Wonder if our (Brisbane based) membership fees will drop by 1/12th?
Unlikely to happen. Only posturing and blowing in the wind to get a better deal when the renegotiation takes place at end of year or early next year. It has been reported Melbourne are losing 100K per month. They make 250K from the Brisbane game. What other options have they got to make easy money.
My suggestion would be for our CEO to begin exploring other options such as the Kangaroos replacing Melbourne so that we can negotiate from a position of strength.

'Home' game trial set to end

By Karen Lyon
May 25, 2004

The Western Bulldogs and Melbourne are set to end the financially driven practice of playing a home game each season in Sydney and Brisbane, respectively.

This weekend the Demons will travel to Brisbane for a "home" game against the three-time premiers, while the Western Bulldogs host Sydney at the SCG.

But the Demons are almost certain to abandon their Gabba home-game experiment when the contract is completed at the end of next season. The Bulldogs are reviewing their contract to play in Sydney and may instead opt to play another home game in the neutral environment of Darwin, already the venue for a game against Port Adelaide later this year.

The decision by the Bulldogs and Melbourne to play home games in Sydney and Brisbane, respectively, was made to take advantage of the larger crowds their opponents would draw.

But, with both clubs coming off wins on the weekend and the Demons enjoying good form this season, the practice that allows their opponent a home-ground advantage has drawn criticism.

Melbourne president Paul Gardner said that while the venture had undoubtedly been a financial success for the club since it began in 2000, he questioned whether it would continue to benefit the Demons.

"If Melbourne keep playing well this year, next year you would have to say it would be questionable because we could probably pull that crowd back in Melbourne," he said.

Gardner said the former board had entered into the contract for the "right reasons" but there could be other options for the club.

"Now because Brisbane has become a power it might have been a smart move for us to have played on a neutral ground and get Melbourne versus Port (Adelaide) which we get stuck with on Mother's Day."

The Demons president said his club had failed to make the same impact in Brisbane as Hawthorn had achieved in Tasmania.

"They have actually made Launceston their own, a little. They have managed to sell memberships, generate a bit of buzz around the town. I think those two things we haven't achieved in Brisbane," he said.

While Melbourne was unlikely to consider playing home games in Launceston or Canberra, Gardner said the club would investigate other options.

Bulldogs chief executive Campbell Rose said last night the Sydney home-game proposal would be reviewed after this weekend's match and a decision would be made later in the season.

"It is one of the options before us to consolidate the two games in one state. That is something we would give consideration to, but the point being we haven't actually had the game in Darwin yet and until we have that it is too early to be pre-emptive in saying we want to have them both there," said Rose.

What the same as they did when they closed the social club and gave us back the portion of our membership fee that gave us access to that!!!!!

Not in this lifetime!

And I'm sure the Vic based membership will go up because of the extra game possibly in Melbourne. Although knowing the AFL, they'll probably allocate the game to Perth or Adelaide so we play in both states twice a year.

Doesn't really appear to be bothering the players...

You have the ear of our players to know this?

WA and SA teams play at home for 12 games and Sydney, @ 13, if Melbourne or any other Club for that matter, do not come here, Brisbane will be the only Club in the Competition that has to actually leave their State for all of their 11 away games.

Amazing comments.

So they agreed to play "home" games away in Brisbane based on the assumption that they would be crap and therefore wouldn't draw a decent crowd in Melbourne.

So the reasons were "right" for as long as they were crap but are now "wrong " because after 9 rounds this season they are going OK.

The Lions should demand they they commit NOW, one way or another instead of allowing them to sit on the fence. If they are so confident of being a "power" for the rest of this year and for the foreseeable future, let them take their "away" home game back home...........for good.....and don't come crying to us if they suddenly turn to crap again.

And golly....what a surprise it must have been to President Gardner that his club didn't make the same "impact" as Hawthorn has made in Tasmania.

Hello Mr Gardner!!!

In case it's escaped your attention, Brisbane has had its OWN AFL side in the comp for a while now, 20000 plus members for years (now 30000 plus), a triple-bunger Premiership, which, amazingly enough, hasn't seen much of it's loyal supporter base feel any compunction to defect to the Dees just because they consent to play their rightful home game on our turf once a year!

Bit different to Hawthorn playing a game or two in at a neutral venue that's only a few spits accross Bass Strait.

If anyone in the Lions administration falls for this load of claptrap, I'll turn my membership card in.

We play our games there coz the crowd will be bigger up there, mainly due to brisbane supporters, than down here in Melbourne

probably next year that wouldnt be the case but we will still do it coz im pretty sure u pay us or something

there are certain lil things like that that have to happen to keep the poorer teams in the competition

We do not pay you, Melbourne take the gate as it is a home game for Melbourne. A home game in Melboure against Brisbane does not attract as many as it does in Brisbane, hence beneficial to Melbourne to host the home game at the Gabba.

I am getting pretty tired of Daniher, and his 'poor club this' and 'Brisbane poaching players that', don't come here anymore, couldn't care less, and I am sure Richmond wouldn't mind the yearly windfall of hosting a home game at the Gabba to boost their flagging coffers.

keep the poorer teams in the competition

Melbourne breached the salary cap and paid the price, it was your Management Committee's job to build the Club back up and bring your members back into the fold.

How is it Brisbane's fault that Melbourne are now considered poor and by memory, Collingwood were on the brink of being broke, like him or hate him Eddie has now made Collingwood wealthy again.

My suggestion, change your Board and get fresh new thinkers and shakers to bring the Club into the 21st Century

Let's also not forget that over the course of the contract, that Melbourne have only been drawn to play the Lions once per season, instead of twice as would have probably been the case if the contract had not existed. The media bleat about the 'madness' of playing Brisbane at the Gabba at a time when Brisbane are three time premiers. However they tend to forget that it's only been once a season instead of twice and most probably two losses.

Exactly. I just shook my head when I read these comments. If this is the calibre of leadership at Melbourne, then it's not surprising that they're in financial trouble.
