i think onley 1 of them can play in our 22 who would u choose? me dawes his strong tough breaks packs open eveything anthony cant do . i think for anthony to get back in our team he needs to kick another 5 next week in the vfl

I don't see it as Anthony v Dawes. One of the best attributes of Dawes atm is that he can play the modern CHF game i.e. like an oversized midfielder. This gives Cloke a breather and spreads the work load. For his size he has great mobility. The remarks about him being slow are ridiculous. He is certainly quicker than JA is anyway.

Sure, his overhead marking is a weakness, although in modern football that is not so much of a problem. If a player was dependent on getting kicks in today's game by taking contested overhead marks, he wouldn't be getting a game. If kicking for goal has stagnated, then contested marking over the last 30 years has gone backwards. Very few players in the game take consistent contested overhead marks, particularly inside 50.

I would like to see JA in the side, but in the backline to replace either Brown or Reid who are really struggling. I don't think JA is a KF, but I think he could be a really good player in the backline where we could use his kicking skills to great effect.

To those who still call for Rusling, do you also believe in Father Christmas and the Easter Bunny?????????

Rusling instead of Dick? You're dreaming. Dick is best 22 and ahead of Rusling by a fair margin. He'll have 1-2 games in the VFL to get his fitness and touch back then Dick will slot straight back into the seniors.

Dawes at the moment is looking good, but Anthony was still able to kick 50 goals last season playing on the best defenders every week, and bar Medhurst no other player has been able to achieve this, which is a huge achievement in itself.

Anthony is far superior at crashing packs and bringing the ball down than Dawes, yes Dawes may be a wopping 1cm taller than Anthony, and some substantial kilos heavier, but he doesn't crash any packs, and besides yesterday I've never really seen him use his strength to its fullest capacity. Anthony applies more defensive pressure, than Cloke, and especially Dawes. Anthony is a better kick for goal, and is superior overhead mark. Anthony also attracts the best tall defender, leaving Cloke with the lesser tall defender.

In contrast, Dawes has a better tank and endurance, which allows him to get more ball moving up the ground. Dawes is also generally a good set shot for goal, and has reasonable skills for a big man. Dawes has more strength currently than Anthony, but he will need to keep using it like he did against the Blues. Dawes major weakness is his overhead marking, and the better defenders are able to spoil chest marks much easier than when their opponent takes the ball out in front.

At their best Anthony would be ahead, and if he puts on another 5 kilos or more, he could become a great FF, however currently he is not at his best, due to injuries, and other issues, and needs at least another week in the VFL to get some run into him, and hence Dawes keeps his spot as he rightly deserves.

I'm happy for either of these guys playing, just so long as I never see L.Brown playing in the seniors again.

Dawes has never been clearly out marked JA has, Dawes always brings the ball to ground in marking contests. He has a problem at times taking the mark he should above his head, but as far as 'contesting' (hitting a pack/sitting under the bomb and bringing it to ground) he has no issues.


Last year myself and others called for JA to be the 3rd tall as his attributes and play suits it low possesion getting dead eye dick that will beat most HBF/BP.

His only issue is he can lead into the other forwards space and can lend to clogging it up, but if he worked with them instead of against them he could have a great season as the 3rd option.

Then the Dawes vs JA debate comes into it, without the resting ruckmen forward i believe they both can fit in the 22.

Can we rotate the 3 mids off the bench instead of 4?

Ease up, mdc, he played predominately on Fletcher on ANZAC Day and wasn't disgraced. Granted he scored his goals on Hurley, but he still presented and threw himself into packs when it was his turn in the first half.

Yeah mdc, ease up biatch. He took a few in the dukages and seemed to get free a bit so definitely on the improve in that dept. Also more tackles, but I'd like to see him model his defensive pressure on La Traviata.

JA kicked 50 goals!!! last year how can people be so quick to rub him out and say dawes and rusling deserve it more?

sometimes people that support our club are the biggest bandwagoners that rate players on 2 games rather then there past 30

Not Saying JA is Terrible - Just saying Dawes is better suited to that Role and Helps Cloke out more than JA Does

I have liked the look of the structure the last two weeks, only time will tell if it's durable against quality. I also think sr36 and Loki made excellent cases for 3 talls.

And I don't think anyone is calling for Anthony to be ditched, so no need for histrionics. I wouldn't mind seeing him tried in the backline.

Fwiw, I agree that Dawes helps structurally much more than Anthony or Cloke - but that's got to do with where he leads as opposed to how he crashes packs. I mean, the way Calrton or Essendon play, I'm not even sure they had a single pack form over 2 weeks.

And whilst you or TRS might not be calling for Anthony to be ditched, plenty are. Or at least shovelled down back.

I was arguing that Dawes is NOT worse at contesting the ball then JA, it wasn't an attack at JA but the fact Dawes hasn't let his opponent out mark him.

Rutten, Lake, Scarlett types have out bodied JA at times to mark uncontested.

Dawes has played now on Rutten, Hurley, Pears, Fletcher, White, Henderson, Hughton and has not been out muscled and brings the ball down or forces the spoil from the defender.

I am not having a go at JA and would like to see him play alongside Dawes, Rusling I am a fan of but I highly doubt he will ever get a run of being not injured.

Dawes has been also double teamed (some times he was triple teamed) and often had to sit under bombs against Essendon and made it very hard on him but the ball was still brought to ground.

JA did his best work as a lead up forward and was extremely accurate from limited possesions.

I didn't say we should ditch him and im not sure anyone has suggested that, as I said I'd like to see him work with Dawes and Cloke.

JA would provide much more as a 3rd target then Fraser up forward.

We played the anvil Cloke and anthony all last year and went all right, upgrade the anvil for Dawes and with cloke finding some form, plus hopefully JA doesn't have to deal with the number1 defender every week and I think it will be a good set up.

I don't mind if Jack goes back in defence to see how it all looks and works. Would love to see some 60 metre passes from just outside the defensive 50 to the edge of our forward 50. Won't hurt to try it out.

If doesn't work, then I guess we just have a tussle of big men b/w Cloke, Dawes, Jack and Rusler.

It will make a huge difference. We dominated the play against Essendon who continued to play one on one football even though we where dictating terms through the middle. There was a paddock for both Dawes and Cloke to lead into and the midfielders where regularly able to make passes under little to no pressure which meant hitting the fowards on the chest.

Against Carlton the stacked the midfield leaving a heap of space at both end for fowards to work into, which meant when the ball went foward clean it ended up in a scoring shot more often then not. Again leaving more space for fowards then is the norm.

So in a tougher game you will see the pressure increase and the space in front of fowards decrease. This means the delivery is likely to be higher and he won't have the luxury of taking the ball on the chest or unopposed.
