Dawes is 280K, so that sounds like about 250K for Martin.. is that fair value?

No one is saying that Martin is a better player than Dawes. Just that he's valuable and we shouldn't give him up for peanuts. Pick 20+Martin would be way over what Dawes is worth.

How about we trust the coaches decision, I didn't last year with clark and myself and many of others were made to look like a fool. Who honestly gives a hoot how much he gets payed, none of our players deserve to be on big contracts, Dawes is a true professional whatever coin he gets I'm sure he deserves it. Neeld knows Dawes a hell of a lot better than any one of us, we said we gave overs for clark we were wrong an it could be déjà vu with Dawes.

No you haven't because it's confirmed that at least 4 clubs have offered him 500K over the last 12 months setting the market and you simply wouldn't be in the race if you were offering less.. it's not like you have a premiership window to entice him with.. although I can see one in 3 years if he signs a 2nd contract with you I doubt he's looking that far ahead when weighing up options

He's just as likely to extract his digit with the weight of that kind of responsibility and money and take the next step and be a 500K player

Jamar's entire ruckwork game is built off wrestling players out of the contest and wining the tap, Stefan Martin doesn't have the body to do that but he has the height and leap, he'll be needed along side Gawn if these changes stick.

Even if that figure is correct there's a big difference between Dawes' value to Melbourne and his value to Collingwood. To Melbourne he's that 2nd big forward who will hopefully take the pressure off Clark and provide a balanced forward structure for the first time in many years. It's worth Melbourne's while to pay him enough that we remain his club of choice. To Collingwood he's a surplus player who they decided to replace with a second rate 28yo. Melbourne only need to pay Collingwood something commensurate with his worth to them. Pick 20 sounds about right to me.

That's not how it works, you are going to have to pay overs because he's contracted and as you pointed out far more important to you than us.. we've already got a flag out of him but he needed to be more of a forward/ruck than a pure forward for our setup because of Cloke

And don't diss the Q, his numbers are awesome, if he's got 2 years left in him we just got a bargain for nothing

Clearly I disagree with your first point, but I didn't intend to diss Lynch. I like him as a player. But there's no denying he's a second rate forward .. not in the same class as Franklin, the Riewoldts, Cloke, Pavlich etc. True he probably has 2 years left in him but Dawes has maybe 7 or 8 years left and yet you prefer Lynch. Dawes is clearly surplus to Collingwood's needs now so they can either trade him for the best available deal, which appears to be our pick 20, or be stuck with him playing in the reserves at, what did you say? $280k per year?

Funny how the Herald Sun is the only one reporting that.

Even if it were true (which I seriously doubt), we are paying almost the bare minimum the AFL allow so it wouldn't be that detrimental to our cap situation with front-loading, back-loading etc.

I don't know why it is so hard to believe. Gary Lyon has made public discourse that Melbourne offered Dawes a massive contract last trade season numerous times. It was also mentioned in The Age that he was offered plus $450 k plus.

Do you think Dawes is going to be receptive to such a move if the same people that offered him plus $450 k last year only think he's worth less than that now?

Garry Lyon tends to pump up the club more than it really needs to be. Like I said earlier I don't really have an issue with the money. I reckon most of our players get fairly average pay from an AFL standard, they can't really ask for much more after the performances they've put on. If we want to make a play for these types of players, frontload their contracts and then give our other players better contracts when they earn it, I'm happy for us to do that. We have to pay the full salary cap anyway.
