I think I'd prefer Cowan with Watson and Rogers at 3. If Watson breaks down with the workload, he breaks down. Might as well roll the dice in the position we are in.

If Warner lines up in the first test it is a huge **** up with his punishment. Maybe he has been effectively dropped and they are just keeping their options of him playing in the first test open in case of injury and that's why they haven't come out and said he has been suspended from the test. That would leave them with little room to move if Clarke doesn't come up, someone else is injured or Hughes can't buy a run in the warm ups.

Chris Rogers averaging 65 in County Cricket this year. Cowan 45.

I really don't know much about County Cricket these days and the divisions quality but they are healthy to very good averages.

Interesting.

And I wish Clarke would stop calling him "Davey."
If not Davey Warner, how about Wacko Warner?

Maybe not out Winthrop way. :p

If Wikipedia cites it as Australian slang, that's good enough for me to suggest it has a decent amount of use.

I use it in normal life, as do a lot of my mates.

At least around the people I hang around with a four letter word starting with c gets far more use.

Rogers has a 200 and a 180 in County cricket already this year. Is the leading run scorer too. If he doesn't open in the first test then something is very very wrong.

The standard in Division 1 is excellent. Most sides have quality seamers up to and including first change with some sides having more than that; some of them are genuinely quick, and a handful are knocking on England's door. There isn't that much quality spin around though; Monty's by far the best of those who play regularly but there are some good young prospects coming through - Danny Briggs, Scott Borthwick, George Dockrell. There are some strong batting lineups and most sides bat a long way down these days, particularly my team Warwickshire who won the Championship last season, but to be honest the batting isn't as strong as the bowling and the averages tend to be dominated by ex-Test players (Trescothick and Ramprakash in recent years) or overseas players. A first class career batting average in the mid 30s seems to be acceptable for a county pro these days, with 40 being good and 45+ outstanding.

Division 2 is lower quality, there's no question about that. Generally speaking sides don't bat so far down, and don't have the same strength in depth in their bowling attacks. There are still some good players about in Div 2 though and, if anything, the cricket can be more intense as the desire to get promotion is keenly felt. Most pros (rightly) believe their chances of international recognition are better if they're at a Division 1 side.

...

Thanks for the write up. Interesting in that both the English and AU scenes have batsmen whose averages have dropped dramatically from what used to be around the 50 mark before they would be considered for selection.

I'm assuming both Rogers and Cowan are in D1.

I notice Katich is also making runs over there. What div is he playing in?

Lancashire are in second division.

peternorth, he was told what to say, it's the usual PR stuff. Clarke would do us all a favour by not talking about Warner's 'leadership qualities' at this time. It makes Clarke sound unrealistic at best and deranged at worst.

CA probably want him to.

They still want Warner as next test captain.

I would do anything to have a baggy green, the fact that this bloke takes it for granted makes me sick.

It's a spoilt kid thing.

He got it through his T20 debut and became an overnight sensation in Australian Cricket.
