mike whitney is a big warner fan and the ban was excessive
Whit is the long serving President of Randwick "The Randy Wicks" and now Randwick-Petersham "The Randy Petes" in the Sydney Grade Comp. Whit is a fine man and a loyal servant of the game and his club. Warner lost me when he failed to turn up and field in a Grade game for Randwick some years back and instead had a net and went to the Races. Randwick (quite rightly) were denied a sub fielder as all the other released NSW players turned up for their teams and Randwick played with ten in first grade for the first time in the clubs history. As a former Randwick player and lower grade captain it was a disgrace. Whit is a very cool and loyal cat, possibly too loyal - hopefully Warner is repaying the club now by his enforced spell with them.

Unrelated - I’ve heard some classic stories about Whitney’s efforts with the night tools while on tour

Isnt there a story re him and pitch tampering because he didnt want to play one Saturday? Or is that the same occasion you mentioned?

How long is it going to be before people realise that CA is their employer and can ban them as they see fit?
And that "oh but everyone else is/was doing it too" isn't an excuse or reason to be lenient. Cheating is wrong and I don't want anyone doing it. Especially not Australian cricketers.

Agree 100% ... We also have been the first to slam anyone for doing anything wrong and the loudest about it, I think this is why the punishments were so hard as well, we can't carry on the way we do and not be seen to be harsh on our own when they stuff up

Yep, the Australians said they never crossed the line, they knew where the line was, they were the guardians of the line.

Sadly, we now know the line they were talking about was at the checkouts of Bunnings.

Frankly, I'd rather our side lose the next two years and come out the other side than let that bogan piece of shit back in a baggy green. People can blame CA culture all they like but a 30 year old...and I use this term in its absolute broadest sense...man who has played cricket for 25 years decides it is time for us to take sandpaper out on the field; we can move on without him.

Warner's latest comments on the ban are actually... good.

"As players we are here to do a job and that’s to come out here and play premier cricket and work our backsides off to make cricket a better game.”

“At the end of the day I’m sitting here 12 months on the sideline, that’s my take on it,” he said.

“That’s why I want everyone to keep being positive about the guys that are playing (in the national team) and pump them up. We can’t keep sitting here going they’re going to be in or they’re not going to be in (for next year’s World Cup).

“We just want the game to be pumped up as much as we can. We understand there is going to be a bit of negative impact on what happened but we just have to keep smiling and putting our best foot forward to make sure Australia is enjoying Australian cricket.”

Well... can't argue with that.

Also said he was ashamed about what happened which was really the first time he's shown remorse.

Is there any chance that Warner emerges from all this having learned some humility, scaled back his abrasive in-your-face on field persona and finishes his career as a more mature player/person?

When it first happened I thought he'd never play for Australia again but that's looking increasingly unlikely with every game we play.

Of course there is some chance. Given his history, I have my doubts.
He will be kept on a tight leash, so might be less of a prat on-field simply because he gets pulled into line rather than being let loose.

He was always going to get an immediate recall, even if the batting had surpringly shown itself to be adequate in his absence.

I had the same view as you and in the past he would definitely have been marked NTBS. Having said that you either believe in rehabilitation or you don’t. If you do he is definitely entitled to a second chance - provided he has made some changes to the abrasive personality that he had become. We can’t retrofit brains and clearly he lacks a bit in this department, but he would need to be a bit more humble and the thing that keeps popping up in my head is the “scared eyes” comment of a few years ago - how he was ever made vice captain is another issue. I don’t think he’s an automatic re selection at Test Match level because personally I would like to see him demonstrate his behavioural change before you rush him back in. But if we struggle as anticipated it will be a very big test of the brave new world of CA to see what they do.

There's sometimes a swing in public perception. All the blame, derision, anger etc gets directed at Warner. He's seen (correctly) as the root cause and the perpetrator. There's a tipping point though where so much negativity gets heaped at one person that people actually start to feel sorry for him.

Public sentiment swings back the other way.

Then people want to see the response, the fightback, the recovery. The redemption becomes a feelgood story.

I don't know if he has the personality for Australians to ever truly get behind him but the bit of contrition he showed with his latest comments is at least a start.

I had one of those memories come up on my FB feed yesterday. It was from 3 years ago and it was my 8 year old son at his first day of test cricket standing to applaud Warner's hundred v New Zealand. He was 200 plus not out at the end of the day's play. The first 2 balls he faced were dispatched through mid wicket and the covers for 4. It was incredible stuff.

He has made his own bed and his personality flaws may see his career end early in the same way it happened tp KP.

My now 11 year old son said to me on the weekend that he is not sure if he should support the Aussies anymore after 'Sandpapergate". I told him he should. The players have been punished and there seems to be a definite desire for change. (The pom in me wanted to tell him that they have always been cheats :) ).

Not sure that bringing back Warner will help with the new image that the new Australian regime is trying to portray, but will that be unfair to punish somebody twice ?

I've never particularly liked David Warner, and have been very harsh on him since the sandpaper suspension. But he has a 12 month suspension, and once that is done, he is entitled to be considered for selection just like everyone else. And as he is one of our best batsmen in all formats, I expect to see him back almost immediately.

All of Warner, Bancroft and Smith will return to the Australian side. Plenty of cricket ahead for all of them and I refuse to believe that the incident happened in isolation so have no doubt the remainder of the group were aware of what was going on. Hence should not be ostracised by those who matter.
