Five Lions rewarded with All-Australian squad selection

An impressive five Brisbane Lions players have been named in this year All-Australian squad of 44 players recognised for outstanding individual seasons in 2025.

Co-Captain Harris Andrews, defender Dayne Zorko and midfield trio Josh Dunkley, Hugh McCluggage and Zac Bailey are the five all in contention to claim a blazer on Thursday night.

AFL 2025: Brisbane champion Dayne Zorko and the impact of the Ashcroft brothers
Dayne Zorko gathered for breakfast with Brisbane’s “older boys” during grand final week and the Ashcroft brothers were high on the agenda.

Zorko and the experienced Lions had already watched Will guide them to the premiership last year and sensed enough in draftee Levi to expect similar.

Over coffee and eggs, they joked about prolonging their careers by falling into the Ashcrofts’ slipstream.

“We mentioned it at breakfast, a few of us older boys, we’ll just keep trying to hang onto their coat-tails and they’ll take us there,” Zorko laughed.

“They were huge again today.”

Zorko and his men were right, as Will swept up a second Norm Smith Medal in as many years and Levi kicked a stunning second-quarter goal.

Being a Lion has never been so good – but it wasn’t always smooth sailing for Brisbane and its champion Zorko.

Zorko was loyal during the lean times, collecting four consecutive best and fairests when Brisbane won just 18 of a possible 88 games.

He once dreamt of the opportunity to play in a premiership but is now salivating at what a triumphant side built on players aged under 25 can sustain.

“I wanted the opportunity to play in one, I didn’t think I’d have two (premierships), to now have two and play in three grand finals is enormous,” he said.

“I mean, the scope and improvement in this group is only going to get better.

“You don’t want to go the early crow, but I think with the growth in these younger kids, hopefully we can keep this run.”
