Aye, I noticed him too in my research because I couldn't believe there was no one before Chance Bateman...but one for 13 games in 98 years of the club...o_O

The number of indigenous players in our formative years was a source of great covert, and some blatant overt, racism back in the day.

It's not that surprising since Victoria doesn't have a very big indigenous population. There are only about 30,000 indigenous people in Victoria out of a total population of nearly 6 million, which is about 0.5%, the lowest percentage in the country.

In comparison there are 80,000 indigenous in WA out of a total population of 2 million (4%).

To put it in football terms that's about 1 indigenous player in every 25-man squad in WA.

In Victoria it's 1 in every 8 teams.

Ironically it was Hawthorn and also Collingwood. I think I am right in saying that Chance Bateman was the first aboriginal player to play for Hawthorn, recently obviously they have recruited far more (Franklin, Rioli, Burgoyne, B. Hill) but still.
Just having a geez at your board's thoughts on the situation and noticed this....
You're correct, Chance was the first indigenous player of significance for Hawthorn. It's common belief that the club didn't recruit indigenous players due to concerns over stability. I think it's a point of shame for our club and certainly they've done everything possible to rectify the situation over the last few decades.
The support setup and acceptance of all variety of people is amongst the best in the league, but Dayle just wasn't up to the task unfortunately. Shame, I think most people would have loved to see his talent expressed in fruition, doubt it'll happen now.
Good luck for the weekend and season.

Not really. Plenty of blackfellas from interstate made big names for themselves in the VFL before Bateman made it to Hawthorn, and whoever it was made it to Collingwood.

Chance Bateman wasn't the first Aboriginal player at Hawthorn, he was the first Aboriginal player to get to 100 games!

Plenty is a bit of an overstatement. There were about 35 total in the 100 years before the debut of Michael Long, and not all them were memorable. Collingwood had their first in 1982.

There were probably more indigenous players playing in the WAFL in 1980 than had played in the VFL throughout all of history up to that point.

I don't think it's fair to single out Collingwood and/or Hawthorn. The reason they didn't have many indigenous players was because they didn't do nearly as much recruiting from WA as other clubs, given that they had more money to spend on locals.

List needs serious updating.
Just look at Wellingham's clubs. Thank God it aint so.

Oh come on.

The Krak bro's, Mad Dog Muir, Phil Narkle, Winmar, Mitchell, Rioli, Norm MacDonald, Percy Johnson, Syd Jackson, Polly Farmer, Barry Cable ...

Did Collingwood and Hawthorn have them in their zones?

Hawthorn had some of the most lucrative zones in Victoria, while Collingwood had the benefit of being the most popular club in the country.

Yeah, but for players like these, it was more about bank balance and race acceptance more than zones. They were bypassed pretty regularly from memory.

Exactly. It was his choice and as already said he found it too hard, so no need to feel sorry for him.

Bout time Hawthorn got one wrong with their recruiting... Friggin Midas touch or what!!??

Ad him to the list of blokes with immense talent but lacking the drive and ambition to make it... come to think of it, I can't actually name many. probably cause they amount to heck all and are easily forgotten

What made me laugh about this list is that despite resisting the overtures of Geelong & not playing VFL footy (and a bloody good thing too!!), Stephen Michael still gets a gig on the list for being Clem's dad!

If only he wasn't petrified of flying, TI would be lauded all over the country as one of, if not THE, greatest all time player.

Hardly any Vics and only a few SA's have heard of him. Bloody shame.

Look at Nicholas Winmar's row... he played when Jesus was still a kid, and a bit under 2000 years before his uncle did. I blame Doc Brown & his DeLorean.

Bloody shame for them:p!
You'd have to think there'd also be a few indigenous fellas who either didn't identify or weren't (for whatever reason).
Our own conrod-piston-legged ruckbloke Jono Griffin wasn't dislocating his elbow from up the back 'til encouraged by some others,so the story went.
I guess if he hadn't been persuaded he would not be in the stats??

Tbh, reading on his attitude to the whole thing he's got a great deal of perspective to learn on how to cope when it gets tough.

We've all had employers or situations that demand more than we feel we could give, it's how you get better.

If someone genuinely told him it was in his best interests to opt out to save his ego, then he's got plenty of work to do even be a productive member of Australia let alone AFL.

Might sound harsh, but this all sounds like 'It was harder than I thought it be, I'll just give up'. Instead of 'forces out of my control caused me to stop my dream'.

Meh, not everyone dreams to be an AFL player. I know of a few guys who could have made it but just didn't put in much effort because there are other things they would rather be doing. Not saying that's the case for Garlett but who knows.

It is not just an indigenous thing. Up to the mid 80s there were plenty of guys good enough to go but who chose to stay.
