dean wallis - is he coaching material ?

whilst i can see the logic behind grant thomas appointing matt rendell and kenny sheldon as assistant coaches i am extremely surprised with the appointment of wallis. thomas has said that it only took one interview for him to realise that wallis has something to offer the football department as an assistant coach.

do any of you know what he's got to offer? he always gave me the impression of a barry hall type who is tough but stupid. i may be completely wrong and he may be an intelligent man. can any of you bombers supporters fill me in on what the strengths of dean wallis the coach might be.

surely following the example of sheedy would only confuse and baffle any sane person, only the martians ever understand what he's on about.

In one word, Yes

i think you are completely wrong

Wallis is a very smart, his toughness wasnt his only attribute
He had a great ability of reading the play and assessing what was happining
In the games he played in the VFL this season he was able to direct traffic and you could sense the way the young players were learning from him

Wally spent this year as an assistant coach at the western jets so he does have that experience

I dont see Dean being a future AFL coach and his input on game day might be limited, but as a development coach and mentor i think he will be very good for StKilda

every now and then i'm guilty of judging a book by it's cover, especially if it's as rough looking as wally's.

thanks for the info, i didn't realise he had been down at the western jets this year. if he can instill some discipline and footy smarts to our younger blokes he will be a good acquisition to the club, as next year we will have over 20 players that are 21 and under.

with any luck he might have a job after rd15 next year, as long as he doesn't mention that word 'culture'.
