The reason why daylight savings is so popular in the Eastern States comes down to a simple geographical fact. The Great Dividing Range extends all the way down through Queensland, NSW and parts of Victoria, this means the sun sets behind the range thus limiting sunlight hours. This is the opposite in WA in which the Darling Scarp prevents an early sunrise, however enables a later sunset as light does not fade until the sun has fallen below the horizon.

It's hardly the Andes vs the Himalayas.

Sun still rises bloody early in Perth during summer.

No, but it is a factor. The other one is that Perth is situated quite westerly in its time zone, so gets later sunsets anyway making DLS less necessary.

Add in the popularity of early morning activities because of the strong afternoon sea breezes in summer, and it's not that hard to understand why it never gets up.

Daylight savings is awsome.

Finish work at 5, still have time to go play a round of golf before dinner if you want. Can even get a full 18 hole round in.

What is not to like?
Come to Perth, you can have a round before work as well as after.

Caesar defending conservatism.... shocked.

Seriously he's like their super hero on these boards. It's hilarious.

You've got a thing about Caesar, don't you?

I love Brisbane but **** me what a bunch of insular backwards *******s the people here are on this issue.

I always find it weird that Adelaide is ahead of Brisbane over summer.

I'm used to us being hours behind everyone since we're generally years behind anyway, but the time being 1pm in Melbourne, 12pm in Brisbane and 12.30pm in Adelaide is just weird.

lolol

Sounds wonderful, grandad.

Anyway, the "Perth doesn't need it because it's so totally west in the zone" is a myth http://www.timeanddate.com/time/map/

WA doesn't have it because its politicians are lamewads who won't legislate it like everything else because of the strong provincial idiots in their ranks. Instead every generation or so they do a doomed referendum because the conservative public will oppose anything they are indifferent about.

Now who's up for some 5am golf!? I go to bed at 8.30pm and I'll be damned if I'm shutting the curtains!!

Bullshit.

In summer there are far more people in last hour of daylight out and about (and awake for that matter) than in the first hour.

It loses referendums because simpletons only vote yes for anything if all parties hold their hands.

If they legislated it (like they do everything else) the bulk of people would stop caring overnight. Country types would complain longer but like in most of Australia they'd quickly realise it doesn't hurt them or they don't care.

Agree 100% with you.

I absolutely hate that we don't have it up here, especially considering that SEQ would be the perfect place for it. This isn't as much of a problem for me now, as I'm a uni student and sleep later most nights, but it was a huge problem when I was at school (and will be again once I start to work full-time) is the sun getting up at 5am in the morning and as a result losing an hours sleep, the sun gets so bright and it's almost impossible to get back to sleep. Lets face it, no-one wants to be awake at 5am, however almost everyone will be awake between 7-8pm. Sometimes I've even been woken up at 4.30am because the birds are making so much noise at the sun rising. SEQ needs daylight savings. I can understand the rest of Queensland not wanting it (especially considering places like Mt. Isa virtually have Daylight Savings all year round), but there is absolutely no reason why Queensland shouldn't have two different time zones. NSW has two different time zones all year round as Broken Hill is half an hour behind the rest of NSW. If they can do it, there's no reason why we can't. Also from an economic point-of-view, it makes sense for us to be on the same time as the two main business centres (Sydney and Melbourne) and our capital city. It also pisses me off how Tasmania and South Australia are way ahead of us on this.

I could go on and on but we really need it up here.

Also the people who are against Daylight Savings are like the people who oppose marriage equality and clash jumpers, they can't come up with one logical reason against it and are a bunch of idiots.

For someone who lives in Melbourne you seem very angry about what happens in Perth.

Anyway, I voted yes in the early 90s. Went into the recent three year trial a committed yes voter, came out three years later a committed no. There were simply no advantages and plenty of disadvantages to it.
