I haven't seen anyone step up and challenge Harley Reid from open draft. If it's between Harley and Walter (knowing Walter will get matched by Gold Coast regardless of where the bid came) West Coast is likely to go with Harley.

Last pick 1 for West Coast was Michael Gardiner in 1996. They might be keen to get the pick 1 press this time around.
Whilst I am happy to take Reid I think it's fair to say that McKercher could not have done anything more and elevated his stocks during the Championships. Whether physical attributes or playing style affect his chances of going no. 1, I'm not sure, but he has been the best player in the last 5-6 weeks.

I think if wce think Walter is the best player they should bid.
an 18 year old kid should not dictate whether they are nominated pick 1 or not.
nor should his agent!
Cough cough Nor should an 18 year old kid dictate that they are not going to leave Victoria, Perkins sound familiar?

Nah just let them go for 2 years and then dog the club that invested in them and bring them home? Reckon what Perkins did is 10x better than Bruhn and Henry.

McKercher could be #2 after Walter.

Can't believe the Pies wanted to make Henry drive an extra 30 minutes, absolute brutes and I'm glad Geelong got him home.

Davo-27 would you be able to do a July Top 40?

Alright without taking anything away from Lou Richards, Barry Cable and Libba sortve... Can we stick the AFL era please?

I’ll take one (possibly two) as successful out of those.

I’ll give you Brent Harvey from that group.

Anyway I’ll get to my point… there’s no way I’m spending a one of the highest currency assets in our game which is a top 5 draft pick on a small forward at 170cm tall…
I’m not trying to knock Nick Watson at all…but small forwards are role players and that role is unbelievably hard to play unless the team you are in are getting good I-50 numbers and have quality key forwards to play off.

Eddie Betts, Steven Milne, Phil Matera are the only three that I can think of that carved out solid careers as great small forwards. (Charlie Cameron can get close to these three). But i don’t believe any of those three bought their respective clubs ultimate success…which is what you’d want a top 5 draft pick to ultimately do.

Yep agreed. The average height is much different now to 20 years ago. The rest of those players mentioned are average to slightly above average. Those bottom 3 clubs won't pick Watson. His athleticism looks elite however. There is a risk though if you match up a quick small defender on him though who is 10cm taller he will struggle. I would like to see him play in the VFL this year to see how he goes but we know he won't be doing that.

Cyril Rioli and ultimate success?

Cyril had to be around 180cm not 170cm!
I thought you moved the goalposts to great small forwards and ultimate success...Cyril certainly meets those requirements. You mentioned Charlie Cameron did you not, he's certainly taller than 175cm.

Anyhow over and out I'm sure Davo doesn't want his thread sidetracked in this back and forth.

Point was made about players below 175cm…not taller.

I think it’s going to become a very important conversation for top 10 teams considering using their first round pick on Nick Watson…
