Review Dees v the Carlton Cheats: the Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Seems a bit harsh re Clarry, even if Max did a huge amount for him personally, that wouldn't make it any easier if he has anxieties about being around the club or other people including administrators etc so soon after being forced out and to a different city when he was ostensibly desperate to stay. Not comparable at all to Howes who wanted out to somewhere he thought he had a better chance of a flag (which is fine) and playing as a forward (lol) and has had 11 years to establish himself as a star at the Pies and is 7 years older than Clarry.

Seems weird that we traded Howe out in the same preseason we drafted Oliver ie they never crossed over.

The Circus thing is weird admittedly but I doubt Max is taking it as personally as some on here.
I think Oliver handled the whole scenario like a petulant child. Obviously we don't know what was discussed in the meeting but it was reported that he was told that he wouldn't be getting the same midfield minutes and it apparently it was a short meeting with him leaving quite angry about that. He then went up to Sydney and basically potted the club. Perhaps if he acted like an adult he wouldn't have anxiety.

It's unfair to ask Kolt to tag a player he's almost 10kg lighter than. We should let Steele go head to head with players like Cripps and let Koltyn tag players that rely more on their aerobic capacity like we saw with Nas and Serong.

I wouldn't mind seeing him have the job on Touk this week.
I think that would be stupid, tagging a bloke whos like GCs 4th or 5th mid now just leaves us open to being smashed again. I think we just flood stoppages with half forwards again like the second half against Carlton

With Trac out and Rowell doubtful, Touk is likely their second best mid and also a very important link up player/ball mover.

To be fair, no Trac, Rowell or Humphrey this week, so would be #2 behind Anderson.

I haven't been a big fan of the tag, but I'd definitely be putting work into Anderson this week given their outs.

Stop tagging for the sake of tagging, it doesnt help us win games. Tholstrup is horrendous in at CBA's. Cant stop his guy and cant win the ball. Youre basically playing a man down with him in there.

Didn't realise they had so many outs, im not sure the tags been successful yet. Nas had 18 and kicked 3 round 1, serong was held but we were destroyed in the middle and they dropped the tag against Cripps aswell and we were better afterwards.

Yeah good taggers like Ling and Cornes could still get 20 themselves and kick a goal. Tholstrup has no impact on the game

To be fair - Tholstrup didn't really tag on the weekend. He went to Cripps for some stoppages in the first half, but he didn't have a run with role. I totally agree with you though that I hope we don't just pencil him in for a tag every week. Midfield isn't good enough to carry that.

I get the feeling the public story was a fair bit of bs.

He most likely was sick but for the reason that Gawn was too afraid to say on air lol
Oh I knew what he meant lol. And I've needed that on Mondays in me youth as well

Yeah I think it was more King saying I don't want you here and Oliver cracked it.
Pretty much what I was thinking. As I this is what was reported but I think most of us could read between the lines.

Two games attended so far this season and both make up the top 2 games I've enjoyed the most since the premiership. Nearly broke my hand in that first half. But man that 2nd half, especially that last quarter was bloody fun. Watching the Carlton supporters slowly unravel in the stands was just as much fun as the footy itself. The banter was incredible. Dees fans up and about is so nice to see. Bit of chirp. Love it.

Good

Sparrow. Finally plays a good game. Was good all game as well. Midfield might be his jam. Let Tholstrup tag and maybe give this bloke a good crack in the middle. More of this and you will be of the s*list

Koz. Plenty been said. But watching this guy live is incredible fun. He just does things only a handful in the comp can do. The midfield move is a great one and his tank now gives him the opportunity to explode as a midfielder. Can he cope with the week in week out tags. We're about to find out. Awesome game. Lowered his eyes, danced around, was huge moving the ball forward.

Gawn. The guy is just a workhorse. Not many big blokes get better as the game goes on, but he does. His 2nd half performances has to be up with the best ever. He just runs his opponents into the ground and puts himself into positions that win or save games. In the votes again!

