Also what’s Brad Scott doing?

Squeezed everything out of a fairly average north list for years. Really got them to over achieve for the list that they had.

could do much much worse than get him in as the senior assistant
He's interesting, basically has been confirmed since that he was never allowed to bottom out and gather talent for fear of the club collapsing financially, he was forced to coach a team to sit around finals with constant awkward top ups.

I really like what he did there.

If/when Buckley is sacked we should seriously consider him as a senior assistant.

was an assistant during Pies flag.

Took over as head coach, through a mini rebuild and was a dom sheed kick away from taking his side to a flag.

Besides his club absolutely cooking their list management and salary cap he has always seemed to get the best from his players.

There has been one player that categorically has flourished since recruitment over the last 3 years and that’s Walsh. That’s not indicative of the coaching he has received at the Club a testament to the player he is. It’s effing frustrating that so many players have regressed - Dow, LOB, Williamson, SPS. It’s as if they exhibit their talent in the first year and then the Club sucks it out and we are left with their shells. FMD it’s getting frustrating.

The way I see it, this year is a write off already so no point changing now.

Get Clarko in as a coaching director end of season. This sh*t continues say 6 games into next season, the axe can fall then and we've got an experienced coach right there to step in.

We have no discernible forward or defensive structure at present. We get dozens of repeat entries for naught and the oppo just waltz it down the other end for easy goals after we waste energy for little result.

While we're a mid or two short, we've got the Coleman leader, AA fullback and Walsh and Cripps in the middle and a rejuvenated Eddie Betts.

This is 100 percent a game plan and coaching issue at present. Our zones are terrible - compare what we do with the Demons rolling zone for example.

My faith in Teague is wavering fast.

This x💯

Another issue we have is attracting good assistant coaches is that the younger ones want to work under an experienced well credentialed coach who can show them the way... No one is coming to Carlton to work under Teague for that reason.. so we will be forced to pay top dollar to attract more experienced or be forced into taking ones that are just happy to have a job.

This is so spot on and something I’ve mentioned before. No one is being attracted to carlton. They can’t learn anything from Teague

It’s 100% game plan.
Look at Essendon and how much they have improved with a good structure.
They have brought in quality assistants in Giansiracusa and Caracella to assist Rutter and look at the improvement.
We have a shocking game plan

Saad hated that Rutten wanted him to defend first attack second; so he forced a trade. Looks like they were right

It’s a bit of a dead cat bounce for Essendon as well.

Rutten finally has complete control and is instilling a method and style that holds up, but really their list is more mature than you’d think. They took a lot of players in between 2013-2016 via the draft and a lot of those guys have improved considerably over the past couple of years. Langford, Laverde, Parish, Rodman, Ridley, Draper, McGrath etc. Probably another reason why we shouldn’t write off Dow or LOB or Setterfield. Sometimes even high draft picks need years to adjust and find their niche.

They also have nothing to lose this year. Most projected them to finish bottom 4, but the core of their side is in the right age range and playing with a bit of freedom that comes with no expectations. Think of our first half of 2016 - young players running out just happy to get a kick, unearthing young stars (Cripps, Docherty), a few steadying older players. Reckon their list is more readymade and talented, but you get the gist.

Plus Essendon have always played a bit better with a chip on their shoulder, and the us against them mentality has always driven them. Hence the supplements program, then the subsequent club wide solidarity, rising into finals after winning the spoon, now they’ve lost Daniher and Saad (and possibly went close to losing Merrett) there’s a clean slate again and their key stakeholders aren’t the usual suspects.

re: Saad. Reckon it’s pretty healthy and normal to disagree with how he was used. He’s an attacking weapon who needs to be used up the field to be at his best. Like most he probably also thought Essendon were set for a stint down the bottom and made the calculated move to a team who could pay him better and looked on the outside to be making a leap up the ladder. From all angles it was a smart career move.

No reason we wouldn’t also push up the ladder with some considered changes in the coaching box, and Teague might also have to make way if he can’t break even in the second half of the year.

He only flourished because he is a freak and not because of development from any of our coaches

Exactly same with Weitering. They are just freaks of nature and would still succeed no matter the environment.
We are also lucky Harry and Charlie have as well.
Everyone else we need a review

Nobody would know unless they are a coach or trainer or medical staffer. Someone that works in the football department in other words.
So much stuff that gets written here that has no basis in fact at all.
The only basis is the fact we didnt win on the weeks when this thread gets attention.

We can't see the big bang but we know it happened right, you know that we, as a species, can derive information from clues and patterns. It's one of our traits.

we didn’t win on the weekend .. the same way we haven’t won on 6x other occasions this year ... total dominance not reflected on the scoreboard... then in 15 mins the opposition slams on 5+ unanswered goals

it was not a once off !!

A once off every week.

This is a therapeutic post to remind/convince myself it isn't all doom and gloom 😂

Fish can 100% make it as a mid. He is dynamic and has excellent skills. Even better if he can split his time forward and be dangerous when there. I don't see it as a bad thing that he stated to the coach he wants to be a mid, he is backing himself to be good enough, great!

I firmly believe we have all the ingredients to be a good team with continued development. We have somewhat wasted the last 12 months though.

One example, last year I felt Setterfield turned the corner and was establishing himself as an AFL footballer, we quickly forget he played some very good games. Why did we place him on a wing? We shot his confidence from round 1. We have to instil confidence and belief through actions not just words. If Cripps isn't in the square Setterfield should be.

We need to look at other clubs that have made brutal and brave decisions. Although Curnow is playing well what benefit is it long term with him taking so many centre bounces. I think you have to maintain some integrity in selection since he has been one of our most consistent this year, so he could be playing the high half forward moving up to stoppages role. And as a great runner he could do this role for at least a year or two.

Teague finally made the 'tough' decision to drop Murphy but at the same time plays Levi, Stump and TDK. Yes Levi has played an important role for us in the past but he is now hampered by injury and severely out of form, Pittonet literally can't jump and is a liability around the ground. Take a different approach. Play TDK and allow any other non Rolls Royce player to jump up in the ruck to relieve.

Up until a few weeks ago I was calling for Betts to be dropped, I don't think that can happen atm. I want to see honey get games in this year though as an investment to 2022.

The bye can't come quick enough for this coaching group they desperately need some time to reflect, take a deep breath and change things up with their approach. Swans changed theirs in the hub last year and further developed it in the off season.

Back the youth in by playing them in key roles like Sydney and Essendon have, don't bring them in and set them up to fail. Dow and LOB should be playing this week.

Confidence and belief is the key, what an opportunity the current coaching staff have in trying to instil this and set the club up for 2022.

Reckon the big mistake was in promising Williams the midfield. And that meant Fisher out.
Hopefully some sense prevails and they all go to and stay in the right positions.
Agree on Setters.
However it does say that Teague has tried things so that is a positive in his learning curve.
TDK is still raw. 3 years away from the body and mind to be permanent ruck. We can't afford to ruin him out of desperation but as a forward that could work and just 10 mins a quarter in the square.
