Koltyn was one of the guys I was hoping to watch the most this year so hopefully your right and he turns it on at 18’s level.

I still think people are underestimating Sanders and finding reasons to rate lower than look at some of the stuff he does well. I thought he used the ball well on the weekend.
Respect your view however and keep up the good work 👍🏻
Part of me wonders with Tholstrup whether he gets a double knock by recruiters because of question marks over his preseason (noting he had the difficult task of driving there and back from Esperance, but why was he playing bush league?) and then they add his current performances and get Three?

I just saw an article saying suns can only match two academy bids in the top 20? Who do you think they let slide ?

Main point from that article:

It’s prompted recruiters to revisit an AFL draft rule that could leave the Suns with a tough conundrum come the end of the year. As first flagged by The Age on Wednesday, AFL rules state a club can’t match more than two bids on academy prospects in the top 20 of a draft if, in that same year, it makes the finals and is eliminated prior to preliminary final weekend. A club, too, is restricted to matching one first-round academy bid if it’s among the last four teams remaining in the finals.

The rule was introduced during the mid to late 2010s when the Giants were constant finals features and gained access to an array of top prospects from their own academy, such as Jacob Hopper, Matthew Kennedy, Harry Himmelberg, Will Setterfield, Harry Perryman and Isaac Cumming. So should the Suns make this year’s finals series, they could be faced with a tough call to ignore one of their academy stars.

Does the rule include father sons, or a combination of father sons and academy prospects.

Asking for a team next year.

Hi everyone we are spamming Davos thread again this is ti discuss his draft rankings. I just created a thread called

Academy and FS rules and potential changes

To have general discussion about the rules add new ones we find out given it’s mostly in secret and seemingly made up as the AFL go along and discuss what we would do to improve the system. Hope to see you there. Sorry I’m not that savvy with how the site works so wasn’t sure how to provide a direct link. Hope to see you there it’s a really interesting discussion.

Davo, what do you see Tholstrup projecting as at AFL seniors level? I look at his game (albeit based on a small sample size) and can’t see him making it as a forward, just doesn’t seem to have the requisite speed, height or tricks.

Do you think he could have scope as a big bodied midfielder? I recall a bloke called Fyfe played as a half forward for WA at under 18s and made that transition quite well.

He can play 2 roles really well from what I have seen over the years, strong marking forward and accumulator midfielder, he does win a lot of ball in midfield but has played mostly forward recently, he looked OK in the AFL Academy series, but I'm hoping to see a more dynamic performance from him more like previous years, at AFL level he would start as a forward likely playing that extra midfielder hff position and rotate through midfield as he develops a tank, being a dual position type forw/mid

I have him pretty high in my rankings mostly based on past performances, but if he doesn't perform to expectations then i might have to drop him down the list as others show more in their draft year, he was one of WAs best last year and a stand out talent, so I'm expecting him to perform at a high standard.

Davo, assuming Blues get a pick in the vicinity of 7-12 (once FA compo and academies are done) who do you think we could look at in this range?

I'm not sure what Carlton is after in this draft pool, but here's a top 40 I did recently(also Carlton usually go rogue and do their own thing, except with Walsh and Hollands), I think it's likely there's 2 bids in the top 10 for Gold Coast, but other than that you have Harley Reid one of the better utilities in recent years going at 1, pretty much a lock, then you have McKercher(Merrett like mid), Curtin(good build, interceptor, KPD), Watson(speedy and mercurial sml forw/hbf), Caddy(high flying forw, longish arms, likely 193cm kpf), Wilson(wing/forw, goal sense), Delean(star qualities forw/mid), Edwards(contested marking 207cm ruck, highish disposal game), Duursma (good goal sense, good size, beautiful movement, more of a forw, but learning mid).....

Gee thats tough question atm ... and I would think it would depend also if WC trades the #1 pick. If so they would target the WA player one would think...if available. I feel for you guys trying to do phantoms this early. Who is taken before Carlton cause at that pick you probably stil take who you think is best. They could probably do with a small goal kicking forward and a running Merritt like mid but who knows. Id struggle to pick who Geelong would take ... and what pick they will have? Whats Duursmas running like .. we love mids with running power.. anyway good luck to you guys picking it for all the teams this year.

I think Carlton wants to continue to add run and spread to the outside of a one paced midfield. This is why hollands and binns were drafted last year.

Possibly a half forward who can also go into the middle would suit.

Out of Watson, Wilson and Duursma who has the better work rate and endurance?

Who has the better contested game for short stints in the midfield?

I think Watson might go earlier than 7, I have him going 5 or 6 clubs may have him higher?, Darcy Wilson and Zane Duursma would both fill that role well imo

Yea Gold Coast have a good few years coming up

2023 - Jake Rogers, Jed Walter and Ethan Read
2024 - Caleb Nancarrow and Leonardo Lombard
2025 - Zeke Uwland and Jai Murray (there's a couple others who are getting opportunity young, that I have not seen as much yet)

Their Academy is rich with draftable talent atm, take note of this talent, this year they might even have 3 first rounders, next year they have 2 more who could go top 30 and Uwland looks likely top 30 as well, not as sure on Murray yet, but he has shown a bit in a couple games, but has had some quiet games, he has some talent though, so we'll see how he develops...

Wonder what players will need to be let go to fit them in?

What others will look elsewhere for opportunity?
