Toast Dawes and Cloke Together...

I was very impressed, he has shown the potential to stay in the side over quite a few people and I think the Dawes/Cloke tandem could be anything if they keep there confidance up. For once we actually have a bit of depth up forward. I was a bit skeptical on Dawes, I guess I had all my eggs in the Rusling basket but I am very pleased to see how he played yesterday.

The question I have is, what happens if Jack finds his feet again, if Rusling is fit and firing and playing as a forward in the VFL kicking bags of goals, Dick is coming back soon and same with Wood who alot of people think may knock Fraser out of the side. I'd hate to be the selection commity lol.

Got to say, as a serial Dawes basher, I was pretty impressed by his game. He hasn't won me over yet, but my problem with him was his deficiencies and that they were glaring if you were to be developed into a key forward.

However yesterday although monstering a young defence, he showed he had improved his ability to get his hands out in front, and that he would look to make a hard contest and bring the footy to ground level.

But let's not go overboard yet, Dawes has set a standard now, and he needs to improve on it further.

Yesterday's performance of 2 goal and several strong contests needs to be his level of impact on a mediocre day. That saying I am happy for Jack to sit his arse in the 2's and to keep playing Dawes in the 1's because on yesterday's effort he has a lot more presence deep than Jack.

He'll be tested next week as Jamison is a pretty good defender, but yesterday was a tick for me, and it's also exciting for the football club because if he can keep improving on that effort, then he really fills that hole that we needed filling. But make sure you keep those hands up in front of your eyes big fella.

Dawes was good, and most importantly, our structure was much better with his inclusion. Dawes clunked at least two strong marks in the last quarter, which was encouraging. Before that he got two hands to a few attempts but spilt them. The great thing was even when he didn't take the mark, he stayed on his feet and stayed in the contest. His running, both defensive and offensive, was great and took a lot of pressure off Cloke.

It was notable how many contests Dawes reached. He has a big motor for someone his size. Certainly makes our forward line look much more mobile than the combo of the Anvil and Josh.

Hopefully we play two genuine KFs for the rest of the year, and don't revert to cobbling together a forward line out of Trav, a second ruck, and a jack-of-no-trades like Leigh Brown.

He's the right body shape to play with Cloke. In 2008 when he came in he was just getting in Cloke's way by running into his spots, yesterday encouragingly, no signs of that.

Agree he needs to keep it up and Not Drop Off. He started off on Pears and did a good job on Him. Jamison(if he goes to him) will be a interesting Test as he more an Athletic Defender then a Big Strong Defender.

I agree needs to keep the Hands In Front and don't wait for the Ball but Playing AFL will really show him that he can't do that very often

It allowed Cloke to run all the way into the centre square at times and contest the loose ball which he did a fantastic job of. You always hear the commentators talking about getting the first few touches, and our structure yesterday meant he got those quite quickly.

TBH, I can even see TC, JA and CD all playing together but with JA pinch-hitting from the bench. It would create a pretty bit struggle for opposition match-ups, especially with Daisy, Dids and Medders running riot in the 50m arc.

Anyone else think Dawes should model himself after Barry Hall? Watching Dogs games I think the way Hall plays would suit Dawes to a tee.

Well maybe with out the Brain Snaps. Well Hall game style could suit Dawes

Our accuracy in front of goal had nothing to do with Dawes.
Yes it did. Tell me the last time Travis has been able to play that close to goal?

It is not about individuals but structure. With Cloke as the only tall in the forward line and playing a long way from goal, we lacked a tall focus in the goal square. Cloke simply looks a better player with Dawes playing in the forward line.
Agree completely.

So you want us to go back to the old set up, using an under-sized full forward in Anthony? There is still a spot for Anthony, one where he is not taking the best defender each week.
And again.

Pretty much.

Amen, brother.

Just as a point of interest, in Travis Cloke's 11th AFL game, he had 8 disposals, 3 marks and no goals. Just in case you think that's an aberration, the week before he had 9 disposals (3 marks, 1 goal), and the week after he had 1 disposal (1 mark, no goals).

Lloyd? Would love it if Cloke could get some advice from the set shots master.

Yeah, that's what i was wondering, after Lloyd virtually asked for the gig last weekend, then this week Trav is tossing grass in the air and generally looked much more confident kicking for goal.

Sherriff, it may be that we could see JA, plus Trav plus Dawes all in the 22, but likely Josh would need to step out, to keep our speed factor up.

Note Carlton's speed is ripping Cats today.

And that's a bad thing? :D

LOL, no.

Whilst Josh was very good yesterday, think his days are numbered really.

Besides last years Anzac Day to motivate him, Wood's apparent rise and seeing other guys like Lockyer and O'Bree out, well he had plenty of motivation yesterday didn't he.

Having said that, barring injury, he'll likely play most games this year.
