Lions not resting on laurels, eye Blues scalp
BRISBANE’S drought-breaking win over Fremantle was met by a shorter than usual celebration as the club switched focus to ending another streak against Carlton on Saturday. The last time Brisbane won in Perth, Jon Brown dominated and Daniel Rich was the only current Lion at the club.

Captain Dayne Zorko says in the past the Lions have been guilty of enjoying victory too much, which may explain in part why you have to go back to Rounds 5 and 6 of 2015 for the Lions’ last back-to-back wins. But Zorko, who at least has a win in the 2017 International Rules series at Subiaco Oval to his name, said it did not mean they didn’t appreciate the significance of their first win in Perth since 2010 after the game.

“We haven’t won over here for a long time, and to go about it the way we did and keep our foot on the throat was really pleasing,’’ he said. “To get a win at a place where every team finds it hard was really good for us but also shows us we are on the right track and it demonstrates to our young players that our football does stand up.

“It was a hostile crowd, when we scored there was a dead silence and we had to generate our own enthusiasm and that was also a great learning for us.’’ Zorko said dwelling on the 55-point win was confined to the sheds after the game as the side focused on the logistics of attempting a rare back-to-back win. The Lions’ plane home from Perth was delayed and they did not return to Brisbane till about 8pm.

The players did extra training in the lead-up to the game knowing the short turnaround before the Carlton game at the Gabba on Saturday meant recovery would be the focus of the week, and even the main training session on Thursday would be lighter than usual. Zorko also revealed the Lions had identified a trend of lapses after wins and attempted to rectify them by sharpening up the players’ concentration levels.

“In previous years we have fallen into the trap of having a win and then being sloppy the next week or for at least a quarter, which has been enough to cost us,’’ he said. “We want to be mature in the way we deal with successes. We can’t get ahead of ourselves. “In the past, we have fallen into a trap of thinking it is going to happen next week, and that is certainly in our mindset as leaders to reinforce that – even though we know our process works – we still have to execute it. “We don’t have that problem anymore, but there was certainly a time when we enjoyed the wins too much.’’

First time I have seen this rule apply. Funnily enough a similar thing happened last night but the free was given right in front.

I thought the free kick should have been from where he hit the ball not from where it went through.

The game last night the Richmond player hand balled from about the same distance and it hit the goal post thus the free was from right in front

Four Merrett-Murray Medals in a row for Zorko
Brisbane Lions Captain Dayne Zorko has become the second man in Club history to win four consecutive Club Champion awards, after he was presented with the Merrett-Murray Medal in Brisbane tonight.

The only other person to achieve such a feat was Kevin Murray, who won five straight from 1960-64. Murray was there to present Zorko his Merrett-Murray Medal in person, alongside Roger Merrett and Lions Chairman Andrew Wellington.

The count was one of the closest recorded in Club history, with Zorko winning by just a single vote over former captain Dayne Beams. Zorko polled 250 votes, while Beams finished second with 249. Ruckman Stefan Martin closely followed in third place with 242 votes.

“The Magician” played in all 22 games for the Lions this year and was promoted to the captaincy mid-season after Beams stepped down from the position. He averaged 21 disposals, seven tackles and one goal per game, kicking 26 for the year. The midfielder achieved a career high of 159 tackles.

The 29-year-old’s recognition sees him sits outright seventh on the all-time Merrett-Murray Medal list behind Murray (9), John Murphy (5), Paul Roos (5), Allan Ruthven (5), Garry Wilson (5) and Michael Voss (5). He surpasses three-time winners Simon Black, Jonathan Brown, Norm Brown and Len Wigraft.

Zorko edges Beams in B&F showdown
MEDAL collector Dayne Zorko has continued his remarkable ascent into Lions folklore becoming the second man to win four consecutive Club Champion awards, after claiming the Merrett-Murray Medal in Brisbane on Friday night.

The prodigious trophy hunter will enter next season with club great Kevin Murray’s record of five straight from 1960-64 in his sights. The count was the closest on record with Zorko winning by a vote over former skipper Dayne Beams.

The 29-year-old’s recognition saw him move to outright seventh on the all-time Club Champion list behind Murray (nine), John Murphy (five), Paul Roos (five), Allan Ruthven (five), Garry Wilson (five) and Michael Voss (five). He surpassed three-time winners Simon Black, Jonathan Brown, Norm Brown and Len Wigraft.

Dayne pips Dayne for fourth straight Lion crown
A SHOCKED Dayne Zorko has won his fourth consecutive Merrett-Murray Medal, taking out Brisbane's best and fairest by a solitary vote from Dayne Beams.

Zorko polled 250 votes, edging out Beams (249) and ruckman Stefan Martin (242).

Beams started the night a warm favourite to win, but Zorko got home and could hardly believe his success. "I can't believe it," Zorko told AFL.com.au. "It's pretty incredible. There was 10 guys on that list that had a genuine case to win that medal."

After being overlooked for four consecutive drafts before being snapped up by the Lions in 2011, Zorko is in the midst of an incredible career. He said winning four in a row had not sunk in. "I think that's what got me emotional. "It's rare. I get goosebumps just talking about it. I guess I don't understand it all. "It's going to be great to go into the history books with some of the greats of the Fitzroy Football Club, Brisbane Lions Football Club and the AFL.

"I'm still in shock. I genuinely can't believe it." 'The Magician' played in all 22 games, averaging 21 disposals, seven tackles and kicking a total of 26 goals.

Zorko had his troubles with taggers early in the season but figured a way through to become one of the Lions' most consistent performers. He was also promoted to the captain's role once Beams stepped aside following the round nine win over Hawthorn.
