Review Dees v the Carlton Cheats: the Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Worth mentioning how surprisingly accurate Langdon has been from set shot so far this season
Langdon was the “odd man out” taking kicks for goal along with the expected forwards as a pre-season training session I attended. So he has definitely worked on his goal kicking a bit.

He may have also just got lucky. A small sample size. But Langdon bombing a set shot from outside 50 wasn’t something was expecting this year, nor those two tricky kicks from the wrong side pockets.

This is why you can use them as a reference but I wouldn't be taking them as all knowing

Lewis is pushing the narrative of Carlton's bad work moving the ball

2:30 in this video
The kick he criticized is a good kick to 17 on the lead who tries to take it on his chest instead of getting his hands out. If an he protects that ball it's all his but Lewis needs it to fit his bad ball movement category

Something Jimmy Bartel highlighted on fc was how melbourne were winning clearances on the outside while Carlton were getting sucked into the contest. It's good to be on the other side of that discussion. Also shows that it's not personnel but systems. Having Trac, Oliver and Viney is great until thr ball gets 5 metres in space, that's when opponents run away with it.

Scythe Hird in this one talking about the adjustment the Dees made with Gawn hitting it to the outside of stoppage ;)

Our goalkicking in general has been a lot better so far this year. A lot of shots we would have missed under Goodwin we have been nailing. Makes me wonder if it's just the mindset of playing attacking football vs negative contest defence or if our players are less fatigued when taking their set shots.

Well there you go, didn't need Heath to make that change ;)

Nup, I was wrong on needing Heath for things to change. But as I said on game day, I've never before seen us be able to change tactics like that, I'm adjusting to the King era.

BUT - The point still stands that we needed to change what we were doing in the ruck and be more unpredictable. Having a ruck as a head coach is paying off already.

I still can’t believe we won that, I was totally tuned out before halftime, had a movie booked later that day but kept an eye on the scores, absolutely glorious.

Reckon it's both, less pressure to kick a set shot when you're having 30 shots on goal vs 7 as a team for the game.

And less fatigue, forwards are keeping a bit more length in the field which means less pointless running

I was thinking along similar lines, wondering if having to work so hard to get a decent shot on goal puts all kinds of pressure on the kicker to make it count vs knowing another shot on goal is just around the corner means less pressure and better accuracy

Funnily enough too we're actually taking (very slightly) harder shots - both set shots and general play. It's only a small difference, but one of the arguments going around last year was we were just getting difficult shots. Seems it wasn't that at all.

Overall we went at -3.9 last year, but we're at +4.0 this year. We were actually pretty decent the few years before 2025, at least over the course of the whole season.

One of our issues last year was Petracca, Johnson & Gawn were all in our top 12 for shots per game, but all with goal accuracy under 32%. Gawn is still poor this year, but there's a greater weight of numbers for shots per game to the actual good forwards - Fritsch, Checkers, Kozzy, JVR and Chandler are the top 5 and all have very good accuracy (outside of Koz who takes a few wild ones). Johnson and Trac were in our top 5 for shots last year.

Just on AJ, that number seems to be a bit skewed with him playing only 5 games for the year.

Yeah, 5 games is usually the minimum I'd bother looking at for averages. He still had 10 shots at goal, which is enough to know he sucks a bit.

Amazing to think if you get players who are good at kicking and get the ball to them, they are more likely to kick goals than players who are not good at kicking!

Didn't notice Tony Shaw pissing himself in the background of Blues Radio until they showed it on The Front Bar last night. So good.

If you see the highlights of the Triple M call you can see the Ox in the box over fist pumping a heap of goals as well lol

Haha looking at that, Ox knocks on the 3AW window and points them out after the Cross goal.
