The owner of Foxtel, the AFL’s major broadcast partner, believes it is paying too much for the rights following its decision to pull the plug on a second domestic soccer deal in Europe over financial concerns.

Two senior media industry sources, who requested anonymity to discuss contractual matters, said Foxtel’s British owner, sports streaming giant DAZN, felt it was overpaying for a domestic product with limited scope for subscription growth, and could seek to claw back money from the agreement.

if this does happen that DAZN/foxtel give up the afl rights surely this has to be some sort of DAZN inside job to kill off foxtel/kayo if they get rid of afl, why would anyone bother paying $40 a month for it (especially if they then also lose nrl)...

It’s a just a play by Dazn to get a discount. This is what they do, buy an asset that is priced based on existing contracts and then try and make an outsized return by using aggressive tactics to restructure those contracts.

Foxtel won’t exist in five years, Dazn will sell the non-sport based business and run the sport division into the ground.

Of course they'd deny it but fun tid bit.

The Age’s report, written by AFL journalist Sam McClure, did not include a response from DAZN, nor did it include a quote from the AFL.

The Australian understands The Age sent DAZN an email at 5.57am London time on Wednesday, with the streaming company given two hours to provide a response before the Nine-owned tabloid was to publish.

By the time DAZN representatives had seen the email, The Age had published the story. A DAZN spokesman subsequently sent The Age a statement totally refuting the claims in the story, but it was too late for inclusion in Thursday’s print edition of The Age, given the time difference. “We categorically refute any claims we are unhappy with Foxtel’s AFL deal,” he said. “We stand by Foxtel’s commitment to the AFL and fully support continued growth of the partnership.”