Fritta. Horrible first half like most of the team. But this is what he can do. Minimal possessions and high impact. He's the spark in that F50 and he was a huge part of that comeback.

Lever/Howes. Both were fantastic. Lever in particular was exceptional all game. Especially in that 2nd and last quarters. Howes has quietly been more than ok so far.

Steele. Thanks Saints you muppets. 32 pressure acts! 32!! 16 tackles! His defensive work is incredible. Compared to Clayton over the weekend who found the footy but had only 13 pressure acts. Steele is the leader Langford, Lindsay, Tholstrup and Windsor need.

Chandler. Special mention to this bloke. Rarely plays a shocker. always tackling and pressuring and was great to see him get on the end of a couple of important goals. He's probably he new Nibbler. Workhorse

Bad

Carlton. WTF!? 43 pts up. We looked limp. They were still 20pts up in the last nearly halfway through. But even at the game you just sensed we would overrun them. Voss looks like a dead man walking.

CJ. Probably a coincidence we looked better after he got injured. But wow he is a terrible kick and decision maker. Not sure he's best 23.

Ugly

Carlton fans. Oh boy it was sweet watching them leave en masse. But was a reminder of how bad they are as a supporter group. All lip that first half and couldn't take the lip back in the 2nd half when it became obvious they were going to be overrun. I have a thing against Essendon and Hawks fans as well, but Carlton are up there with the worst at games.

Needs a role change/different coaching instruction/strategic use or he isn't Bowey getting fit or AMW/X Taylor winning a place, esp with Howes playing so well. His strengths are useless to us if he keeps ****ing things up when he gets the ball

CJ is putrid. I don't know what he actually brings to the team. His negatives vastly outweigh his positives on the evidence I've seen so far.
First game he wasn't bad but yes, he is just too sloppy to be a best 23 backman. Frost was sloppy but he could at least shut down his man, CJ gets lost so often when the ball is coming in.

It was effectively CJ vs. Spargo.

I'd still take CJ given that choice.

He's only 185cm but can play taller so brings flexibility, he's very quick to close out on players on the lead, and he is a pretty decent true defender.

He does bring something a bit different to the rest of the backs.

Having said all of that, his disposal (both kicking and handpassing) are sub AFL standard and I reckon the opposition are quite happy when he has his hands on the ball.

He will have to find a way to minimise the downside of his disposals if he wants to lock up a spot in the team.

His disposal efficiency was surprisingly 91%. But his turnovers just kill you and he's pretty loose as a defender. Which is ok if he's hurting the other way, but he doesn't. Not sure where he sits tbh. Feel we have be better to come in like AMW or Bowey/Riv. CJ might be best on a wing maybe? Not sure. I do like his speed.

CJ’s disposal efficiency probably looks OK because he tends to bail out long down the line. So long as that’s not directly intercepted that will be “effective”.

Melbourne’s backs had lots of the ball just chipping sideways and switching in the first quarter which would’ve contributed to high efficiency also.

Hawthorn played him on the wing in 2025 and he was pretty lost (supposedly according to talk just after he was traded, I wasn’t paying attention personally to how Hawthorn used him). Apparently Jiath wanted to play back again.

I think everyone knows Jiath will have to improve (unlikely at his age) or be right at the top of his form to keep his spot.

Xavier Taylor doesn’t play that much differently to Jiath in style now. If he continues strong form in the VFL it would put pressure on Jiath for sure. Jiath’s injury maybe Taylor given a game soon too.

Disposal efficiency absolutely sucks as a stat.

Yeah he was at 91% for that stat, but he was also ranked pretty low for the "ball use" stat which takes into account the context around a disposal. CJ was a 1.0 for that which ranked him as 28th best (taking into account his very low disposal number due to injury).

For comparison, Kozzy had a horrible 42.4% disposal efficiency, but his "ball use" stat was 11.0, 3rd best on ground.

Yeah i was shocked at the stat when I got home from the game.
