His behaviour had been poor over the years but the sledging he and his wife got in South Africa was appalling and overlooked by the world cricket media.

He’s just going to have to suck it up, put his head down and get on with it.

Lol....hahahaha, Davey the victim

Let’s remember that Warner started it in SA sledging De Koks sister..... Oh but that doesn’t fit the Australian narrative does it.

Warner obviously thinks it is fine because he gave out similar and he wouldn’t be a hypocrite now would he?

For the record I think crass and distasteful sledging is aporant and is not part of any game.

To say “you can’t bring family into sledging” isn’t the point because what Rod Marsh and Botham said was funny and fair, but then others are not.

For me the line is, are you trying to genuinely mentally upset the opposition or are you trying to be witty and funny and make them lose some concentration. Australian cricket has admitted that we have been trying to do the former, as we call it, ‘mental degradation’. But when we get it back we cry and carry on like bitches saying “mummy mummy they went over the line”. Pffffft, pathetic.

It was mentioned yesterday on radio that Hughes called Warner a disgrace.

Warner’s wife has come out to defend him and said the following...

Asked by co-panellist Peter FitzSimons if the comments were "abusive", she said: "I personally would put it into that category but I'm talking for myself."

From that I wouldn’t think it was the “killed my brother/kill you” comments. Tony Sheehan making shit up again

On the other hand if the brother comment is true is the sort of thing that is just too sad, uncomfortable and awkward to really bring up ever again. If true I'd say Phil's brother probably needs grief counselling or something as it seems like the sort of thing someone would say out of pain more than anger to me.

Calling him a disgrace is tame enough that I would be surprised if that's all there was too it.

I’d hope Hughes didn’t make the comments he’s reported to have made. However, he clearly thinks Warner and co lied to the coronial inquiry about the ‘kill ya’ comments in the field. If the disgrace remark refers to his belief they lied or covered up aspects of Hughes’ death, that their bowling of bouncers was deliberate and therefore they carry some guilt, I can see how it would get under his skin.

I get that Warner is the last person that should be talking about a line when it comes to sledging but this has no place on a cricket field. You’re right that Hughes needs to find a way to move forward.

From reports this morning all Hughes said was Warner was a disgrace, which is a worthy opinion.
Candice Warner on nine sports Sunday
“I won’t go into the details yesterday but David was taken aback by the comments, and thought they went a little bit too far, so he decided to remove himself from the game,” she said on Channel Nine’s Sports Sunday.
“He left the field because first of all he didn’t like what he was hearing and where that could have been taken. It was hurtful, very hurtful.”

So Davey was “hurt”. So Warner can say things to mentally degregate opposition but no one is allowed to ‘hurt’ him.

Warner is within his rights to walk off if what is being said is true.. the best course of action was to remove himself from the situation. I personally think he's on a hiding to nothing, he bites back and he's crucified he walks off he's called a campaigner not taking what he gives. He can't win.

The hate and vitriol this guy gets you'd actually believe he was public enemy number one. He's an egotistical loud mouthed bogan hardly the piece of ##@$ we all wanna pretend he is.

He has another option. Don't respond and continue batting. You know, the most reasonable and clear option.

She said there is a difference between sledging and abuse and what was said yesterday was abuse but then when she was asked what the difference was she said she didn't want to go into details. I would have thought sledging and abuse were one and the same especially when it comes to some of Warner's sledging.

There seems to be an arbitrary line that Warner shifts when it suits him, only other people cross that line while he never crosses it despite doing the same thing.

The All Blacks never and have never sledged and look at them.

Perfectly said.

It is actually written in the laws of cricket spirit of the game

5. It is against the Spirit of the Game:
To direct abusive language towards an opponent or umpire

Obviously the Australians of the last 35 years have not read this or have their own definition of abusive language.

It seems that you are saying that Warner shouldn't be deciding where this mythical "line" lies but you can - as per the bolded. Actually, no-one can decide where the "line" is because it is subjective. What is acceptable to one is unacceptable to another.

Even if Jason Hughes did say something to Warner which many may think goes beyond the pale, he may be of such a mindset that he considers what he said to be perfectly justified.

And now we have Warner's wife coming out and deciding that what was said to her husband was "abuse"........it's funny how it becomes that when her husband is on the receiving end and not when he is dishing out the nasty stuff. Spare me.

Maybe we need a "sledging tribunal" to arbitrate on the acceptability of what is said on the sporting field.........

And, as has been pointed out with the McGrath example, it's very much an area where taking the moral high ground is fraught with danger. McGrath did precisely that (ie take the high ground) over a retort involving his (then sick) wife - but apparently his provoking it by saying that an opponent indulges in oral sex with his captain was perfectly acceptable. What a dick (pardon the pun).

Just bought Geoff Lemon's book on the whole sorry saga on on the cover where they've embossed the title they've used sandpaper. For Adelaide people Dymocks in town has shed loads of signed copies of Warnies' new book shaped object.

If the comments were so bad, what were the umpires doing and why didn't they intervene?

This is the most important question that should be answered by cricket overall. Sometimes I think that the powers that be in Australian cricket want controversy because it sells media space and gets attention. A good example of this is just recently on cricket.com.au when trying to promote the upcoming series versus India they went back to a video of Haddin and kholi sledging. When what they should be showing is the bat and ball battle versus kholi who is a once in a generation player who’ll be on display for us to watch and enjoy and watch us trying to get him out.

Yeah McGrath was another classic example of a bloke that was happy to dish out the sledging but couldn't cop it when it came back the other way.

If you can't handle being sledged then you should probably steer clear of sledging other people as you end up looking like a hypocrite if you complain.

If you sledge make it smart or funny, or shut up. "You're f***ing shit" ad nauseum isn't either of those two things.

I detest sledging.

But he's apparently been happy to dish it out for years, so it's a bit rich for him not to be able to cop it in return.

I've never had any time for the bloke, so this just reinforces my personal opinion in that regard.

Kinda seemed to me that rather than not being able to cop it he’s trying everything in his powers to avoid being involved in sledging at all as he tries to atone. It’s necessitated by the strange situation he finds himself and must go against his natural instincts, I’m not a huge fan but kinda feel for him because having to eat humble pie on such a global level can’t be easy on the ego...

I'd imagine the sort of sledging Warner engaged in was neither smart or funny, I doubt any of his sledges will go down in cricket folklore for years to come.

The context here is getting sledged by the brother of a close mate who died on field, I don’t think it’s fair to throw shit at Warner, could have had a lot of things going through his head and sounds like he handled it well and made runs. Good on him.

Bullshit. If we were going to ban every cricketer 12 months for ball tampering there would be a hell of a lot of empty cricket fields during summer. Thank **** Sachin Tendulkar never copped any penalty when he got found guilty, we would have missed out on seeing him bat for 12 months.
Good. If we start banning them then they’ll stop cheating.

What bizarre logic, just because Sachin did it we should turn a blind eye. Some lesser scrub however... oh let’s rub him out for it

After "lol, hahahaha" I lost interest but I believed they called it mental "disintegration".

But to be clear you think sledging is "crass and abhorrent" (you're welcome) but **** David Warner. Amirite?
