in the first 5 minutes? We would have played a man down because Murphy MUST play 300 games.

Teague is so far out of his depth it's actually negligent to allow him to continue.

Teague and the faceless muppets that seem to never be accountable that appointed him need to go. The club is an absolute rabble.

That has literally been Carlton's slogan for the last 15 years. Time to back a coach in and give him proper support.

Agreed - I think there is more to coaching than on field performances
- team morale
- list management
- player development
- gamestyle
- support

Carlton being a revolving door of coaches is like robbing peter to pay paul. We will just be back to square one again.
Besides I don't think the club can afford taking $1m+ off the soft cap to appoint others. Needs a fair run at it with a healthy list and better players.

Freo have way less talent than we have and started their rebuild a few year later. If there win percentage is same as us it shows they are over performing compared to us.
Longmuir has given them a clear game plan and set the standards required.
great potential as coach
