Wanna take a guess at what time the sun would rise if that was the case?
oh noes! australians cant handle darkness at 8am! woe is us ey? Still an hour earlier then a few euro countries during the winter.

judging a city by it's weather is one of the ultimate follies imo. if i had to list my favourite cities in the world i would go with melbourne, cairns, wellington, queenstown, dublin, edinburgh, brussels and riga in no particular order - all of which have vastly different climates.

a place with good people, good culture, things to do during the day, good nightlife and good variety of each will always overcome any climate barriers thrown at it.

no amount of perfect weather can help a place if it doesn't have at least those five things.

Weather is a dealbreaker for a lot of people though. I can put up with a city lacking a lot of things, but if the climate is no good then none of the rest matters.

Melbourne is probably my favourite city in Australia to visit, but after two successive bitter, rainy winters of going to work in the dark and coming home in the dark I was just about ready to top myself. Couldn't get out of there quick enough.

We get it, you like to sleep in.

You don't understand the point of daylight savings, do you?

What did you expect? It's ****ing winter mate, harden up!

I hope you have the same sentiments when you get a summer of 40C practically every day.

Perth summers are shithouse, but the rest of the year the weather is generally beautiful. Much nicer than Melby at least.

Melbourne winters are very hard to deal with. This year i made the decision that for as long as i live here i'll need to break up winter with a sunny holiday.

true, but i have always found it a tad strange the preoccupation with weather. maybe my nonchalance-ness towards weather is the strange one though?

the only climate attribute that has ever got to me in a place i lived was the lack of sunlight during winter in dublin. cold was no bother, wind no bother, drizzle no bother. only about 6 hours of sunlight a day however got to me a bit. pushed through though. the awesomeness of the bars and people made up for it.

Spoken like someone who's never lived in a tolerable climate.

What's wrong with Melbourne's winters? o_O
Long, dark, windy, rainy, cold.

I suppose if you grow up with them then you might be used to it, but if you're accustomed to a more temperate latitude they are pretty grim. I found it ineffably depressing to go Monday to Friday barely seeing the sun, and struggling home in the rain to a cold dark studio flat every night for months on end.

I lived in New York for one winter. 70+ cms of snow in one night that didn't completely disappear for over a month. Barely got above 1 degree for two months. Melbourne's winters are plenty tolerable, thank you.

Yes, well. That's a bit like beating me every day, and then asking me if I'd find being beaten once a week tolerable.

That probably depends on how seriously one takes the weather.

It depends on what you're used to.

The maternal branch of my family are from Melbourne, and the ones who moved to Sydney can no longer tolerate Melbourne winters. Once you get used to a mild, temperate climate it's a bit hard to go back to a city where you live in wet gloom for half the year.

I do. Summer i can go down to the local basketball courts and play pick up games till 7pm. down in perth, Daylight savings i could do this till 9. I would also like to do this in winter however. The day-break is wasted. Im getting up at 7 every morning and going to work, Im not exactly enjoying the daylight getting dressed and being stuck on a highway

I might ask, Do you understand the point of daylight savings? So that countries like Germany ect. don't have a setting sun at 4pm?

What the hell does Germany have to do with daylight savings in Perth? You're missing the point here I think, so you're changing continents.

My view on daylight savings is this:

Especially the STD bit.

****ing oath. Spent New Years Eve at a party when it was 42 degrees during the day. The beer and the girls walking around in bikinis near the pool made it even better.

Was a awesome day and night that's for sure. :thumbsu:
