From The Advertiser:

Fuller was quietly content with Crows draftee Fergus Watts' senior SANFL debut at full forward, although the youngster was run ragged by Sturt full back Matthew Smith, often taking him to the Eagles' full back line.

Smith stretch Watts' endurance to breaking point and the Eagles responded by benching him to preserve the AFL hppeful for greater things.

"He certainly enjoyed the run," Fuller said. "He aspires to play AFL level so he's got to take the transition but I thought he acquitted himself pretty well. It's hard work for him as Smith does run from the backline but Fergus shows he plays accountable football and that was a good sign for us as well. He just needs to get cleaner and work on his one takes and his awareness but when he gets fitter he'll be a lot better player."

I think that AFL game is going to be put on hold for a while if bloody Matthew Smith can run him ragged...

You're a bloody fool.

It is nothing LIKE spitting. If we can't be critical of our team, why bother watching the damn thing?

Fact is, if we're going to be realistic, Fergus is going to have to do a lot better than that before we rush him into the AFL.

If he can't beat Smith at full-back, he is going to get ripped apart in the AFL and may never recover mentally.

Spinny, spinny, spinny.

There has been no suggestion from the AFC at all about rushing Watts into the Crows side. I know that the contrary view exists because he is special, and they want him as their long term CHF.

Think about the logic in what you just posted, and how you've coveniently overlooked a mass of related circumstances.

Watts is 18 years of age, and played U'18's last year. This is his first year in the system and thanks to a dose of OP, has played one reserve game before the match you're referring to, after missing 8 weeks of intensive training.

Smith is 21 and in his 4th year in the AFL system. He has had a totally uninterrupted pre-season. Of course he can run like a March hare, while on the other hand that's the last thing Fergus needs until he's got about another dozen games under his belt. Fitness would be the only aspect of Smith's game that would be better than Watts at this stage and that is only a temporary thing.

Spinny, Watts is class and Smith is crap. If Watts meets Smith once he has a dozen games under his belt, the only running Smith will do is to the boundary after he has been dragged for getting an absolute thrashing.

As Fuller correctly says about Watts, "when he gets fitter he'll be a lot better player."

Time to take off those sh*t coloured spectacles, and look at things more objectively.

Macca, macca, macca.

Seems it is you with the sh*t coloured specteacles, love.

I never said the AFC was going to rush him in. More I was referring to the suggestions of a number of posters on this board that he'll be in within a few games.

As for looking at things objectively, that is something you obviously can't do. My post WAS objective - what is wrong with saying he's going to have to do a lot better before he gets an AFL game? NOTHING subjective about that, I'm just stating reality.

You, on the other hand, conjure up this little dream:

'Fitness would be the only aspect of Smith's game that would be better than Watts at this stage and that is only a temporary thing.

Spinny, Watts is class and Smith is crap. If Watts meets Smith once he has a dozen games under his belt, the only running Smith will do is to the boundary after he has been dragged for getting an absolute thrashing.'

You clearly have the biased glasses on, macca23, so unless you actually CAN be objective and not spout off a bunch of self-important, subjective Watts-love at me, don't attack MY objectivity.

Objectivity is not a characteristic that could ever be associated with you, spinny. Negativity is more your go.

The very fact that you started off such a ridiculous thread in the first place demonstrates that.

As for whether I have objectivity or not, I'll leave that to better judges than you to make that judgement.

Negativity? Realism maybe. I did not write Watts off anywhere, rather I said he has a way to go before the debut many on here have been harping on about.

Considering the invective some on here level at the likes of Marsh, Bassett, Smith etc, I am hardly the most negative.

1. I'll accept that as realism, because I wouldn't be playing him at all this year, and have stated that repeatedly. I'd like to see him really firing over a reasonable period of time for his confidence levels when he does make his debut.

2. Not guilty on Bassett, but guilty as hell on Smith and Marsh. Marsh is one of the greatest duds to have played the game, and IMO Smith will be one of the greatest duds to have never played an AFL game. I see that as realism, but others may see that as negativity..............e.g. their mums and dads!! :)

Marsh is nowhere near as bad as some, be realistic.

Even just looking at our past lists...David Gallagher, Angwin, Gilligan, Fitzgerald etc etc

Marsh has played more good games than that lot combined.

Without getting into too heavy a debate on Marsh, the regard that the AFC had for his games with them was summed up accurately, when they delisted our only back-up ruckman without any alternative in sight. Enough was enough.

Marsh played 48 games for the Crows at an average of 6 disposals per game - that's definitely dud status in my book.

Not quite. Clarke has played 202 games and averaged between 9 and 10 disposals and 18 hitouts per game. The dud has averaged 6 disposals and 9 hitouts per game.

And we all criticize Clarke for not getting enough of the ball, when he's averaging greater than 50% more disposals and twice the taps.

Marsh = dud.

The only thing that Smith has going for him is his size (and he has put on a fair bit of muscle. He genuinely looks like a KPP now but still playes like a flanker) and secondly he has got good aerobic capacity.

As I said in a previous thread - Fergus took a few grabs and had a few kicks and not a bad outing for his first game. Will get better over time and will keep all those non-Eagles fans (or non-believers) posted.

Whilst David Gallagher had the worst disposal of any player ever to don the AFC guernsey - I still rate him higher than Ben Marsh.

Angwin is a ****. Gilligan should have stuck to his Island. Fitzgerald could have been a good player, had his body been able to stand up to AFL footy.

Anyone hear the rumours Fitzy is on Big Brother 4. Seriously I read this in the Tiser last week.

As I said last week when I saw Gus in the ressies, he needs match fitness. I wouldnt worry too much about yesterday. Give Watts a month of SANFL footy and he'll be much better off.

 You're kidding

If thats the case I hope he wins it. He is a great bloke to have a beer and a chat with. I reckon viewers (especially ladies) will fall in love with him

Back to Fergus I think you're spot on. Give him a month of regular SANFL footy and he'll be alright.

I see Andrews once again was best players for the tigers in reserves. Mind you they got absolutely murdered.

No jokes about Fitzy - it was in the gossip coloum during the week. Rucci was quoted on it said the same sort of stuff you have.

Andrews - would have to be pushing for a senior gig (or change of club) soon.

Surely he would have to get a game sooner rather than later. Every week he was in Glenelg's best players and in the last 2 rounds he was their best player. If he doesn't get a game soon I think its in his best interest (and AFC's for that matter) to go somewhere where he will get an opportunity.

As long as he keeps us entertained I will do my best to let him win the money. :) I'm just not too sure if he can survive without at least seeing the football for that long!

Oh and on this whole Watts/Smith issue, I'd say good on Smitty. It shows that he can be impressive. All the power to him! :) Lets just hope he can keep it up and star in the team one day.
