Thanks for your witty replies, I am well aware of this but it simply isn't good enough and miss the days of playing in the World Group, this tie was a big chance...

It may have seemed like a good opportunity, but we have just 2 singles players in the top 150 in the world and 4 doubles players in the top 100.

Not sure we deserve to play David Cup.

I wasn't trying to be witty. It's just reality. If we can't beat a Belgian side missing one of their best players in the playoff then we really don't have the right to be calling anyone else in the region 'crappy'.

When you look at the quality of our players, we're not even really underperforming. If we'd made it into the World Group, everybody would have been hoping to draw us in the first round.

For a nation that has such a history in Davis Cup, this simply isn't good enough. And yeah, we can call other countries crappy since we smashed Taiwan and Japan this year in Zonals. With the way the system works, we'll get playoff ties which will be beyond our reach (ie. Chile a couple of years ago was practically impossible) but the ties that are within grasp, as in Belgium at home, our players should be stepping up and Ball and Luczak didn't do that this weekend.

While, your right, if you look at the rankings, we aren't that good at all and deserve where we are but just accepting this isn't on, it's a major setback in Australian tennis every year we don't qualify for the Davis Cup. That's why I am annoyed.

Plus, a pity for Lleyton, again injury sets him back when we were ina great position to win the tie. i know he wants another carck at the Davis Cup, very frustating for him.

It's time for Fitzgerald to be dumped as captain. And Woodbridge to be removed from whatever-the-hell role he's supposed to be performing. (I'm guessing he wasn't expecting the remark to be picked up by ch7 - but I've rarely heard a comment in professional sport as patronising as the one he made to Hanley after the doubles on Saturday.)

It's just not good enough having guys like that at the helm. We need to be more professional.

I'm out of the loop what did he say? Paul Hanley is well ranked in doubles and has done OK at DC hasn't he? I can't believe how terrible we are on the men's side. We really don't deserve to be in the world group, Hewitt is the whole team, and he isn't going to play for much longer anyway. Todd Woodbridge was basically rubbished on Four Corners earlier in the year for a reason.

I'm also really disappointed in Ball, I honestly thought he'd be good some day, but it doesn't really look like it at the minute. Unless a miricle happens and Tomic turns out to be good we will be in the wilderness for years to come. This sucks.

Not sure of the exact words, but it was something like:

"Well done; that's about the best you could possibly play."

(Hanley looked suitably miffed.)

Now I'm guessing he didn't mean it to come out like that, and was trying to say something more along the lines of "I've never seen you play that well" (which still probably wouldn't have been perfect). But, then again, considering how pleased with himself Woodbridge often seems to be to me, I wouldn't bet against it that it's exactly what he meant to say.

Oh come on, that's not patronising. It was a very straightforward and dominant straight sets win, I'm sure what Woodbridge meant was that it was an ideal result / textbook demolition.

This is why Tomic should have been picked. If we are going to get flogged, get some experience into Tomic.

Seriously Ball makes the Gooch look like Nadal FFS!
cant understand why he wasnt picked to play, we cant just rely on hewitt to do the job for us all the time and hope that battlers like pete and carsten will come good on the day, they wont get any better imo, ball should be killing it at this level with his serve and groundstrokes, he is just woefully inconsistent, pete tries hard but in the big moments he very rarely rises to the occassion which is what top players do. Tomic has been playing on the tour now for a good year and a half, the only way we will find out if he will be any good is to give him a crack, he's going to have to sooner or later anyway so why not in an important DC tie. We need to play promising young players over has beens or never was's otherwise we are going nowhere fast.

Wouldn't say Tomic has been playing on the tour for a year and a half, he didn't play anything at all between Wimbledon and the US Open (apart from the Rosebowl), he played on clay for a couple of months getting his arse kicked and now his results so far in a couple of Asian challenegrs have been quite poor. Tomic really couldn't justify a spot over Ball or Luczak, no way in hell.

I hate the view of trying to blood young players just because they are young, you pick your best players who will give you the most chance to win. Sadly, Ball and Luczak are the best we have. Luczak hasn't had a great year but still whips Tomic's arse any day of the week. Ball is just wildly incosisent but with his results compared to everyone, he was the right choice although not sure I would of picked him ahead of Luczak but anyway. It was disappointing and frustating they didn't pick up the slack this weekend but no way should Tomic be picked ahead, the guy needs to have some results first.

Tomic has a WC into the ATP 250 event at KL, watch him get smashed, he lost to Udomchoke in the first round of challenger 6-4, 6-2.

By the way, Lleyton has to have hand surgery and will be out for around 3 weeks. That should rule him out for the Asian swing, even if he's right by Shanghai, I doubt he'll bother.

Just watched a fabulous 5 set match in the doubles of the davis cup final. French came from 2 sets down to take the match and the crucial 2-1 lead in the tie.

Djokovic plays first up on sunday, so you would have to think the Serbs will level at 2-2. Leaves a final match of Tisparevic v Llodra (most likely).

Surely Troicki to replace Tipsarovic?

Would think so, heard Tipsy was very nervous in his match. Should come down to an exciting 5th rubber. What an end of the year for Llodra if he managed to win the tie for France.

From what I can gather Tipsy shat his dacks against Monfils. I was surprised when I heard the result because he's quite a solid player, and to lose rather comfortably at home is pretty disappointing.

Novak will come out tomorrow and get the crowd fired up.

I can just inmagine the way Novak will be acting tonight, not that I can blame him I just don't feel like watching it.

Troicki and Djokovic get the job done and we win our first Davis Cup.:thumbsu:

What a result for Serbia. They're a country with only about 4 million people and to have so many decent tennis players is a feat in itself. We should see what they're doing over there. One of their greatest sporting moments apparently.

Congrats to Serbia. I can see Troicki gaining a lot of confidence out of this and going on a bit of a run in 2011, much like Verdasco did in 2009 after his victory in the 2008 Davis Cup Final. Another great achievement for Djokovic to add to his career too.
