Daylight saving makes a lot of sense in Melbourne, looking forward to it starting I've never been to Perth so I don't really have an opinion on whether or not they should have it, but Brisbane not having it has never made sense to me, especially for a place with tourist attractions that surely would benefit from an extra hour of sunlight.

WA doesn't have it because its politicians are lamewads who won't legislate it like everything else because of the strong provincial idiots in their ranks. Instead every generation or so they do a doomed referendum because the conservative public will oppose anything they are indifferent about.

Now who's up for some 5am golf!? I go to bed at 8.30pm and I'll be damned if I'm shutting the curtains!!

So why should the government legislate something against the expressed wishes of the electorate?

For all of us who get up at an ungodly hour for work, it's nice in Summer for the sun to rise and for roads to be visible (it's hard enough in Winter) but daylight savings means that its pitch black in the mornings as well in Summer.

As I mentioned before it's ****ing weird having the sun set at 9pm at night! What about the farmers in the north of the state having to deal with daylight savings? Isn't Queensland exempt from DS because of this very reason?

Should've specified the ones against DLS in South East Queensland. Here if we did have DLS the sun would set at 8pm. Also I stated in my previous post that QLD should have two different time zones during DLS.

Also Perth is different to Brisbane because Perth is west of the time zone, while Brisbane is east (along with being on the same time zone as Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra - also Perth is more isolated). In summer the sun can rise as early as 4.50am here because we're on the eastern side of our time zone, and the birds start making noise at around 4.30am and it sucks. It gets very annoying when you wake up to wizz at 4.30am and can't get back to sleep, I hated it when I was at school because I had to wait about 4 hours for school and I couldn't really do anything beforehand apart from getting ready. Also if you're working that early, you should expect it to be dark when you leave for work.

DLS would be perfect here. It would mean 5 hours to play sport or go to the beach after school and/or three hours after work. I know DLS doesn't suit certain areas but it would be perfect here.

The trend in the Perth referendum showed that support for DST diminished the further away from the coast you got. Those living in seaside suburbs were most in favour, presumably because of cooler average temperatures and easier access to the beach after work.

For the average person in the eastern suburbs of Perth, there's little advantage to having longer, hotter evenings given the temperatures already endured. It just means you have to wait even longer for the Doctor to come in. I can understand why the referendum was defeated, even if it is a pain for anybody who works in an industry requiring communication and travel between Perth and the east coast.

DST would be fine in SE Queensland but terrible for most of the state. Most bananabenders don't want Queensland on two different timezones, for a bunch of reasons.

I don't live there, but surely more people are awake to enjoy the sunlight between 8pm and 9pm than between 5:00am and 6:00am? What percentage of the population are farmers? Surely the minority should not get the way.

Summer afternoons in Perth are quite arguably more to be endured than enjoyed.

And one could argue that having the same timezone as most of the major Chinese cities is a major advantage for Perth business to exploit in the future.

I think that would be a fairly specious argument. A one hour time difference is neither here nor there. OTOH a three hour time difference is very inconvenient, as it effectively knocks out half the work day.

I've only met 2 people over here that like it, my mate's missus that is from Victoria and my brother that works as a stock market analyst and wants an extra hour sleep.

Con: You have an hour less sunday to recover from the hangover and to get ready for work Monday.

Pro: There is an hour less in the day to plough through before Sunday night before you can go to bed early for Monday morning.

Reckon it is a bit early to start it. Daylight hasn't increased for summer that much yet so it will be dark getting up for work early. Reckon mid Novemeber start would be better. Personally prefer none at all (as it sucks having 4-5 the hottest part of the day mid summer) but never really care much once it arrives.

Would be perfect for SE Qld should just have 2 time zones. Don't know up North makes a hell of a lot of sense given their proximity to the equator. Brisbane ideal for it: Theory being DLS was invented as summer naturally has more daylight then winter so time is manipulated so the extra daylight comes at night and not in the morning. SEQld summer days start at 530 with the birds up and making noise before 5. Qld also doesn't have a lot of twilight so the nights would still cool off fantastically and it would be dark at 8 anyway. Don't know about Perth. 40Cs at 5-6 would be brutal. Up to them.

Have you lived in the eastern suburbs of Perth? It is too ****ing hot. In summer you are hanging out first of all for the sea breeze to come in and cool the place off, and secondly for the sun to go down and stop baking the place to all shit.

DST just means those two things happen an hour later. That is not at all desirable, from the POV of the majority of the population. "Oh you can go to the park" is a pretty asinine argument when you're cooking in three weeks straight of 40+ degree heat.

It is not a myth. It is a reality, as proven by your map. Now you are saying that other places have it that are western, well no-duh. If that was your point, you should have said as such.

Also, you should consider latitude, centres of economic power, population distribution and a bunch of other factors as to why some of those places have DLS.
