Roast David Walls -draft master but trade flop

Walls is legitimately the best thing to happen to this club’s list makeup.

They go safe and reliable with those really high end picks and are pretty impressive at getting first round talent in seconds rounds and picking up a cracking, 150-200 gamer from deep in the drafts.

The issue is that final execution out there. I think they’re also developed to the peak of their ability too. They’re just patronised for too long when they hit that ceiling or just don’t have the passion or competitiveness out there.
Not sure about the second rounders. Isn't Nicholls our first second rounders in about four years? Nothing surer than Freo trading out their future second rounder.

The McVee trade will go down as a great trade is my prediction. Supporters have a natural bias assessing trades so most trades are deemed to be paying overs by th in klie team getting a player for either picks or another player. One thing Walls has done successfully is that he has gotten players who have wanted to come to the club to the club if that makes sense. I've had a look at the draft and there is very little difference between the quality of players which will be available at 12 (likely pick 15 or 16) and players at 19 (eg likely to be taken around 23-25). In fact at around 25 there are a ton of wingers and small forwards who would fill a need on our list unlike pick 16 where if we went best available and get someone like Phillipou or Dovaston but I don't think they are significantly better than those who will be available at our current pick who fill a need like Oudshoorn-Bennier, Barker, Oskar Taylor, Narn, Fred or Picket to name but a few. That's why I like Walls doing the trading to be honest. He can link up draft info to our trading process. I also think 19 might go down as much as many are predicting. The first GC pick is likely to include 2 picks before 19 at least.

We lost 6 players from our list, we've gained McVee ,so it brings it down to 5. Our total list number was 44, do we have to meet that total in 2026? You saying we only have 2 more spots to fill in the main list with picks 20 & 47? That would leave us still 3 short to max out at 44, so they would probably all be rookie selections? , using 69,90,108 etc which would hardly ever give much chance to get what you want. Maybe they may have eyes on some established players in the lesser leagues.
They say we were looking at Harry Boyd as a backup ruckman, I suppose you can get him for a bag of chips.
Forgot about the players we traded out. I expect we are looking at a free agent or two as we should still have most of the war-chest we were going to throw at Warner.

Before you all start crying how about you read the analysis from the ABC that is more than skin deep compared to other media outlets.

Interesting stuff and provides more clarity.

I'm not exactly thrilled by today's trade but now you've laid out the full history, it's... alright? A couple of bad ones but a lot of good ones. A lot of them look better in hindsight as well.

I will say he hasnt really bent anyone over a barrel a la the Weller trade which probably doesn't help his perception. People like to view every trade as a zero sum game with a winner and a loser. If McVee (and Whan) turn out well i won't really care much even if pick 33 turns out a gun.

The Bolton trade being a flop when it netted us Reid is a good laugh. That doesn't mean we "won" the trade or Richmond "lost" because again it isn't a zero sum game. It improved our team, regardless of Shai's hot and cold form, and the Tigers will probably improve from it as well.

The notion hes some drafting genius is also OTT imo
Regarding Reid, the thinking would have been around which players are going to be in the mix at our pick, and Walls being happy with the likely options.

The talk being that one of Berry, Allen or Reid would be there (I liked Cooper Hynes who went 3 picks later and Berry).

This trade pick exchange has the same whiff about it.

I'm looking at how some other clubs list managers perform and wondering if Walls contract needs extension.

Looks like we have absolutely killed it. Kudos Wallsy 👏

Better insight than many journos offer.

Cross check against expected return from draft picks would be great.

I was also going to mention this. The only thing is not all pick 3s are the same let alone players deeper in the draft.

They may have incorporated expected return into some of their calculations without expressly mentioning it.

Not the knowledgeable posters like you and I though. We are smert!

One curiosity this year is that lots say this years draft is crap after pick 15 or 20 or so. Personally I don’t know how anyone can make that statement with such certainty at this early stage but anyway.

Then they say we’ve done really well to get the pick swaps to secure NGA players like Whan and Luke at the very end of the draft/rookie draft.
But If the draft really is crap though… doesn’t that mean that we shouldnt bother selecting those players?
If they aren’t good enough for the top 50 or so

I dunno.

Twomey doesn’t have Blake Oodshorn-Bennier in the top 30, and that kid looks really good, so I reckon there’s some talent kicking around

Look like some injured players who couldn't play in 2025 properly may be a bargain and a tally better than the top 30... like BOB,Mikunda,Tom Matthews and one key forward from Victoria..I forgot his name.. and may be more

A bit of the shine has come off the draft master is recent years as well.

The entire 2022-23 cohort looks pretty grim.

Sebit Kuik (MSD) - delisted without a game
Hugh Davies - 2 games (0 in 2025)
Tom Emmett - delisted after 15 games (bit unlucky actually)
Max Knobel - Poached by GCS after 0 games - still on 0 games.
Corey Wagner - looked good for a while. Could still be. Possibly the shinning light of the group.
Josh Draper - looked OK for a while. Replaced as injury cover by McDonald.
Conrad Williams - delisted wthout a game

Ethan Stanley - MSD - delisted after 2 games
Cooper Simpson - 5 games. Jury out.
Ollie Murphy - plays reserves at Peel
Jack DeLean - delisted without a game
Odin Jones - delisted without a game

He did get good value out of the SSPs recently though (Sharp (kind of), Voss, Narke and Dudley) and Murphy Reid is a star so he still on good standing.

Needs a good draft this year and next to regain his crown as 'draft master'.

Bit of a shallow analysis considering we've had one first round pick in the last 3 years (who is a gun and will be one of the best players in the league) and Simpson is promising, looks like a bargain for where we drafted him.

The rest were lower, speculative and development project picks

Still to early but I count 3 AFL standard players from 2 drafts plus we used our 1st rounders for Jackson who is an A grader.
1 A grader and 3 AFL players every 2 years is fine and those are his worst 2 drafts ever.

Of course it would look better with high picks, but it doesn't take a 'draft master' to pick good players in the single digits. I think his reputation is built on using those late picks really well - Schultz, Freddy, Switta, Meek, Ryan, Treacy etc.

I'm not having a go, I'm just pointing out it's been a while since he's had that knack outside mature agers.
