I too thought Murphy as captain was the wrong move - a great and loyal player but certainly not leadership material. To my mind we made a huge mistake in not making our little champion Simmo captain.
Murph was the star player at the time was better for membership id expect was the clubs thinking šŸ™„

Maybe I'm playing favourites but I don't think Jones and Curnow are the ringleaders here.

No, I'm purely listing all of our players who have played under multiple coaches.

I think he is too soft.

It's also compounded by the clubs approach of making the club an overly happy place to be. It's like camp kookamunda.

There needs to be more of a balance between happiness and fear.

That's sounds nice. If I rename the board Camp Kookamunda, will we all be friends again?

I get that, I was just thinking that the two who've had to work from the VFL are probably unlikely to be the ones who don't want to work hard. Could be wrong though!

I don't think they are part of the problem either.

I think Murphy and Gibbs were coddled and turned into Blue heroes far too easily and both had long periods of conditional football.

I love big Levi, but how on earth he survived a full career with multiple sub standard seasons amongst a few decent ones, smacks of a lack of killer instinct in our list management and selection committee.
.
Bret Thornton back in the day, was never made accountable for failings. Love Plow too, but he's cruising a lot. We just don't bring in replacements for these guys so we are content with inconsistent results.

SPS has played 90 odd games. How many times in our bests?

Love Teague as a person but he has had ample time with the playing group and it’s just not been a good fit. Wins have come from individual talent and I am still yet to see a viable game plan. His softly, softly approach screams doormat. Players are walking all over him and just picking up a paycheck.

l’d go with Scott or Lyon. Probably the only coaches who will make sure the players earn their paycheck or it’s the magoos for them.

Until the player culture changes and we HTFU it will be rinse and repeat the last 20 years.

Honestly I never got why Thornton copped it so bad. He was a massively overly relied upon, undersized key defender. He was serviceable in isolation but got thrown to the wolves all too often.

Those 4 have been my 4 biggest bete noire's of the last 15 years. Driven me spare.

But i do acknowledge that Murphy and Gibbs were taught and ruined by us as a Club.

IMO, the genesis of our woe is handing leadership of the team to the likes of Whitnall, Fevola, Stevens, Scotland and Houlihan. How else were impressionable lads and unnatural leaders like Murphy and Gibbs gonna turn out when it was their time to lead?

PS i know you probably already know this. Rhetorical question.

Oh I can't forget Fevola when it comes to conditional workrate and not being pulled into line.

At least he held the ball up to signal something.

I feel a bit sorry for Teague because a lot of the problem is the culture of the place. Players do not give 100%. Low level effort, lack of aggression not committing to contests, not committing to chasing. Coach can demand it all they want, this has to be driven by the leadership group.

"Fit in or f*** off" a quote from Clarkson to Josh Gibson that helped make his career. Reckon our leaders or coaches are going to be that forward with those who don't put in? I have my doubts.

I had a discussion regarding the above two paragraphs with a friend of mine yesterday, I think you hold a similar view, that I disagree with.

Our players, are a product of their environment, the effort they put in, how much they chase, how little they tackle, the lack of aggression, not committing to contests, is all a by product of the standards the coach and the coaching staff sets.

The coach picks the team week in, week out, by continuing to pick multiple players who do all of the things you mentioned above, he sets the standard for the whole club and it’s like a cancer.

I can’t imagine how SPS thought after coming on as the sub against the Swans (I think) having 14 possessions in 3/4 and then being dropped, despite Williams having 8 possessions in a full game, or when Martin gets picked, despite being invisible for a run of games, but it’s ok because he has a good game and gets a pass for a few weeks, Setterfield coming in, after not playing any footy for 5 weeks ahead of others, playing well in the 2s, there are lots more, but they set a standard, or a lack thereof.

I feel sorry for Teague in the sense that it becomes personal for so many, but to me, the team is a reflection of him and his methods, we won’t develop a ruthless team with a coach that is Too scared not to upset anyone, or drop anyone for underperforming.

Walsh is no messiah
He has earned or maybe you haven’t seen ?

No need to put him under the pressure of being Captain, if a change is needed Weitering is primed to take over now. Walsh has time.

Your missing the point
Walsh thrives on it
Other take it as additional pressure

He can still wait, I think Weitering has earned a chance to do the job before him.

He is not the right personality
Can not you see this?

There are many different types of personalities that have been successful in leadership positions, It's not a one size fits all thing.

We shall see. Never heard of mute captains before, pun intended. No let’s all get real and this is fact. When the going gets tough, both current captains go into their shells. Some captains we have.
jacob is that, but awesome player. Walsh is or will be a captains captain.

Thinking about our coaching and staff setup the other day, with the soft cap I reckon we need to commit to people long term so we can back/front load things. It's a huge risk, it sounds a bit scary but I feel this could be a make or break moment. Sign Teague and Russell up for 6 years, bring in some better assistants and med staff. It's a make or break risk IMO.
I had to read that 2 times. I got it right the first time..
