Watched a few of the those “dark-web” stories on youtube and getting the feeling that there may be a bit of mayo on some of them, akin to the old fire-side ghost stories, or the "happened to a friend of a friend" urban myths. Wondering how many of their stories have been passed around like Chinese whispers each person adding a bit of their own twist and extra details.

has anyone had legit first hand experience with the dark web?

Yep.

Yep, downloaded it a few years ago with a mate and perused it for a while.

The scariest thing was that we were both nervous after reading stories, and then when we were actually connected, somebody knocked heavily on our front door. Bearing in mind, this was at 3am - it was pretty creepy.

If real I would have definitely shat my pants and hidden under the covers till morning

Haha it was real, we both sat there with knives for a little while.

Sounds pretty lame, but it was genuinely terrifying.

I ran out of gas, just wanted some help :(
Or I needed to use the phone for an emergency :(
Or I was driving around all night in serial killer withdrawal and saw the light on :(
Nothing to do with the Deep Web ;)

Browse carefully as I think there are plenty of illegal sites in the Deep Web that you don't want connected to your computer.
Yeah. I'm tempted to download TOR, but with my limited IT knowledge, it probably wouldn't end well

Psychology speaking, a lot.

Some of the shiz I have heard about is the very very worst of what humans are capable of.

Righto.

I suppose I have seen a lot of stuff in life, so very little on the web fazes me.

The deep web is like any other part of the web. You have to go looking for certain things in order to find them.

You =/= everyone.

You're a tough one if it doesn't effect you.

Youre right you have to go looking for it, but in reference to the conversation, the original poster said he was going to stay away from and your response was, why?

Well, it doesn't effect me to the point where I notice any alteration in my behavior. Let's break this down to what the big issues are about the deep web. Crime, violence and sex. I have seen the real life decapitations, totures, accident stuff, and I agree it isn't pleasant, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't view something similar again if it was informing me about something, the same goes for criminal stuff up to the point of actively engaging in committing a crime itself. As for sex, I have seen most things that consenting adults can get up to, and this doesn't faze me either. I have seen all of these things on the world wide web and/or in real life, no deep web required. I expect I wouldn't react to well to child pornography, but I have never gone looking for it, and I have never seen it, even by accident. I think it must be only accessible for those that actively seek it out.

I don't take it as read that there aren't very interesting and positive things available in the deep web.

The state doesn't like us there because it makes us very hard to monitor.

Yeah fair call.

Why?

What can something on a monitor possibly do to you?

All the stories about real life murders, rapes etc. and live streaming of people being tortured while people in the chat box demand orders at the executioners.

About how they can track your location and appear at your door.

I understand that some of those stories might be fictitious and just for entertainment purposes, but it's enough to put me off. I also see no reason or anything to gain by going on the deep web so it's best I just stay away.

Then again, having never been on there, I suppose I am pretty ignorant to what it's all about.

Extreeeeeeeemely doubtful.

Some cretins in a dungeon can strip back Tor and put the layers of the onion back together? Complete bullshit mate. If anyone can monitor you down there then it is almost certainly a government agent.

Learn how it all works, and is put together, and utilise Tor to browse and your location is safe, provided you don't download anything and you don't engage in illegal conduct. The FBI had to engage in social engineering, rather than computer technology, to bring down the Silk Road drug sales & distribution website, so I can't see a couple of circus freaks causing your personal security any issues.
