Dawes was rated around where we took him. After his knee he was tipped to go very late/rookied. We decided to go with his rating without injury. Was never a top 10 pick.

I thought Dawe's overhead marking improved out of sight last year and don't really feel like spending another year defending him. How many overhead marks did he actually miss last night? Could someone please put together a set of lowlights from his game last night that prove he cannot take an overhead mark? If you can't, then stop maligning every Dawes' performance by criticising some aspect of his game. If you don't like what you see, go barrack for Carlton.

Cloke Dawes and Tarrent in forward line = wasted recruitment, Tarrant is far, FAR, FAR TOO versatile and dynamic to be wasted on the forward line where he is no longer suited since his recent self-conversion to a backman/wing

I agree, I think all three should be played in our forward line. We have enough height in our backline with N Brown and Reid ,along with H and Maxy.

I don't think Tarrant will play much in the forward line, but would love to see it.

I would have to agree that we drafted him earlier than he was expected to go. 'Experts' were surprised we jumped so early. Dawes was more likely to be drafted late, partly due the cloud hanging over his injured knee.

Dawes fits our structure perfectly,he can hold his body position in marking contests (something Jack Anthony couldn't do) and also has the run to play high which gives Cloke more opportunities to stay within 50m.
If only Anthony Rocca had Dawes' endurance....

Watching Jack Anthony (the traitor, as endorsed by Mick Malthouse) play for Freo, and thank god we have Dawes, who is made for physical, finals football, instead of Jack, who has never, and will ever use his body in a marking contest.

Dawes is only going to get better, as we have seen what Jack can offer (a 4-5 possession game with 2-3 goals max) against the best.

I'd take Dawes left toe ahead of Jack any day of the week.

Yeah, went a bit over the top, but you will never, ever hear me say a good word about Jack Anthony again, even MM put him in the "Nick Davis" category, which to me is the lowest of lows.

He is ultra "non physical" for a key forward, that's how I should have put it, he does use his body, just not well, and not often enough, especially compared to someone like Dawes.

I always though JA was a good overhead mark in pack situations but that was always without much direct body contact. On the lead and when the ball was dropped on his head he had safe hands. Watching him today for the Dockers he was chasing well but he went to ground quite a lot. I think he's one of those players that does well when he has the players looking for him and have no other options, but he doesn't do enough when he's not a main target. Also if the ball isn't kicked to him and it hits the ground he's fairly limited.

Geez, I'd be over the moon if Dawes could give us 2-3 goals a game...

And MM was disappointed that Jack left without telling him - most of the people on this board were just disappointed that Jack left. There is a difference, and I don't think the word "traitor" is appropriate, unless you acknowledge that there are therefore a few traitors playing for our club.

As far as I am aware that is a myth preperuated by Collingwood supporters after we drafted him. IIRC he was touted to go about exactly where he went in the draft, Was no where near as highly rated as Gumbleton or Thorpe.

It actually started from his coach, saying how Dawes sacrificed his game for the team so Hawkins could shine and that had he not had too, would easily have been the equal of Hawkins in his opinion. His draft rating pre injury was late 1st rounder and after slipped out further iirc from articles and such.

In any case Dawes has bolted past Hawkins imo.

As for the kick and giggle cup 4 goals before injury for the night is a good result in any ones books, he also looked very dangerous everytime he was involved in the play.

As far as I'm aware Jack was offered as trade bait before deciding to leave. I'd be very surprised if MM didn't notice that Anthony was a little disillusioned before he decided to leave.

He cops a seriously raw deal imo. There are endless rubbish BF myths about him, such as his apparent lack of effort or defensive pressure. He's too good for VFL, and wasn't considered best 22 by the club seemingly. Nick Davis was, and that's a key difference for me between the two. Anthony is closer to Ball than Davis imo.

We'll obviously survive without him though. Dawes has done better than most would've thought.

Mattys you really need to give up this anti Anthony crusade. You've totally misinterpreted what Malthouse has said. The clarifier was this:

Yeah the vitriol against Anthony is doing you no favours. Jack saw the writing on the wall as much as everyone and made the right decision for himself. Would we like him playing in the VFL as depth? Yeah sure, but it is unreasonable to ask a player to make that kind of sacrifice for what is a very short career for most AFL players, when he could be with another club actually playing senior games. Wish him well and move on, Jack didn't do anything wrong by Collingwood at all.

The huge upside for our forward line with Dawes and Cloke in there is the sheer intimidation factor. The smaller opposition backs will always think twice going for a mark or spoil when they're around because both hit the pack hard and take no prisoners. If Dawes can also become a regular multiple goal kicker then that will be a huge bonus but for now he manages a few and creates heaps of opportunities for the smalls.

As far as Jack Anthony goes I have to say I won't miss him. Early on he did manage a good goal average but he rarely got his own ball at ground level. in fact I'd go as far as to say the he was the principal offender for turnovers in our forward line and to me that's why he wasn't getting game time. Good luck to him if he can make it elsewhere but they'll need to understand that he has a fairly narrow role that he is comfortable playing.
