Decriminalisation of drugs... your thoughts?

People should be free to put whatever and whoever they want in their bodies.

The issue is that our society has a safety net expectation, so if during the course of living your freedom you get in trouble and need social support then everyone else is paying for your recreation which I don't think is appropriate.

You should be free to do what you want, but your right to that is paired with your responsibility to handle your business.

Sounds like your first sentence is a lie.

You know who can't afford their own personal hospital? Nearly everyone. So you saying people should be "free" to use drugs is a lie. Taylor insincere for the umpteenth time.

You have a right to do what you want, but you have the responsibly to not put your own hedonism ahead of everyone else.

Society doesn't have a responsibility to provide for your leisure. You don't have a right to be supported while you chase an escape.

There are plenty of people who are able to financially support a drug habit and not have it impact their life.

Now in an attempt to look like less of a prick you're conflating hospitals with buying the drugs.

It's also welfare.

You don't have a right to mooch off the nation as it provides you a living, drug money and health care if something goes wrong.

If you can afford to not derail your life by using drugs then you should be able to.

But we don't live in that society, there is no cutting anyone off in our system. You'd have to move well away from the cities to escape services coming for you.

Maybe you don't have a right to drugs. You have a right to take them if you want and can get them and can take them without causing problems.

You have the right to do what you want, you don't have the right for society to provide for you to do it.

There is a significant proportion of drug use that is self medication for a variety of conditions.

It's usually the worst drugs (ie the least actual fun, and often the most addictive) that end up being used by addicts to self medicate.

So actually in a very real way some of what you call hedonism is a very real result of society failing to provide almost exactly the same thing (medical treatment and some forms of welfare) in the first place that you are saying shouldn't be provided.

There is a significant gap in our medial coverage for involuntary addict treatment, but what can be done about that that is fair?

As a taxpayer, I'm happy to pay for it. Do you even pay tax?

Give junkies free heroin in return for counselling?

That might work.

Heroin is cheap to make and comes from Tassie,so the money spent on it would stay in our economy instead of eventually trickling offshore into the Bush crime family's accounts. Most junkies would rather have a life, and once they get one they'll be capable of leading them productive and effective lee.

If you wanted to actually count the beans then some sort of hecs fee thing could pay for it.

Obviously the details are more complex than that but there is a puritanical streak driving public policy. IMO it comes from the secret Christian fear that if god hears us laughing she (it or he or they ... whatever) will smite us down instead of the fundamental Christian idea that compassion for the less fortunate is what Jesus would show.

So it'll never happen.

So, people who get injured playing sports shouldn't get free medical treatment?
