Draft Expert Davo-27's 2023 Draft Thread

Jed Walter (GCS A) originally from WA where he loved his footy and the WCE, moved as a youngster to the Gold Coast and looked a good prospect last year, seems a focused and determined young lad and could find himself going in the first round if he follows up this year with another good year.

Same as Bradley Scheer.

(2024 draft) Went back over my notes of the u16s, these are the players from each of the teams I liked, SA were the dominant team and look like having a lot of 1st rounders(especially their top 5, Draper, Welsh, L.Camporeale, Barrett and Hargrave), VM the 2nd best team, also looking strong with a few missing to injury, WA looking a bit weak and VC looking terrible(lacking depth), but also having a player I think might go pick 1?, I won't add Dyson Sharp for 2025 and Will McCabe + Xavier Walsh for 2023 drafts

SA: Sid Draper, Tyler Welsh(Adel FS), Lucas Camporeale (Carl FS), Benny Barrett, Phoenix Hargrave, Jacob Newton, Ben Camporeale(Carl FS), Ned Atkinson, Charlie West, Louis Montgomery(Port FS), Sam Burbridge, Beau Ryan, Kade Herbert, Harry Dodd

VM: Josh Smillie, Jagga Smith, Levi Ashcroft(Bris FS), Lucas McInerney, Ty Kitchell, Damon Hollow, Luke Wilson, Zak Johnson, Isaac Kako, Sam Fanning, Jayden Nguyen, Luke Trainor, Tadgh McCarthy, Lucas Grego, Patrick Said, Roman Black

WA: Deian Roberts, Otis Harvey, Hugh Boxshall, Chayse Martinson, Harry Jones, Trent Hiscox, Thomas Cathcart, Malakai Champion, Austin Van Der Struyf, Jaxon Douglas

VC: Finn O'Sullivan, Oliver Warburton, Sam Lalor, Xavier Ivisic, Angus Morrison, Zac McInness, Tobie Travaglia, Jack Ough, Xavier Lindsay, Jasper Alger

Best to Worst from the u16s imo.

This is a 2023 draft thread. But it would be remiss of me not to tip Finn O’Sullivan as the #1 pick in 2024.

I’m at peace now and we can all now keep this as a 2023 draft thread 😁

Funny story, I said he was my favourite for pick 1 in the 2024 thread last year and a week later he wins the MVP for best player at the u16s which was a quick validation lol, good effort for a player in a team that lost all their games.

Davo when does Shaun Burgoyne son enter the under 16’s age bracket watch. Even though he will go to Port Adelaide now and not Hawthorn .

Apparently Ky Burgoyne and Charlie Crawford are in 2024 draft pool, so I guess we get an update on their progress this year?

Northern Knights V GWS A

players I liked the look of:

Northern
GOOD
Zak Johnson - player I liked from the u16s, stepped up and played well in the contest and is a beautiful kick
Jesse Dattoli - playing the medium forward role, competitive in the air and looks dangerous
Tsitis - had a few quality long kicks and was a player I didn't know much about that has strengthened his draft stocks in my eyes
Jude Giorgievski - quick outside player, got involved when he came on and gave the midfield some movement
Will Green - has a strong presence in the ruck, looking confident in his play after an interview on the afl site
Lucas McInerney - showed some run and good use of the ball out of the backline
POTENTIAL
D'Arro - slim agile defender, looks to have decent composure and moves well on field
Naish - had a decent game, tallish mid/flanker
Ferronato - was under the packs all game, tough inside mid
DISAPPOINTED
Ty Kitchell - don't know if it was the role as forw or what it was, but he did not play well

GWS A
GOOD
Harvey Thomas - skilful midfielder, deft little kicks, knows how to get rid of the footy under pressure, clever mid, probably BOG
Payne - strong up forw, built like De Goey, competitive and pushed up the ground, an interesting prospect
POTENTIAL
Glanvill - nice use of the footy in a team that was more about grunt than skill
Gauci - nice use of the footy

Sand V Eastern

players I liked the look of

Sandringham:
GOOD
Johnston - a player that has raised his draft stocks in my eyes, captain and BOG, kicked a couple lovely goals from midfield
Levi Ashcroft - fantastic forw and decent midfielder, kicked a beautiful goal from the boundary, could have kicked 3 but had 1 controversially touched on the line
Will Brown - had some crisp moments, not sure on disposal numbers, but he looked good in bursts
Archie Roberts - added run and carry and put in a good effort
#2 - didn't get his name, but he showed some quality as well
POTENTIAL
Ned Maginness - had an OK game and looks to be a draft chance, although later in the draft, good endurance, ok disposal, potential
Ryley Sanders - once again an OK game but nothing special, yet to wow me at Sandringham
Trainor - competes well in the air and tends to win the loose ball for his team
Enders - didn't win much of it, but looks like a good kick at goal

Eastern:
GOOD
Josh Smillie - another of the u16s to play at a high standard, stepping up to the level straight away, a bit slow which afl clubs aren't keen on but a high footy IQ
Nick Watson - was electric in the midfield in stints and also kicked a couple of goals up forw, dual roles might be the go this year for Watson
Riley Weatherill - had a hot patch in the 3rd quarter where he kicked 3 goals all from outside 50m I think?, kept Eastern in it and I thought they could pull off an upset
Caleb Windsor - quick outside player that plays with real passion, isn't afraid of a contest
Madia - KPD who looked fantastic for Eastern, looking forward to see more
POTENTIAL
Clay Tucker - looks like a few modern AFL rucks going around, tall, strong, good in the ruck and around the ground, potential
Aldous - tallish strong player who influenced the game in 2nd half
DISAPPOINTING
Nyko - never really got into the game it seemed

Nyko was the top possession winner on the ground with 28
He takes a lot of kick outs. I'm not sure what to make of him yet. His kicking is hit n miss. He looks comfortable down back but i wouldn't call him damaging.

Nick Watson - was electric in the midfield in stints and also kicked a couple of goals up forw, dual roles might be the go this year for Watson

That's been his role at Caulfield for a couple of years and he's frankly been one of the most damaging underage players the APS has seen doing it.

I think it will transition to AFL level as well.

It really has nothing to do with height and body size, it's purely his speed and agility, which definitely translates to AFL level.

I think everyone will watch closely when he plays for Box Hill

Western V Sydney

players I like the look of

Western:
GOOD
Logan Morris - kicked 4 goals and took a fair few Contested marks in the forw50 as well as a few good leads around the ground
Lucca Grego - another 1 from the u16s champs, composed, good user of the footy
POTENTIAL
Jovan Petric - overager going around again, gives them a hard-working chf, might try for the msd
Kovacevic - I thought he played well as a big bodied mid, tagging and also used it well
McArthur - showed some glimpse of potential as a medium forw
DISAPPOINTING
Tsia - has some speed, just doesn't get involved enough
Moloney - kick ins and a couple good plays, was hoping for more from him

Sydney A:
GOOD
Owen Turner - had a good game on the outside, got involved in a few contests, good speed, good use of the footy and kicked a couple goals
POTENTIAL
Gender - competitive tallish forw, was good last year and again this year, kicked 3 and got involved in the come back
James Lugsdin - played on the outside and did ok
Indhi Kirk - got plenty of it in the first half, but dropped off in the 2nd half
DISAPPOINTING
Cleary - he tried hard as an inside mid but nothing seemed to go his way until the last 10 mins where he started to play ok

Pickett is 171cm and Watson 169cm at last years measurements, likely taller now. No reason his size will mean he won’t be a top 5-10 pick as some believe.
