I think it's a different philosophy that our coaching group has.

Predictability is seen as a massive positive as it allows for the team to work towards known paths and decisions by the players. In fact Ive heard various coaches and players mention b that they believe the more predictable to each other the better. I can see this point and when it works it's like a beautiful free flowing thing. But the flip side is we are equally as predictable to the opposition.
I don't think you have to do something every game, but when theres a clear advantage to be had, i think you need that killer instinct.

So on Footy Classified they said Scott had a plan to isolate Lever deep so he couldn’t play that intercept defender and he struggled.

Welcome to your new reality Jake.
It's almost as though everyone in the world could see it but the Melbourne FC.

Which sounds about right.

Lever couldn't give 2 shits he signed a 4 year deal on 800k he could spud it up or play reserves he's still be getting the cash.

All well and good. But like Malcolm Blight said, if you don't roll the dice and try something different in the GF the other coach will and he will beat you. Remembering that Blight learned the hard way losing his first GFs.

I have serious doubts we will get anywhere near another GF for years but if we do hopefully Pyke is a quick learner and not Craig Mk 2 with a stubborn naivety believing in his own dogma.

I'm in agreeance, am merely pointing out the AFC point of view.

I've heard the AFC players and coaches yeah about this philosophy alot. Not sure if it started before or during Pyles reign.

When can we get a coaching group that will try something like this instead of "well just back ourselves in to do what we do best"
I guess you go with what works. In many ways what Brisbane in the early 2000's and Hawthorn from 2012-15 did was very predictable. They were just so good at it that teams couldn't beat them, even though they knew what they were doing.

Did you see how Lever reacted when he didn't play finals in 2015 or when he didn't come straight back into the team from injury in early 2017?

Jakey doesn't take playing in the 2s very well at all.

More positive news for Jakey boy.

Article even suggests the Dess may need to consider bringing in a KPD to help Jakey boy out.....wait what?. Isn't Jakey the best key defender in the universe.
Think daddy might be busy on social media this week.

Reading the Melbourne board, most posters there seem to have quickly figured out that Lever can't play as a KPD (well he can, just not very well).

hopefully this is all part of the plan and Goody's not betraying us after all ;)

EDIT: how many players do Melbourne still have that know what tanking feels like?
Roos said on MMM that there are 5 players left from when he took over.
So not many.

I assume they mean when Goody came in as senior assistant. Dees haven't lost 39 players in 2 years.

Goody appointed 18 September 2014. Here's a list from then (11 days later):

http://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/2014-09-29/melbournes-2015-list

Gawn, Hogan, Hunt, Jones, Kennedy-Harris, Harmes, Jetta, Viney, Vince, Tyson, Salem, Pederson, T.McDonald

The Unlucky 13 :)

Unless Roos was talking about himself. Even then, it's wrong. Roos came in September 13. Here's their 2014 list:

http://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/2013-11-27/melbournes-2014-playing-list

Same 13 names are there.

He means players still at the club now who were there for the tanking debacle in 2012.

Roos took over in 2013.
Gawn, McDonald, Jones, and Jetta are the only ones I can find that are sitll on Melbourne's List.

Didnt count Pedersen, Kent or Viney becuase they were brought in that year with Roos at the helm.

I'm not sure what Roos was referring to, but in reality there are less than 6 left from those dark dark days. In fact he probably said "about 5 or 6 left"

Have quite enjoyed reading this thread. You blokes go hard like we did on Scully. Lever will be very good for us, but hopefully he doesn't play at FB for a very long time if ever.

Correction though. We didn't tank in 2012, we tanked in 09. 2012 was our Annus Horribilis ( Neeld).

Its our first time with a draft pick hinging on another team's result so a very new experience for our supporters.
On its own that would cause a flood of barracking against Melbourne, but now with Lever there nobody needs an extra reason.

Sucks. 2 years ago I really liked Melbourne and Richmond and now I cant stand either!
