Pick 20 is a 1st rounder, that is a big layout for a player that was pretty ordinary last year, now the Dees did have some spare picks so why not go for it, but pick 20 is a fairly high price to pay for a key forward that averaged 12 disposals and .7 goals a game.

Still not sure what type of structure the Demons are building, for me you lacked the players to deliver it to the forwards this year not sure why there hasn't been more work in this area?
And it starts... How's your back line? Still hemorrhaging?

Viney, Barry and pick 4 (Wines?) plus Byrnes to rotate through the midfield...i would suggest that is a fair addition to the midfield so far and the club have stated they expect to still be active during the rest of the trade period...so having two big forwards was the next piece of the puzzle.

Viney and pick 4 will help and then next year we throw some cash at a marquee mid or two. All good.

Good get demons pretty happy with this we have a player who works his arse off and at the very least is going to create a contest every time the ball is near him, will definitely benefit those around him as well ....

Agree with this. And if he recaptures his kicking form and some confidence in marking, you'll have an excellent buy. By all accounts he's a very good bloke too. Hopefully a win win - I always liked Dawesy.

Congratulations to Melbourne.

All the best for Dawesy. Is a wonderful bloke and very underrated footballer. Sure, he may have his flaws but every footballer does. He has been canned from pillar to post all season. He will bounce back and then everyone will jump back on the bandwagon again.

He will be a good fit for the Dees.

You clearly don't have a clue about our list. We've recruited Viney and will most likely take another midfielder in the draft with 4. Barry will also be able to play in the midfield soon enough. Add to that the improvement of all our young players (like Trengove) and also Howe and possibly a few others (including Byrnes) rotating through the midfield and I think we'll be ok. As long as our backline holds up (would like to keep rivers, but can survive without him), and we're looking at an exciting future imo.

And pick 20 is well worth Dawes. A late first round pick is never any kind of guarantee. We've now got two monster forwards who can help protect and mentor our youngsters. Both also have a better attitude than Jack 'throw a tantrum and constantly scream at my teammates' Riewoldt.

I'd personally be more worried about the mental/playing strength of your team who was supposed to make the 8 this year. Miss it again and Hardwick is gone.

Dees fans need to be patient and really wait until 2014 to see some major changes, but come 2014/15....we're coming.

good luck Chris Dawes and congrats Dees. Whatever the arguments about the terms of the trade, you've picked up a good bloke who will work his backside off. Forgetting his marking woes, he does have excellent aerobic capacity and in 2010 was one of our better kicks for goal (not that Clokey was competition).

Sorry to see him go but it made sense for Dawes as he'll get more game time, it makes sense for the Dees as they get a mature bodied forward and it makes sense for us because we cash in on his value now.

Will miss the big fella.:( Good luck to him for the future. Nice to see you blokes up & about.
Good luck for 2013 gents.

Wow you guy's have really forked out big time, $$$$ and pick 20. If he can get back to 2010 form you'll be happy. He is just so frustrating the way he cant take a contested overhead mark, but, he was a great kick for goal at one stage, so you will definitely be wanting that back. Anyway good luck Chris.

The way the Clark trade went down from memory. Was that one of Neeld's assistants who had worked up at Brisbane rated him highly, we went up interviewed him secured him and turned him into one of the better kpf's in the comp. Both Brown and Neeld know Dawes, they know what he's capable of and his potential, I doubt this was a waste but as always time will tell.

I think it's a win win for both clubs. But this analysis is seriously flawed - think of all the great players that have been snapped up from picks 20 to say 40 over the past 10 years. Dayne Beams was picked up with pick 29 - just won Colingwood B&F and All Australian honours and Zaharakis from Essendon pick 23 won a B&F last year.

It's how you use the pick that counts

I agree, I currently rate dayne beams as the best player from his draft, on current form in any case. Lot of the best players have fallen through the cracks so I don't really mind it too much. Around 20 you'll get as many spuds as champions, I don't think we even have a recruiting manager yet, not since BP left, and I believe Neelds plan was always to trade some of these picks, partially for that reason.

We had one decent forward this year. Our midfield may be imbalanced but our forwardline was the biggest thing going wrong all year. We had to move two of our backmen and a couple of our midfielders there to compensate for it.

Welcome to the club big fella, not the greatest fan by any stretch of the imagination but my belief in this club is bigger than any petty differences.

All the best for 2013 and beyond ;)

Are we still getting the recruiting guy from Collingwood now that he can leave as his contract is up?

Haven't heard anything new on it but I assume so. When would his contract be up, after the trade period?
