Not sure if this is the right place to ask this question

Firstly, The medias reporting on this has been non existant and shambolic. I cannot fathom how its just been swept under the rug with such little care or mention. The entire post game broadcast about Collingwood and this guys club crushing contract wasnt bought up even once in the aftermath. There seems to be this air of "its too sensitive to talk about" which doesnt really fly when you consider how guys like Ben Cousins have been treated with similar mental health issues. Trotting out a drug addicted Ben Cousins on prime time TV is okay, but commenting on the finger painting of a actual AFL listed footballer is off limits. Its complete horse s**t.

Now for the real question. When he is paid out, how should the game treat his salary? Is this a medical retirement scenario where the payments can be outside the cap, or should it be considered a delisting and payments made inside the cap? Medical retirement is normally analyzed by a set of doctors with supporting evidence but mental health retirement really isnt set by any hard evidence in relation to x-rays and what not. It is up to a medical professional for sure but it is something you can feign (not saying Beams is. saying later on down the line)

I dont think it can be considered a medical retirement unfortunately. It opens up a mine field that will be hard for the game to get away from. You could end up with situations where say Jared Polec says "* this" and then throws his toys in the air and North react with a "lets medically retire him based on mental health" as a instant reaction as opposed too keeping him in the game and wha tnot

I do believe however the payout terms need adjusting in regards to how it works and for the AFL to adopt a similar approach to the MLB where the terms and conditions are entirely negotiable. With Beams current contract Collingwood would have to stretch it out for 4 years for example as a max but ideally, given his issues and where both parties stand, itd make more sense for Collingwood to stretch it out over 20+ years and just providing him a yearly wage. It would be huge for them right now as getting Beams off the books would be the difference between them say keeping DeGoey, Moore and Mihocek and losing 1 or 2 of them

Id also hope someone in the AFL media profession grows a pair and starts reporting on this issue seriously

Huh? Im on Collingwoods side here.

You are being lumped with this huge ass problem and been asked to deal with it yourselves. The media have given him a free ride, pinned all the blame on Collingwood and flat out refused to acknowledge the problem. They pussyfoot around the guy like he is some chosen one and refuse to call him out for essentially refusing to turn up to work but demanding he be paid his full wage.

Collingwood fans deserve much better then this

No he doesnt. I actually think it’s a very pertinent question. Similar questions should have been asked when Sam Murray and Willie Rioli largely fell off the face of the earth after their positive ASADA samples. There’s been zero transparency in both of those processes too and it seems that AFL house hold a lot of bearing on what does and doesn’t get reported. The Beams situation is clearly a sweeping under the carpet deal and it makes you question how journalists have their pockets lined, along with all the other issues that the OP has quite correctly pointed out. I think OP is asking fair and balanced questions and I’d also like to know those answers.

What really struck me is the entire post game Collingwood talk on Fox Footy in regards to Collingwood is essentially about "Can they afford to do X". So the entire discussion was about the salary cap. Not one person managed to bring up Dayne Beams situation, how it can be handled and how it can affect this situation.

You cant discuss a problem without bringing up the biggest core factor of the ******* problem and be expected to be taken seriously as journalists really. Its hogwash

If I was a Collingwood fan, id demand a straight answer because it is what they deserve

I wonder how much money Collingwood spent getting Dayne Beams getting off rape charges. And if that was included in the salary cap at the time.

This one stinks. Collingwood knew they were giving a contract to someone with serious gambling issues. It's common knowledge.

The Beams payout is quite small, as he was on close to a minimum wage after his gambling debts were covered by Collingwood board members when he came down from Brisbane. In any case, the payout should absolutely be inside the cap.
He signed a 4 year contract worth $2mil.

Payout should be in the cap. Collingwood knew his mental health issues before the trade and they shouldn't be bailed out for making poor decisions.

Medical retirement is a valid reason and is outside the cap
Mental health problems are medical problems
So outside the cap
This should be the same for all players and all clubs rather than up to the AFL
If you recruit a player over 25 he will have some medical injury it is the nature of a contact sport

An attempt by a club to get around the rules by claiming mental health can easily disproved.
To retire on these grounds medical reports by specialists would be necessary
If work cover/ insurance is involved mandatory

Until salaries are publicly disclosed like American pro sports the salary cap is entirely negotiable depending on how the AFL is feeling on any given day. Rules on the run.

And as long as the AFL decides who gets Ambassador payments and how much they are for then its even more of a rort.
