Melbourne has matched Adelaide’s trade period hi-jinks of last week, making a bold claim to secure the services of the son of former Adelaide star and captain, Mark Ricciuto.

Ricciuto ‘Joey’ Jnr, aged two, has been confirmed as a target of the Melbourne Football Club this week, according to Football Operations Manager Chris Connolly, who also argued against critics saying Ricciuto Jnr. was ‘too young’.

‘Look, obviously we’d have to get a couple of pre-seasons into him, just to get that level of match fitness we require. But the trend lately is to recruit younger and younger, and with this pick we’d be confident of fielding a strong team for the 2026 season.’

‘Joey’, 21kg and a thumping left bootie, has reportedly been playing well for the South Adelaide Mother Goose XXII, snaring a couple of best on ground performances and even leading the team as captain for the first time last week.

Melbourne’s bold recruiting strategy comes less than a week after Adelaide made headlines after declaring its intentions for Jack Viney, son of former Demon’s captain Todd. Connolly denied a ‘tit for tat’ trade week plan, saying the choice to go after Joey was ‘pure coincidence.’

‘At the end of the day, it’s all about footy, and part of footy is remaining viable in the future. Sure, there’s the Viney element thrown in, but realistically footy is a funny game and this is just one of those spooky coincidences.’

Although reluctant to talk about deal specifics, Connolly confirmed the package put together by Melbourne was an attractive one, and is believed to include a six-figure signing sum and a Wiggles video. Connolly was also coy about other possible deals.

‘Yes, we’re aware that Bicks [Mark Bickley] has a son, and there have been some preliminary discussions. We’re also conscious of the fact that Macca [Andrew McCleod] has a bit more time on his hands now, and its possible we may shoot him a quick text asking about his chances of conceiving us a new running half back flanker. But this is all pie in the sky stuff; we’re trying not to look too far beyond 2026.’

Is this what passes for humour these days? Not even remotely funny. Embarrassing, actually..
