Minus the concrete postage stamps in the Aus A series in SA last year.

The attack in that game was like the Darlington Kindergarten 2nd XI. I cannot see how the folk at Ch 9 believe his efforts at Nth Sydney
will translate to Test Matches.

Gotta give him credit - In the last few weeks he couldn't have done any more.

Was pretty much a lock for the first test, particularly given Watson's potentially missing - They weren't gonna bring in 3 new (or returning) players to the top six.

Not a shred of doubt now he'll pad up for the first test.

Anderson and Broad might prove a bit sterner opposition.

You jest, but in all honesty, I would prefer him to have 50 off 200 balls than 100 off 90.

Why? Maybe for a youngster trying to develop in the Shield, but Warner is an attacking batsman. What purpose would be served by him playing in a way to his detriment?

And you wouldn't say that if we lost the deciding Ashes test by, say, 30 runs. ;)

Because if he goes out there with the quick runs mindset and it doesn't pay off we are one down before drinks in the first session.

I'm old fashioned. So sue me.

I don't see it as going out there with the quick runs mindset, but rather keeping it uncomplicated and just letting Dave be Dave. I think he struggled in the ODI arena because he tried to curb his natural game, and it didn't work. Just play your natural game.

An opener's primary job in Test cricket is to see off the opening bowlers and take the shine off the new ball. Either of the above scenarios would bring a pass mark. But I'd take the 100 off 90 every day of the week.

There's no point Warner trying to be something he isn't. Good to see him getting runs

Exactly right. Aggressive Aussie openers like Slater & Stackpole were successful because they played to their strength - aggression. Similarly Hayden, though he played and hit a bit straighter.

I'd prefer 100 off 90.

The problem is that it's either 100 off 90 or 10 off 5. It needs to be 'x' off 90 more often, with 'x' dependent on the conditions, match status, bowling attack etc.

He doesn't need to change his game, he needs to add to it. Being an attacking batsmen is what gives him his strength. If he's constantly hitting the ball to the fence it forces the bowler to change his approach, forces the captain to change his field positioning etc. and is unsettling to the fielding side. The problem being that batsmen who are always attacking can be easy to get out. It's why so many mediocre test bowlers get wickets in ODI/T20 cricket, because the batsmen are constantly looking to score. Warner just needs to chill the **** out once in a while and leave a few wide ones etc.

One of the interesting things in the last ashes series with the batting was if you looked at balls per dismissal (career averages) i think england had something like 8 of the top 9 batsmen contesting the series or something like that, with only clarke in there for australia.

even bresnan, even though he averaged slightly less than our middle order (but not much though, 30 v low to mid 30's), averages about 75 balls per dismissal which was a fair chunk more than all of our batsmen bar clarke.

with our physically brittle bowling attack, in some respects 280 of 100 overs is better for us than 300 of 70 overs because crease occupation can become crucial as it gives our bowlers more rest and recovery time between innings.

That's consistent with the Poms' runs-per-over figures throughout the recent Ashes series. Even though the Poms won the series 3-0 their scoring rate looked more like that of a team that had lost 3-0. Unfortunately their unentertaining, unimaginative brand of cricket was still too much for our team in re-build phase after bottoming-out not long ago.

Glad that he is going to play the first test, so we can see what an embarrassment he is against attacks of any meaning and once and for all be dropped from the Australian test team and cast out as a flat track bully that he is.

Rogers' 117 against NSW will have pleased the selectors. Both openers with tons under their belts heading towards the 1st Test in Brisbane.
