What are anyones thoughts on Dave Warner batting 6 in the test team?

If he bats well he is a great opener can set the tone early and put the opposition on the backfoot real early.

But if not, much like Sehwag from India we could be 1 for not much after 3 and the opposition will be up and about.

I wouldnt mind seeing him drop down to 6. He is too talented no to be in the team, is a great fielder and handy bowler as well, so he offers a lot. At 6 a lot of the pressure will be off him as well and could play more freely. This would mean moving Clarke up to 3, Hussey to 5 and maybe Watson back to the top.

After he gets some more Test Experience learns how to build and innings then he could maybe move back up, and be more a Matthew Hayden type opener then a Sehwag.

I wouldn't want to touch the middle order right now while they are piling on the runs. Clarke is immovable at 5 and Hussey seems comfortable at 6... perhaps Warner could move to 3 instead?

But yes it is frustrating to be constantly losing an early wicket or three

True, im more thinking at the end of the summer when Ponting and Hussey arent there ;)

If it was a viable option, they'd have shifted Hughes down the order to begin with.

Wont happen, nor should it. If you're an opener and struggling to make runs against the new rock, out you go.

Don't like it. Five and six are our most solid positions with Clarke and Hussey. They could bat at other positions but fact is they are most comfortable and successful where they are. If Warner can't compile anything as an opener then he is out.

Always wanted to see Hughes at 6 personally, though since he has tightened his technique up, I don't think he would be a good option. With Warner, it is hard to say. I think he is worth persisiting with at the top of the order, but if Hughes or another opener begin to bang the house down, and this coincides with Ponting or Hussey declining, it is worth considering. But I would much prefer that he open.

Can't he just not play at all. Not a test batsmen, he will never build an innings like Cowan did: Hit the score, maybe, build it patiently - no.

Hobart disagrees.

You'd think from reading bigfooty that Warner threw his bat at a ball 2 metres outside off. He got a ball on an excellent line and length, tried to play it with a straight bat and got done in by movement off the pitch. He might not make it through the summer if he keeps failing, but statements like "he'll never build an innings" are massively short-sighted. Especially with his innings against NZ in mind.

Warner at 6 would be interesting. For the moment we're settled in the middle order so there's no need to change anything, and he'd have to improve his technique against spin.

He's a potential match-winner as an opener. People saying he can't build an innings have very short memories. What he's got to learn, IMO, is that it's OK to throw the bat at the ball a bit, even early. It's his strength, and even if he gets out for 20-30, he's likely taken a whole lot of shine off the ball. He needs to back his eye and natural talent a bit more. So long as he plays balls along the ground (which he's actually very good at), he'll be great.

Well worth a look after Hussey retires. Providing he handles spin well enough he could be similar to Gilchrist in regards to his clean, power hitting and take the game away from the opposition very suddenly. Like those blokes taking advantage facing an older ball when it's not moving about so much. Right now he seems be a 100 or nothing type at the top of the order with the new ball moving about.

Actually, Warner was pretty open about his form and the fact that he should be leaving certain balls alone. Doesn't mean he can't make some cheeky comments (and they are cheeky) about the SA batsmen.
I realise he was open about his form.. but if he wants to make comments about the SA batsmen, find something else that he doesn't suck at himself first. It would be like Cosgrove laughing at Darren Lehman getting run out because he was fat..
