Review Dees v Handbaggers: the Good, the Bad & the Fugly

I am actually glad we lost to be honest. I just don’t think this team has the ability to recognise that not playing 4 quarters of football is not going to help us win games. I feel if we’d pulled it off we would’ve rolled into the Brisbane game complacent.

I only hope now they realise it wasn’t about Gawn, it was about dozing off for 15 minutes and then playing catch up. If they don’t see through a full game against Brisbane then they haven’t learnt a thing.

We haven’t got an easy draw. North will be a harder game, they’ll know they can scrap a win against us and they’ll come out absolutely red hot. Essendon, Richmond, Hawthorn and St Kilda will be the next string of games (not sure of order) but if we don’t start to play a full game, we don’t be winning many of those.

Teams will look at us and say ‘these boys go to water at some point or another, when they do, let’s just punish them and not drop off like they will. Then all we do is just consolidate’.

If we don’t fix our application and start picking AFL standard players, our season will be done in 5 weeks.

As much s**t as Goodwin receives on this board he recognised in his presser that our defensive work in the first half was horrible.

It was a heartbreaker on Sunday so I expect we'll absolutely trounce Brisbane to make amends. But that's not enough, the rectification needs to last the whole season, because its games like we had on Sunday that cost us a spot in the 8 last year.

Agree.

Trouncing Brisbane (and gaining percentage in the process) needs to be followed by an annihilation of North Melbourne. And i want us to seriously punish North. The Geelong loss can be mitigated by smashing the next two opponents.

Cracking the 100pt win against Norf would be nice.

And I would barrack every goal home. Every. Last. One.

Mate i would be escorted from the ground, guilty of vial and blatant abuse towards those supporters.

All three of them. The pricks.

Jeez, I thought some of you guys were being harsh. You choked at the end, but the signs look amazing. No point saying stuff like "that's the difference their guns like Ablett and Selwood carry their team in clutch moments while Oliver and Petracca fail". Ablett is the GOAT and Selwood is considered a Geelong champion and constant top 10 midfielder in the competition. Oliver is a 20 year old kid and Trac while 22, has missed a pre-season with that ACL.

Oliver is going to be one of the premier midfielders (already nearly there), at worst he becomes a Lenny Hayes type of player IMO (club champion, as opposed to AFL champion) Honestly, the only players U24 I would take over him are Bonts (and I'm obviously biased) and Daniher (best young KPF IMO), Cripps a 50/50 call. Trac could be anything. Then you have Viney who's a jet and A grade bookends in Lever and Hogan with probably the best ruck in the competition. You guys will finish top 4 this season, might be 1-2 years before a premiership though.

Really enjoyed this game as a neutral, goodluck for the rest of the season.

unsure of why there are such huge melts here tbh.

We lost by under a kick to a potential premiership team.

Its funny hoe
w if Gawn kicks that goal alot of opinions in here would be flipped

Also it's Round 1, there's another 21 Rounds that'll shape our season

does anyone else feel the Demons poor quarters are a bit of a product product of Goodwins selections and by him throwing the team around too much?
i feel that constantly rotating different guys through the centre confuses the midfield match ups and defensive pressure through the middle of the ground at times. also no third tall defender made us very easy to score against in the first half on the weekend.
Chris Scott played that beautifully and out smarted us. Goodwin made the right move by then having Lewis floating around behind the ball and it stopped the bleeding but it came at the cost of an outnumber in our forward half and we couldn't capitalise on our better inside 50 count.
I cant help thinking if we just had a 3rd tall defender down there to begin with, we don't need a 7th defender and we can go with even numbers in our forward half and can turn entries into goals more easily.

Yah. Like the Saints game. Everyone threw a fit in the third quarter but reality it is it only happened because we played the majority of that period with three flankers on ball

This rubbish about ‘being too tall’ is just that. Rubbish. Good sides always roll in with 2-3 big defenders. Geelong use Henderson and Taylor. Adelaide use Talia and Hartigan. It was clear on the weekend that once OMac was taken from the contest by Hawkins, we had nothing to complicate Geelong’s forward line. Lever was used as a one on one player (error) and Hibberd and Jetta just aren’t big one on one bodies.

