The short answer as to why they didn't appeal is they didn't want to go to war with CA and end their careers.

What worse instances of bringing the game into disrepute have there been by Australians in the past, say, 40 years? If that was the official charge and I don't remember there ever being a hearing or a chance to defend themselves then no way. There have been far far worse instances of Bringing the Game into Disrepute(just a silly catch all rule to get rid of those disliked) than this to suddenly be the precedent.
As an aside, this is the Cricket Australia process:If that was the official charge and I don't remember there ever being a hearing or a chance to defend themselves then no way. Perhaps, another explanation is the video footage was damning, so what would they say on appeal? I don't know how the sandpaper got in my underwear, maybe Mum put it in there when doing the washingThe short answer as to why they didn't appeal is they didn't want to go to war with CA and end their careers.

No, but they could have pointed out that all other incidents of ball tampering have resulted in short bans. As pointed out, bringing the game into disrepute is a catch-all that allows them to put in place whatever ban they want. CA needed to make a statement, players decided to accept it and hope to resume their career in a year.Perhaps, another explanation is the video footage was damning, so what would they say on appeal? Has to be by Australians, as the 9 and 12 month suspensions were by Cricket Australia, not the ICC.
Lillee and Marsh - Agreed. Seen at the time to be the actions of larrikins, and dealt with accordingly.Marsh and Lillee betting against their own side
Warne and Mark Waugh taking money from a bookie to provide inside info
Warne's drug suspension
Even some of the more personal sledging
That says it all about how cricket is administered when cheating gets a 1 match suspensionThey got exactly the same punishment as other had from the ICC for ball tampering. From memory. 1 match each.
Cricket Australia charged them for bringing the game into disrepute which was more around the planning, lying, concealing and what they said in the first post match interview..... they said tape and not sand paper.
This is what doesn't fit.
How did Warner instigate it? Bancroft has been playing representative cricket all his life, followed by Club, State and national Cricket. Pretty sure he knows what ball tampering is and doesn't need a lesson on sand paper. (What exactly was that sugar in his pocket for in the 5th test in Sydney btw?).
All teams in world cricket have been fidgeting with the ball for years. Not surprising given the penalties are lax and the rules inconsistent. Only the sand paper wasn't a great look so scapegoats came. (And maybe the bowlers didn't know specifically about sandpaper but would've known the ball was being "worked on" all summer). "IF" the punishment is for the 1 instance hard to see what Warner has being pinged for.
I'd have them back and lobby the ICC to clarify exactly what the rules are on tampering and crack down on all the ridiculous personal abuse that goes on.

I can't really make a judgement call until we know the whole truth. The CA narrative is this was the first time Australia tampered with a ball and Smith didn't know a thing. The first point is obviously bullshit and the second is doubtful.Smiff's suspension was too long, main thing he needed to suffer was permanently losing the captaincy.
Davie Warner is a legend and I hope he categories his misdemeanours and learns to gather his family into his rehabilitation...David Warner is a little bitch and a national disgrace. I hope he gets sledged for the rest of his natural life.

he he.. that is the point of the chronically misguided and the less muddy minded and wounded persons of us alll..Ironically this I understand
Here's a good article about Warner from 3 years ago Crowe wrote in a column for Cricinfo. “Soon one day it will lead to an incident that will sully the game for good.” and this one https://www.google.com.au/amp/s/amp...r-martin-crowe-thuggish-behaviour-rohit-shrma
I miss Martin Crowe. He was one of the most elegant batsmen of all time and he carried that elegance into his writing. He was a great thinker about the game and he was right.
My conspiracy theory is that Smith/Warner/Bancroft lying to Cricket Australia during the investigation thereby "bringing the game into disrepute" internally as well as externally is the only reason for the bans. Taking the spin job rogue rather than collaborating.I can't really make a judgement call until we know the whole truth. Just bought Geoff Lemon's book on the whole sorry saga on on the cover where they've embossed the title they've used sandpaper. For Adelaide people Dymocks in town has shed loads of signed copies of Warnies' new book shaped object.
Aussie crowds will not give it to him mate. One decent score when he comes back and he will be a hero. The opinions of a few chumps on Big Footy is hardly an indication of how the Nation feels about him. Real cricket fans will open him back with open arms.
I think he meant "arm him open with welcome backs"Did you mean "open him back with welcome arms"?
