Interesting hesitation when asked who else was involved and the question was dodged. This stinks
Just hedging his bets. Maybe it’s not about implicating others, but rather not implicating himself further. First objective was to try a garner public support with an heartfelt apology, and then judge reaction to see if there’s a way back.

That was all about him getting caught, and apologising to his family.

the bloke is a massive hypocrite when he dodged the questions if anyone else knew, and had he done it before.
I'm glad he did this interview, it confirms what most have suspected ever since they were caught.

Well done Davey, seem like you have a heart after all,the DeKoch incident surely got to his head and he needs to control his anger,he will probably go to a doctor for that.

Seems like he is going to do everything he can to get himself together, just an unfortunate incident, one he is paying for and regrets for the rest of his life but let it be known,he didn’t murder anyone or bash his wife.

I am willing to forgive him.

No warner fan but I feel for him in what he can clearly say, not say.

CA have clearly learned nothing. The whole place needs a complete clean out ASAP. The FFA look pro’s compared to them.
Alan Jones raised a very pertinent point regarding Sutherland and how he's handled this matter. Apparently failed to come down on his son straight after he cause significant damage to the hotel room representing an affiliated Cricket Australia side (not sure which one).

Selectively answering questions just raises suspicions. After hearing Warner speak my sense is more of the team were involved, it wasn’t the first time (unknown extent or means) and Warner is being made a scapegoat.

Wonder if we’ll ever hear the truth (post career book/s?) or if CA’s attempts to cover this up are successful.

He was in a no win situation
Tell the truth and be branded a dog for dubbing in your mates, or say nothing as he did and Be accused of dishonesty
It’s fairly obvious others were involved, probably the bowlers, and CA didn’t want to have to suspend the whole team.
I’ll give him credit for sticking it out through the questioning, unlike Smith who ran away from the grilling as it all got too hard for him.

Has he compared it the unjust knifing of Tony Abbott by the big bad dishonest Malcolm Turnbull?

No way Warner is scapegoat. Avoided questions for one reason only, and that’s so he doesn’t put himself in deeper.

Warner just kept his powder dry. If they dont let him back - look out.

Yeah exactly right, damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t. I will always have doubt over the current playing group and coaches after this incident.

People need to try and not over think the press conference.

Took responsibility for his own actions whilst keeping all options on the table.

I'd suggest that has been the advice from his inner circle

Sounds to me like they have all been told to (a) not talk about others, and (b) not talk about whether it has happened before. They all avoided these questions to a greater or lesser extent, I think Smith and Bancroft were a bit more subtle about it. Davey not being too smart had no other option than to take the classic politicians tactic of just say what you want to say no matter what they ask so he didn't accidentally say something he shouldn't. Who told them to take this approach I'm not sure, CA, their families, their lawyers?

On not talking about others, none of them would want to look like they are dumping anyone else in to poo as it might make them look worse.

On the question of whether they have ever done anything like this before, what is meant by 'this'? The sandpaper, ball tampering in general, using mints which by some is considered fair and by others not. No, best not to answer that question or you will open a can of worms.

Why was it one of the 3 questions he didn’t answer then? Could simply have said no, it was my idea. That would not have put him in deeper either as CA have already placed that blame onto him.

Clearly Warner feels he is being made a scapegoat. Further to this Smith’s initial term of leadership group is an odd way to describe just one other.

Maybe part of the deal was that some topics were off limits if they wanted to be considered for selection after their bans have expired. Much more to play out in all this yet I would think.

Part of an apology is to admit what you've done.

None of the cricketers have said anything beyond 'their part in it'.

BS corporate legalese apologies.
Any half decent journo should have led with 'your employer, CA, has named you as the architect of the ball sanding, do you accept this?'

If he answered questions by saying no others involved and it was all my idea, he’s never coming back and he knows it. Warner is hanging on to the slim chance his apology is accepted by a sympathetic Australian public and CA says be a good boy from now on and you’ll get a chance. This is all about redemption for him.
