We've lost games with too many players going at the ball/man at the same tim. Not everyone should be laying the tackle or retrieving the ball all the time, everytime.

On a number of occasions, he was the only magpie at the contest, c'mon! are you his mum or what?

No offense but I certainly value a few other opinions ahead of yours.
And you have been posting where lately?
I did see most of the game and at no time did I see Dawes being "flogged" at any time.
I am looking for someone to hint at a part of the game in which he(Dawes) did something extremely soft to warrant you opinions.....

Must have been a good bucks do then? No strippers?

If people are trying to say he didn't seemingly lack intensity today, you are kidding yourselves. I'm not saying he is soft, because i don't think he is, he goes in hard enough for me. But he got beaten in a lot of contests, and he didn't follow it up and apply pressure.
I understand he's a young player, only a few games in, but he still has to do better then that in games to come. I definitely agree he's helpful in our side though, Cloke has kicked 9 goals in two weeks, can't complain with that.

Agree with that. A few times he tried but his Defensive Pressure needs work.

Those it takes a season or 2 for a Big Man tom get over a Knee Reco.

I still thought he had a Descent game and Showed that he is worth putting time into.

Just needs a Big Pre-Season, You just have to look what a Big Pre-Season can by looking at N Brown

This is "bucks night III" a bit like "The Return of the Phantom Menace" if you know what I mean?

Lots of drinks, footy and food.....very, very few ladies (except those serving the above).:D

Gee rough assessment in the OP.

I was saying to my dad he is going to be one of those tall forwards that stay in the game because he is willing to work and get his knees dirty.

Don't know if the first poster was at the game but he battled hard at ground level I thought.

Unfortunenly his game didn't warrant him a spot for next week.

The 2nd efforts were rather disappointing.

Needs to ditch the long sleeve too.

Out: Dawes
In: Rocca

I thought he Had some good 2nd Efforts not every single time but had a Few.

But yeah if Rocca is Fit bring him in

When is Rocca ever fit after missing a couple of months of football? Dawes isn't going to be dropped for Pebs this week to go and play in Perth, don't be ridiculous.

When he drops a mark or the ball hits the ground he doesn't attack it but I wouldn't question his attack on the ball. Last week he showed how great he is in keeping his feet and getting the ball off the deck. In fact his ability to get the ball off the deck is one of his strengths.

He just needs to adjust to the pace of AFL football. In the VFL defenders aren't that bold to try to beat their opponent to the footy so you have time to watch the ball a bit more.

I am not Knocking him. Just Needs a Bit of Time and Big Pre-Season.

He will be a Rising Star Next Year:thumbsu:

Chris Dawes (and JA to a lesser extent) is the best thing that has happened to Travis Cloke.

Without Reid, Rusling and Rocca Cloke has had to battle almost single-handedly against 2 or 3 opponents regularly as he has been our only focal point up forward for the majority of the season.

Also, I have been saying all along that Cloke needs to be played closer to goal and should only sparingly move further up the ground on long searching leads. His contested marking is as good as anyone's and in recent weeks we have seen his true value and being able to contribute with healthy bags of goals. That's the sort of output we need from Cloke. Dawes' inclusion has allowed Cloke to spend more time inside the F50-where he can be at his most damaging.

Very Good Point - I saw Dawes play Further up the Ground and Even at time in Defense at times. That helps because he takes a Defender with him and Away from Cloke

Nothing wrong with the Beast, just not fit enough for the rigours of AFL Football.

He's had to do a lot more running in the 1's, he presents, gives a contest everytime what more do you want?

He's played 3 games FFS! He's just a kid! (maybe I should remember that when I have a go at Toovey :D)

It seems to me that the Dawes knockers here are the armchair experts that watch the game on TV.
How about going to the Game boys.
He was not among the best players last night, but he was not as bad as you clowns suggest. I saw him go hard at lots of contests, and at some he did look a little bit slack and lost. He is not a pussy as some suggest. he is probably not as fit as some others. Needs a big Pre Season.
However, if anyone of you guys had any brains you would have noticed that his inclusion has added a proper structure into our forward line.
Travis has been freed up and is playing better.
Even if Dawes does not mark when the ball is kicked to him, he does provide the contest as does JA.
A lot of the contests have ended up in crumbing goals.
Obviously a fit Rocca will be in the side ahead of Dawes.
As I said earlier, even if the kid is not kicking Goals he is playing his part.
I think some of you guys should ask Mick Malthouse what he thinks of Dawes' game and he will tell you that he has been OK.
He is playing his role.
As long as the team is playing well and winning that is what matters.

Ok... I get the general feeling everyone really like Dawes (me too), but the fact everyone keeps avoiding to is we are about to play finals football. Saying he is inexperienced, still building confidence aftera knee reco are all valid points but the simple fact of the matter is he did not dominate many of his contests last night and at times did not chase or throw his body on the line when he should have (2nd half) and at this stage of the season we need that from a player playing in his current role.

A finals campaign is not the time to be focasing a getting a player ready for the coming years (that comes second) the number one priority is to give the team every chance to play off for a flag. If last night performance is anything to go by, I dont think he is ready for the rigours of finals football this year. I would like to see McCaffer get a shot next week.

Dawes will be a force in years to come, but I dont think he's shown he can handle finals footy and will have little or no hope of imposing himself on a game.

I know alot of you will attack me for my opinion, but please dont forget his last half last night, he looked spent and did not attack the ball and opposition anywhere near as much as he did in the first half... we need 4 quarters of footy in finals.

Says in the paper today that Caff hurt his back yesterday.

With basically every tall forward injured seems like we haven't got a choice.

Geez thats a shame. I thought elevating the kid last week and playing him in the last H & A game might of been the plan, doubt he'll debut in finals, but you never know.

Ok, its settled then, bring Didak back!

Yeah if we must!

It'd be unfair on H. Shaw if we brought Didak back it.

So I guess we have to play both of them! :D

Dawes played a funny game last night. I want to see the replay before I make too many comments however I tend to agree with the statement that he is probably lacking the fitness for the intencity of seniors football. Finals football is even more intence however I can't see him being dropped for the rest of the year.

His presence alone along with JA has revolutionised how our forward 50 functions and we seem much more dangerous now. Cloke is playing closer to goal whilst Dawes has been going on some long searching leads. At times last night he was even in defence.

So we are a better side with Dawes playing, and Dawes too will be getting better with the experience. He knows what is expected and can set himself up over the preseason for a massive 2009.
