It also might just be me, but I find the stories of dogs waiting 10 years for their dead masters to be the highest level of loyalty in pets.

Loyalty's great, but it's not the be all and end all of having a pet.

I have always been a dog person, but I don't think you can fully appreciate the benefits of cat ownership until you actually own and raise one yourself from kittenhood. You might not get the overt and slavish displays of loyalty and affection that you do from dogs, but they are surprisingly companionable animals.

Ended up calling my dad after getting confirmation on the microchip. He broke the news to mum - she wasn't really enjoying the trip anyway with the worry.

I love both, but dogs are always awesome whereas cats are inconsistent. Some cats are loving, loyal, playful etc. and some cats aren't. ALL dogs are loving, loyal, playful etc., or at least all the ones I've ever known are.

I like dogs but they're just so damn needy. Sometimes it's nicer to have a cat around... you get the company without the constant appeals for attention.

A dog that isnt sapped all over tends to be better. Show dogs love but remember they're still dogs, not mini-people.

My dog is often content just lying near where you are etc Although she's nearly 16 now so all she really does is lie around.

Only real annoying time is when you just want to enjoy your food without the smell of dog breath around you

If your dad will be able to handle it, call him privately and tell him. Mean he can break it to your mum when the time is right and in person.

I feel for you buddy - pets to some people are members of thier family so as hard as it is, it is good you are asking advice.

If I were your mum, I think the above suggestion might be the best option. Don't tell your mum over the phone.
