There's a reason for the way everyone is. It's who your parents are, your mates were, were you lived and where you went to school. No one is inherently a prick or decides to steal a car as a life choice. The fact is, young Aboriginals are up against it. They're a maligned and neglected social group, and it doesn't matter whether you're an awesome little footballer or you want to be a doctor, if you're an an Aboriginal you have a smaller chance of making it and capitalising on your issues.

People say he's a shithead, a deadshit, but that comes with a lot of ignorance. Why does he act like this? Why doesn't he have respect for himself and other people? Why is he resorting to crime? This isn't a white boy saying "get ****ed" to laywer mum and doctor dad because he wants to experiment with a few Red Mitsubishis when Scotch College finishes on Friday – this is someone who was driven for a reason to do this s**t. It's not easy to turn your back on that, and even if an awesome chance like an AFL career at the best club for culture in the country comes up, those issues'll linger.

It's not just sad that he's missed out on a good life, that the Hawks lost a draft pick and a good player, that supporters and watchers lost someone they could be entertained by, it's sad that a young bloke has all the talent and chances in the world but can't capitalise on it. He's falling through the cracks. There's a thousand Aboriginal kids slipping through, too

Yeah, but unlike 99.99% of kids from these backgrounds, Garlett had a gift-wrapped opportunity to get out of that environment. So many people never get a single break in life...they'd be on their knees begging for any ray of hope to get out. He just about had it handed to him on a plate and he pissed it all away.

That's what makes him a deadshit.