The answer is Frost. Why oh why Goodwin won’t pick him is beyond me. If you put him in that side then you’ve added a cat amongst the pigeons so to speak. Esava gets a defender who can match him physically, Hibberd focuses entirely on Menzel, and Lever plays the interceptor. He simply floats across half back cutting off what comes in.

I think we use the 7th defender concept. It’s why we got Lever. Too much faith is placed in OMac. He needs help. We also need our defenders outmarking opposition forwards. Stewart, Kolodjashnij and Taylor (prior to injury) just did it far too easily.

We need midfielders that can rotate through half forward and half back, but not get lost doing it. That’s why I rate Brayshaw and Tyson.

As far as our forward line goes, well I think Pedersen plays CHF. I like him more around the hal forward mark. Hogan id like deep for now. We also don’t crumb well at all. No one gets to the ball drop and looks to keep us in the offensive. Melksham and Harmes were garbage.

All these things are achievable, but we need our best 22 in there and Sunday wasn’t our best 22.

Geelong only had 4 players who played in 11 flag.
Selwood, Taylor, Hawkins, Ablett
The rest were youngsters and players traded in. If that's the premiership side literally anyone down to Brisbane can win it

They were missing Danger Mackie Henderson Lonergan Motlop Cockatoo from last year and lost Taylor early. Then Selwood was hurt as well. Couldn't be a better time to play them

Ablett played for the Sun's in 2011

They've played finals every year bar 2015. They aren't a weak side. In saying that, we conceded at a very important time of the game which cost us. I maintain that we can stay with Geelong. They were missing Dangerfield and Henderson, but we were missing Viney and McDonald. I also had a heated discussion with a Geelong fan about how Scott Selwood wasn't that big a loss for them. He tried to tell me they would have won by 8 goals with him playing.

S.Selwood is actually pretty important to them ... however you remove Maynard for Tyson, and we're ahead ...

I kind of get Wagner for structure and he certainly wasn't our worst on Sunday. Maynard is such a wtf selection I can't figure out. If he was there to tag Ablett he did a shithouse job.

I'm giving Wagner a lot of credit for his second half, firstly because of how bad his first half way, but he also played a big part in our comeback ... he came out even on the game for mine.

Maynard definitely wasn't there to tag I don't think, I think he was given the role because of how ineffectual and lost he was before hand, not that that evaluation changed much when he did go to GAJ.

Goodwins presser today worries me. sounds like he thinks he's fixed the back half. just put an extra behind the ball, seems to be his plan in correcting it. maybe if they selected a better balanced defence in the first place they wouldn't have to.

Frustrating that he thinks we performed 'really strongly' in the second half. The concern for me was that the damage was done by halftime, we needed to play catch up and drag in a 27 point deficit. We only played that way in the second half because we had to, there was no urgency in the second quarter to try and get a break on Geelong or finish half time on par score wise with them.

I can tell you that our back six is not settled. Any situation where we are not playing our two key defenders in McDonald and Frost is troublesome. Frost should be close to the first picked in that back 6. I'll be incredibly worried if the only reason Frost is picked is because they've got Hipwood and Walker. He needs to play every week unless he is injured or literally getting 5 kicked on him repetitively. Lever has to be that 7th defender or he might as well still be playing for Adelaide.

Goodwin needs to leave the PR to somebody more qualified. We were shithouse in the second half. You don't win flags (or make finals) bombing the ball to nobody in particular I50 for an hour.

Having watched the majority of games over the weekend we are top 8 quality of we perform. The club should acknowledge this externally and internally. No more journey or growing or development bullshit. We need to win games and if we lost we need to identify why, not just assume it will improve.
