He is also,

a) A big game player. Even though its 20-20, Warner has played a blinder on some big occasions.
b) He does not fear failure. Positive intent is also a Test quality.

I agree this time. He's in form and blokes with that attitude is sorely lacking. You know they'll have a crack.

This is a positive thing for Australian Cricket.

For everyone who has pigeon holed Warner as purely a 20-20 player, let's remember the guy is only 25 years old and has at least 10 years to develop his game and technique into one well suited to Test cricket.

On that note, one of Warner's greatest features is sharp hand eye co-ordination, this makes him a deadly master blaster and reliable fielder. Having the hand-eye coordination is part of the battle, just look at how Ponting is finding trouble now that age is taking away his reflexes. If Warner can tighten his technique a little more (and there has been drastic improvement in the last 2 years), he could well be the next Matthew Hayden of the Aussie cricket team. Sure, still a long way to go for that to happen, but I think you all forget Hayden was predominantly an ODI specialist when he started, the Test role came later on.

Hughes must be dropped either way.

A bigger worry is Ponting. The man was a legend, but his eyes and reflexes have somewhat deserted him now. His ego was always an issue, now its a death knell. Ponting has always had a habit of getting himself out walking across his stumps and trying to play through mid-wicket, but it's fair to say that aside from Sachin he is probably one of the most video analysed batsmen for opposition teams and they have obviously developed strategies for getting him out. He either needs to accept that his technique must be changed, or retire.

Haddin has not respected his place in Test cricket for quite some time. Ever since his loose shot, holing out in the 2009 Ashes series decider, I have despised his approached to the game. His keeping skills are well below par. Get rid of the ****ing gum before I break your jaw.

My side for the next Test.

Considering they need to WIN this test to save the series, given that the track will most likely DO LESS than the last, they need to be aggressive and put on runs at a 4.0+ RR.

1. Warner (for Hughes)

3. Khawaja (for Marsh, needs to play the linchpin from here.)

5. Ponting (The ball will be at least 40 overs old by this stage. He will get to 50 before getting his front leg adjacent with the stumps.)

(Hopefully looking at around to 60th over before the next wicket.)

6. Hussey (He's in form, just needs to get in at the crease.)

7. Watson (He gets a good 10-20 overs under his belt before the 2nd new balls.)

8. Siddle (Has the best technique of the rest. Depending on the situation (quick runs or conslidation) would be preferred here. Would give a batsmen like Hussey more reason to stick around.)

9. Johnson (Hack.)

10. Harris (Delay-rey. Looks cumbersome, should duck short balls and throw the sink at half volleys.)

11. Cummins (Give the kid a go. Short bursts.)

is clearly the best batsmen of the tailenders but his confidence is absolutely shot, hasnt made decent runs consistently since he had that great series in SA last time around. 2 50s the past 2 years mixed with a string of low scores in between. Has the ability as a batsmen to be a bowling allrounder quite clearly, is playing like a number 10 atm and bowling horribly therefore is a liability and should be on last notice.

I rate Aaron Finch, but if he can't make runs in the shield this year why is he going to make any at test level? Would be as bad a decision as picking Hughes after averaging 12 for NSW in the Ashes last year.

Worse. At least Hughes had debuted, had scored centuries at Test level, and played a specialist position that had few legitimate competitors (I'm still yet to hear a genuine alternative suggestion to Hughes' selection, actually). Finch has none of those things going for him. If he's selected it will make Hughes' selection look brilliant. A better comparison would be Smith's selection, but even that was understandable; he'd already played Test cricket (albeit as a bowler), and had had at least one dominant Shield season. Doesn't justify it though.

The issue is currently that NSW gets a lot more media and selector exposure then any other state, so a player only has to make half the scores of other players in other states to be noticed.

There is a bias to NSW players, but its not deliberate, its just the way the media and selector landscape is set at the moment, its going to naturally happen.

Warner has shown form, but players in other states show form and don't get noticed because they don't get coverage the NSW players get.

To fix the current issues in Australian cricket, Cricket Australia need to get the coverage of the 6 state teams more even, until that happens, we will continue to miss potential super stars in other states.

Warner is deserving, but his efforts get noticed a lot earlier then other players outside of NSW.

Surely Warner is not the best opening batsman outside the current Test squad. If he is, we are in more strife than I originally thought we were.

Everyone else (Marsh, Fergusson, Paine & Maddinson) is either injured or just coming back from injury.

I dunno. His technique is pretty good. Healthy "competitive" streak in him to put it nicely. His eye & power is fantastic.
You'd like another solid year into him @ state level, but reality is there's just not that much competition out there.

he may or may not be a success but he's the only bloke int he frame who is fit and scoring runs that's not in south africa.

lynn is injured, maddinson is not scoring enough runs but isn't doing badly, mitch marsh's batting isn't near up to standard yet, ferguson and finch can barely get the ball of the square at the moment.

it's probalby not ideal, but the fact remains he is the only option. the proof of that is for everyone having a whinge, i haven't actually seen one other name thrown up.

When other teams do similarly (e.g. WA with M.Marsh, Vic with Pattinson, etc), these guys attract just as much attention as the NSW players do.

Best performing in the Shield? Warner has had one innings this year. Pattinson is well down the wickets aggregate behind Cutting who is having an excellent year. But Mitchell Marsh actually has a far superior record in terms of strike rate and a slightly better average. Jayde Herrick is leading the pack at present as regards wickets.

I agree with picking both Pattinson and Warner - if we could, all the usual self-affirming crap coming out of the team is turning my stomach - but it's a very limited 'best performances' criteria you are using there.

not gonna happen. foxsports are based in sydney and of course give more coverage to sydney teams (in all sports). just the way it is

This. Warner is a very good option. He has worked very hard on tightening up his technique deserves a chance.

The selectors have made a rod for their own back by having Hughes in. They are probably too scared to have 2 batsmen opening who may be considered cavalier and will find it difficult to play Hughes and Warner. Watson needs to drop down the order to 6 if he is going to bowl so much and his bowling is worthy of his overs.

Khawaja should play ahead of Warner, but at 3 so the selectors have the problem of trying to fit in young players at the top of the order while Ponting struggles and Clarke has shown that he is a number 5. He should not be put up the order just because he is captain.

If the slectors had been more prudent in the last year or 2, some of these younger players would have played a few more games already. As it stands, too many changes would have to occur to give the side the look that it really should have.

Disagree. The other states play young kids just as much, if not more. But we - most of the time - actually make them earn their spot to get into the team - see Warner - and stay in the team. If Callum Ferguson was in NSW you can bet he'd either have a FC average about 40 or the amount of FC games played by him would be below 40. (34.98 and 58 currently. that average is actually getting worse)
